CHAPTER 4 : The Yoga Of Knowledge In Renunciation Of Actions.
"Lord Shri Krishna said: This imperishable philosophy I taught to Viwaswana, the founder of the Sun dynasty, Viwaswana gave it to Manu the lawgiver, and Manu to King Ikshwaku! The Divine Kings knew it, for it was their tradition. Then, after a long time, at last it was forgotten.It is the same ancient Path that I have now revealed to thee, since thou are My devotee and My friend. It is the supreme Secret.
Arjuna asked: My Lord! Viwaswana was born before Thee; how then canst Thou have revealed it to him?
Lord Shri Krishna replied: I have been born again and again, from time to time; thou too, O Arjuna! My births are known to Me, but thou knowest not thine.I have no beginning. Though I am imperishable, as well as Lord of all that exists, yet by My own will and power do I manifest Myself.Whenever spirituality decays and materialism is rampant, then, O Arjuna, I reincarnate Myself ! To protect the righteous, to destroy the wicked and to establish the kingdom of God, I am reborn from age to age.He who realises the divine truth concerning My birth and life is not born again; and when he leaves his body, he becomes one with Me.
Many have merged their existences in Mine, being freed from desire, fear and anger, filled always with Me and purified by the illuminating flame of self-abnegation.

अध्याय ४ - ज्ञान कर्म सन्यास योग
(कर्म-अकर्म और विकर्म का निरुपण)
श्री भगवानुवाच
इमं विवस्वते योगं प्रोक्तवानहमव्ययम्‌ ।
विवस्वान्मनवे प्राह मनुरिक्ष्वाकवेऽब्रवीत्‌ ॥ (१)
भावार्थ : श्री भगवान ने कहा - मैंने इस अविनाशी योग-विधा का उपदेश सृष्टि के आरम्भ में विवस्वान (सूर्य देव) को दिया था, विवस्वान ने यह उपदेश अपने पुत्र मनुष्यों के जन्म-दाता मनु को दिया और मनु ने यह उपदेश अपने पुत्र राजा इक्ष्वाकु को दिया। (१)
एवं परम्पराप्राप्तमिमं राजर्षयो विदुः ।
स कालेनेह महता योगो नष्टः परन्तप ॥ (२)
भावार्थ : हे परन्तप अर्जुन! इस प्रकार गुरु-शिष्य परम्परा से प्राप्त इस विज्ञान सहित ज्ञान को राज-ऋषियों ने बिधि-पूर्वक समझा, किन्तु समय के प्रभाव से वह परम-श्रेष्ठ विज्ञान सहित ज्ञान इस संसार से प्राय: छिन्न-भिन्न होकर नष्ट हो गया। (२)
स एवायं मया तेऽद्य योगः प्रोक्तः पुरातनः ।
भक्तोऽसि मे सखा चेति रहस्यं ह्येतदुत्तमम्‌ ॥ (३)
भावार्थ : आज मेरे द्वारा वही यह प्राचीन योग (आत्मा का परमात्मा से मिलन का विज्ञान) तुझसे कहा जा रहा है क्योंकि तू मेरा भक्त और प्रिय मित्र भी है, अत: तू ही इस उत्तम रहस्य को समझ सकता है। (३)
