I use the original and it works amazing. Just give it a good rinse down. I also use shine, only need a light coat then wipe excess with a rag. Engine looks like new. Very happy and very easy to use.

I would recommend because a lot people that has this product, and it’s very useful. And also of course it’s gonna smell I mean what do u expect?!
Just clean it and leave it for 10-15 minutes, and then washed off and the. Use the degreaser to shine it up. Also when u sprayed, ur supposed to cover the alternator because if u do, ur car won’t turn on for the next few minutes because it’s wet. Once it’s dried up then u can start. So cover the alternator.

Wow thanks, small oil leak has been building up scum on my block and accessories for years. Was In autozone and saw gunk, thought it might work for me. Cashier tells me there's a special, 1 for $5 but 2 for $7, ropes me into the second can. Didn't read the label fully until I get home, then freak out at all the warnings like you said. No asphalt, can't touch hot engine, can't touch electronics, and capture and dispose of runoff as Hazmat?!?! *gulp* immediately bring up youtube and search "gunk degreaser" and you confirmed all my fears. Glad I found this, hopefully they'll take it back (dropped one and cracked the cap). Worst part is I already knew super clean works real well, sticking with that.

I have used many products and the degreaser you are talking about is mainly for heavy caked on oil and dirt. The smell is strong but the product is strong as well and is good if you want to do very little scrubbing. I usually use it and use a second round of full strength simple green. I would never use the shine stuff as all that stuff just collects dust and dirt. Petroleum based products are going to damage a soft pavement because pavement is mostly petroleum itself.

I use it.. It does slightly dis color asphalt, but it shouldn't soften it or degrade the integrity of it, unless someone soaked asphalt in it for hours and who would do that... The ease of use is why people love it, and the smell goes away in a day or so. By the way, it is asphalt not ashphalt..✌😄

Back in the '70's, I used to buy concentrated Gunk in quart cans. It had to be diluted with kerosene before use. Then it was applied with a stiff brush and rinsed off with water. It worked well as a degreaser, but it made the engine smell like kerosene and the runoff had that "rainbow" sheen. The aerosol version seems to be the same formula with the same issues.

I use to buy Gunk Super Concentrate in gallon can & mix, put in parts washer. That was when kerosene was $.99 cents gallon. Last purchase K1 was $4.00 +

I use kerosene to clean my engine and have never had an issue, dielectric grease on all electrical connections, 303 Aerospace Protectant on all rubber and plastic. My engines are all high mileage and look new.
BTW, if you want to keep your aluminum block etc. from corroding spray it with a light coat of clear lacquer.

it's old video but i need to chime in on this
there's 2 kind of degreaser, petroleum solvent base or alkaline detergent base.
both cut through grease but alkaline base had tendency to dry up certain plastics or rubber and etch aluminum or certain metal, you can see some powdery/whitish stain on aluminum after washing them with heavy alkaline degreaser, and because they'll completely wash off leave nothing behind, they're a bit more risky in de-lube and drying up the moving parts too much, that's why it's necessary to apply dressing after that.
petroleum solvent base cleaner on the other hand is safer for aluminum and most material under the hood because these are the parts being formulated to deal with gasoline(which is even stronger solvent than kerosin and diesel) after all, and the oiliness that's left behind probably act as some lubrication for joints and moving parts, they are better for the electricals as well, but follow up dressing still recommended for a complete protection.
i operates used cars dealership before, we used diesel and kerosin to wash engine bay all the time l because it's cheap and it does marvelous job removing grease and not giving trouble.
if you worry about petroleum solvent wreck your paint, look no further than the paint around your fuel filler cap, people splash gasoline on these areas all the time, but you'll hardly see any stain from it, maybe a bit yellowish stain for really really neglected paint but overall, petroleum solvent are safer for our car.

Haven't used this stuff for 25 years - when I did it was to remove oil from valve cover leaks and other oils on the engine block and heads - again that was 25 years ago and the car was 20 or so years old then so there were far fewer "delicate" parts under the hood. back then I don't recall there being a "part 2" product. I do remember having to come along with dish soap to remove this product's residue and knock down the smell. I think the main component is likely kerosene. I guess I'd say if you know you need to use something like this product then you should but if you don't know start with a mild all purpose cleaner or better yet some car soap and hand wash what you can - there's nothing wrong with a little elbow grease, a few micro fiber towels and a bucket of water.

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 6 років тому +2

You ever actually try to CLEAN A GREASY ENGINE "BY HAND"??? "A few micro fiber towels and a bucket of soapy water"......ON A GREASY, CRUDDY ENGINE........GOOD LUCK WITH THAT. I'm not "promoting GUNK engine cleaner".....but I can tell you've never cleaned a truly greasy, cruddy engine before......not in the way you just recommended. You try that.........you'll give up within 20 minutes & find a better alternative......IF you're smart. Because that would be like trying to dig a 10 foot hole with a teaspoon. You've GOT to use some kind of degreaser & brushes. Cleaning a greasy cruddy motor is a far cry from "washing a car".......I can assure you of that.

I don't usually add comments, especially when a PRO is in question.
1- I have been working with SHINE since Gunk first introduced the product.
2- I have been cleaning my engines since early seventies. Makes working on mechanics cleaner...
...and I like to clean my car, tires, body and engine before taking it to my mechanic.
3- I would give advice, never to PROs, maybe ask a few questions and say...
    LOOK FOR PROBLEMS.
    MAYBE, SLOW DOWN.
    first
On the engine he was testing Shine; It was not that bad. Not a 20 years of neglect.
He started with Gunk's hardcore clear spray. Okay, BUT...
For his engine, and most engines...
    Use Gunk's proper product...
FOAMY, after clear gunk you always finish with FOAMY...omg really, if in the shop, hand cleaner...
But before you touch any object... don't you wash your hands?
Yes , hit LAVA and a good finger nail brush ......then your hand cream!
    SHINE IS HAND CREAM.
    ...TOWEL DRY
...get air compressor going to dry any parts, hard to reach, alternator etc...
    Or run engine awhile.
    SHINE is then applied.
I don't like tires glossy, nor my engines.
So I apply heavy, wait awhile, towel dry and buff alittle.
This product, if used properly, is amazing, to open your hood months later and lightly brush or blow away any dust
    So, to you pro's ...
    slow down
    And, Start with FOAMY

  • @jodopeg
    @jodopeg 5 років тому +1

I haven't used Original Gunk since the 70s...
The Foamy Gunk works just as well and rinces off easily...
And I will always rinse with the hose but then use my leaf blower to completely dry the engine BEFORE starting it. So wster in the spark plug wells and inside the wire protectors and indentions on the engine doesn't cause the plug wires to short out. Can really screw up the engine.

One point I want to add here: I see he washes the engine AND especially alternator with high pressure washer. This IS WRONG. Last time I did that my alternator needed to be rebuilt because of the noise it made. Also while the engine might be rated for water high pressure washing engine components might result in water getting between places it shouldn't. Please don't pressure wash you engine just rinse it if necessary. Thanks

It's good for a one time clean. I use one round degreese one round shine the day I buy an old vehicle when I spend a few days working on it and cleaning interior and stuff that shine will dry more and more and I won't run the engine a single time. A week or so later I go back and hit the engine with some heavy duty degreeser and rinse that off then hit it with silicone after it's dry. That will last for about a month and it's safe on wires against water and corrosion

The strong interior odor is because people don't tape up the cabin air intake and it gets in the filter or the vents. When you use this just coat the ground below the engine where your working, if it doesn't mix with water then you've created a barrier. Used it on all my cars and works great just don't be stupid and do stupid things, think about what you're doing to prevent the idiotic things he's complaining about.

it's not a engine detailing product, it's an engine greaser, it's meant to remove, disolve and make it easier to remove OIL from an engine, not the ancillaries, the engine, say if you have an oil leak. Also there are different types of "petroleum" products, for example "petroleum jelly" which you can use on for example battery terminals, asphalt has a different make up to ENGINE PLASTIC parts and may react "MAY" react differently. YES use a product specifically for detailing and use GUNK for what it was intended for. I've used gunk on all my cars and NEVER had a problem, never used it on any plastic, mainly metal parts, never had any problems.

Not a fan of Gunk, But can I correct you about what you said about the shine? Even tho the shine attracts dirt, the shine does make it easier to clean because it leaves a film of oil that the dirt can stick too instead of sticking to bare rubber, plastic and metal pieces. Kinda like wax and tire shine.

    • @dallaspaintcorrectionautod8343
      @dallaspaintcorrectionautod8343  7 років тому +3

that may be true but again its not a product that is easy to rinse with water...it will also let dirt stick to the surface much easier as you mentioned and that would indirectly make you want to clean the engine bay again from unsightly dirt and dust..so is cleaning the engine bay more often easier?...to say it attracts dirt as if it is a magnet isn't really true, it just means dirt can stick to it easier..i can think of 10 other products that would give the same protection and look and dirt will not stick to it, so why even use this product in the first place?...but i do understand what your saying but it comes with a cost and you have to figure out if that cost and extra work in the future makes sense in your world..i can't afford to have my customers calling a week later telling me their engine bay looks dusty and dirty again...thanks for your comment and support....do you use the product?

Literally everything under the hood of a vehicle I waterproof. Every electrical connector has a rubber seal and the design of the fuse box makes it impossible to get water in it unless you spray at an upward angle or submerge it. Unless you're just sitting there focusing the spray on connectors or seals then you're not going to hurt anything. I won't even get into the engine in my 4runner that gets completely submerged on a regular basis and has zero issues.

The smell comes from the kerosene and it’s not really bad. We used to have a kerosene burner and I kinda like the smell 😅. Kerosene will not damage rubber, will not corrode aluminium and will cut through gunk like butter. So what’s the big deal? After all it’s far less harmful than those weird chemicals. The only downside is that it will melt the tar in your asphalt as good as the gunk in your engine 😂 so don’t use it on asphalt driveways.

That degreaser does smell so bad . I’m a automotive mechanic and we used it to clean the engine after a big job or to find a oil leak. The whole shop would stink and the floor was like a skating rink .

Thanks for the heads up! Anyway how about Meguiar's Engine Clean & Engine Dressing? Have ever use it before? Is it petroleum distillate? Thank you

Got a question, I used this and rinsed it off pretty well and went to start my engine to evaporate it like the directions said, and it started smoking. Never a good sign so I shut off the car. Is it supposed to do that when evaporating? I’m going to let my car sit overnight and let it evaporate that way other than speed it up but that was concerning.

How do I remove a shine product that is now partially peeling and looking terrible? The areas where I have been able to power wash and clean it off look nice and fresh but there are other areas where it won’t budge, looks like crap with pale opaque edges that look like crap.

I thought the product is for spraying on the engine block?! Rather than plastic parts etc..

Hey Dallas I disagree with you your wrong gunk is one of the best but you must read the instructions it said do not spray on the fire wall. spray it on your engine it's the best

I'm going to stick with tire foam, I know it will be safer for the belts and hoses. $4 for a car, and it smells better too. I leave the degreasing duty to the Totally Awesome.

tire foam has silicone which isn't good for the belts.

i use part 1 never part 2, also if you use soapy water after the degreaser it comes off very easy.

I'm about to go wash the car. Had a couple of these cans laying around. Thank God I came to watch this review before going . My car is fairly brand new so the engine bay at most just needs a hose down . Thanks for the heads up .

Not very objective, when testing if it rices off.... it did so nothing was mentioned. Can only think what would have been said if it did not rince off well. I really don't mean to bash but please less use of the word "Folks" and not as much repetition, everything was said 6 times. I mean this with respect and as constructives as possible. BTW, if this product is junk, do you have any recomendations?

You give a lot of good information. If my daughter wanted to do it for a living can she make a 6 figure income to help support her family? Does most of your business come from word of month or you tube videos? I know she will have to have the clientele. How long did it take you to build up your clientele? I was going to help her when I retire. Another great video.

What about plain, old dish washing liquid, through a foam cannon and letting it sit for a while and pressure washing it off?
Also, wouldn't the run off be legal to go into the storm drains too?
What with all the environmental laws and fines (especially in the PNW), I've been putting off personally washing my beautiful 2007 AUDI in my driveway.
All constructive criticisms and suggestions welcomed. 🙏

for somebody as professional acting and such a critic as yourself... you should have known you just could have ruined your whole engine by rinsing it with water. You should never, ever use water on an engine bay it could short out your alternator, cause massive water corrosion on all your wires, plugs, and terminals. Terrible idea!!

    • @drivedb7
      @drivedb7 5 років тому +1

On old cars maybe, but newer cars aren’t really bothered by a rinse down.
