Digital IDs are a good idea: unifying government information in a single place, rather than ahead across many; giving a universal and easy form of ID that can be used for voting etc. Many people are already required to prove their identity on a regular basis (ie non-white people). I saw Rory Stewart speak about practical immigration policy and the state of immigration policy. He really had some excellent points and he made it clear that there are practical laws and treaties that could be implemented. These riots were as predictable as the sun rising. Years of austerity while the rich get richer. Publics servants such as teachers and police cannot buy a house. The average wait for a GP is 6 weeks the last time I looked it up. People are dying waiting for ambulances. More and more people are depending on NGO's and soup kitchens. Poorer areas are more likely to be ethnically and racially mixed. Working class people are more likely to have a diverse mix of community and friends. They are more likely to have racially mixed marriages. Martin Luther King said that "a riot is the voice of the unheard". There is nothing wrong with wanting practical and serious immigration policy. It is not racist. Europe used to have it. Neoliberalist politicians have ignored the warnings of Brexit , Trump, the adulation of Putin and Orban, and the rise of the right across the West. I believe the people were trying over and again with the ballot box, and were being ignored and lied to. And now they have turned to protests. Their protests have been hijacked by violent, mercenary scumbags who know exactly how to make people more angry. Banning social media won't fix this. Trump was banned from Twitter and we all felt relief, but he is stronger than ever. The message will get through to the people who believe it, even if it makes middle class people feel better for not hearing it. Policy and governance over the last 20 years has been so bad, that we already know that these scumbags cannot serve much time in prison because the prisons are full! They didn't invest in policing to save money on public pensions. These police are probably on overtime and exhausted, and I don't believe it is close to being over. I really hope I am wrong because it is a very frightening situation. It is time to start investing in working class areas, taxing the wealthy, redistribute taxes into public services, and at the other end, invest in policing and prisons so these thugs causing serious harm can be locked away for a long time.

Is it worth enduring such negative treatment? Perhaps it's better to 'give your absence to those who don't appreciate your presence.' Digital IDs are a good idea: unifying government information in a single place, rather than ahead across many; giving a universal and easy form of ID that can be used for voting etc.
Many people are already required to prove their identity on a regular basis (ie non-white people). It's the people who don't have this problem who are so anti ID cards.
I saw Rory Stewart speak about practical immigration policy and the state of immigration policy. He really had some excellent points and he made it clear that there are practical laws and treaties that could be implemented. These riots were as predictable as the sun rising. Years of austerity while the rich get richer. Publics servants such as teachers and police cannot buy a house. The average wait for a GP is 6 weeks the last time I looked it up. People are dying waiting for ambulances. More and more people are depending on NGO's and soup kitchens.
Poorer areas are more likely to be ethnically and racially mixed. Working class people are more likely to have a diverse mix of community and friends. They are more likely to have racially mixed marriages. Martin Luther King said that "a riot is the voice of the unheard". There is nothing wrong with wanting practical and serious immigration policy. It is not racist. Europe used to have it. Neoliberalist politicians have ignored the warnings of Brexit , Trump, the adulation of Putin and Orban, and the rise of the right across the West. I believe the people were trying over and again with the ballot box, and were being ignored and lied to. And now they have turned to protests. Their protests have been hijacked by violent, mercenary scumbags who know exactly how to make people more angry.
Banning social media won't fix this. Trump was banned from Twitter and we all felt relief, but he is stronger than ever. The message will get through to the people who believe it, even if it makes middle class people feel better for not hearing it.
Policy and governance over the last 20 years has been so bad, that we already know that these scumbags cannot serve much time in prison because the prisons are full! They didn't invest in policing to save money on public pensions. These police are probably on overtime and exhausted, and I don't believe it is close to being over. I really hope I am wrong because it is a very frightening situation. It is time to start investing in working class areas, taxing the wealthy, redistribute taxes into public services, and at the other end, invest in policing and prisons so these thugs causing serious harm can be locked away for a long time.
