I've heard this don by The Corries under the title "The Bricklayer's Song" I love it no matter who does it. You have to see it done live though. It is great!
this is one of those songs where, depending on who you listen to, some of the words are different. Ex. Foreman or Gaffer, Dear Boss or Dear Sir, Cut the rope or Untied the rope.
i love the song thoroughly ... but i must ask how come he holds the guitar for the whole song without playing a single chord? it reminds of the way old people walk alongside their bicycles rather than cycle them on the road
Or maybe he is like me. I used to hold my guitar when I sang a capella at the start of my little celtic band because it was like a security blanket and I didn't have to worry about doing something awkward (accidental or otherwise!) onstage if I had it in front of me. Then again, the first time I did put it down to sing, one of my bandmates moved it as a joke which startled me when I went to get it! (I didn't know guitars could sprout wings, did we bring the net for them?) I knew Liam Clancy and I wouldn't put it past him to do that to a very young Robbie O'Connell!
@dehro I don't think there are even chords written for it... All versions are like this!! Thats why it's so special if people can sing it properly like!!!
Man, my dad used to play this song and other Irish songs for me when I was a baby to calm me down.
God, I've loved this song for years!
I really love this song! Thanks for posting it!

Magic stuff! Thanks Larry.
Love the Irish sense of humour - good stuff!
This was taken from a routine that British comedian Gerald Hoffnung did in the early 1950s.
Took some liberties with the lyrics, but all in all a lovely rendition of a fantastic song! Kudos!
Pat Cooksey is a legend!

This is really the best version of this song because of his timing.
Gerald Hoffnung did a spoken version of this song before the Oxford Union in 1953!
@lonepalm58 I think you mean Tom. Pat and Paddy were both nicknames for the same person, Patrick Clancy, the eldest brother.

Who's sitting behind him? I see Tom, Is the other one Pat?
Bobby Clancy seated to Robbie's far right, Paddy Clancy next to Bobby (and behind Robbie), and Tom Clancy to Robbie's far left. Slainte!
Well, nothing like enjoying a light-hearted song is there?
could someone kindly post the lyrics. Maybe I could use them the next time I call in sick LOL

💚
Although this version brilliant,Noel Murphy's version has a few extra lyrics in it,and I prefer Noel's version.
Sean really does good job of this some not sure much could beat it
Not a patch on the Dubliners version really.
True, Sean Cannon is the best when it comes to the timing and just generally his performance!
heu...because he decided to sing it a cappella, but still needed the guitar for the next song, maybe?
