And that charging handle…if I were an infantryman along the front hunting drones and lost the charging handle 12’ over yonder in a thicket of Kiev Chicken Ivy I’d be cursing Zelenskyy to upgrade to homemade PVC potato cannons. LoL. As a UA gunsmith, I can tell you WHY thoise Turkish abominations are so popular. Our warriors were using boom sticks against the drones since late 2022. We have tried every possible semi-auto shotgun. And the experience conclusion was as follows - Mag fed, short enough to be used from a car/trench, legal for civilians, cheap, serviceable and lots of spare parts.
Boys chose BTS-12 because you can make five shots in two seconds. And it is cheap. However, this device breaks if you run it fast. its hull is VERY thin. As for reliability, our local workshops produce special anti-drone ammo designed to work with BTS-12 and KSG. Needless to say that with all those semi-auto shotguns, you have to use a special ammo or you will die.

The overall idea of compact, light, semi auto, with a longer barrel gun that can be carried as a secondary is a solid idea. Turkish guns might suck balls, but I don't think they're a lost cause if a weapons depot was able to take some thought into how to successfully modify them and select proper ammo for the task.

@@Frumious_Jabberwocky Most of the drones used are commercial drones. They don't have the maneuverability to be able to dodge or laterally move very quickly at all. The FPV drones are small, fixed wing aircraft. They can only move forward and have no lateral movement at all. They change their angle of attack to move like an airplane or bird. FPV drones field of view is also only forward, so the operators aren't doing crazy maneuvers as they can only see what's in front of them and they risk losing connection with the drone doing such maneuvers. There's also jamming going on so you need to ensure your drone is pointing at the target in-case you get jammed and lose connection so that the drone becomes a dumb-bomb at that point and still hits its target.
As to the birds charging you thing, hope you never experience what a magpie is.
These shotguns aren't being deployed to take out the larger drones, they're mostly to take out the small hand-launched drones and grenade dropping versions that need to get relatively close due to small/short relative optical range. You aren't shooting down a larger Shahed or anti-vehicle FPV drone with a shotgun before it kills you.

Just a historical note: Although the Germans did threaten to execute Americans who were in possession of shotguns or shotgun ammo as the Germans argued these weapons to be a violation of The Hague Convention, thus making their users war criminals that were not entitled to the normal protections afforded to POW's, there was never any report of the threat being followed through with. American soldiers captured with shotguns in the 4 months between its introduction and the end of the war reported being treated the same as other POWs.
Interestingly enough, the diplomatic protest was not the result of any reports of the effectiveness of the weapon, but rather fears of its ineffectiveness. After the Germans captured a couple of Americans carrying shotguns and reported the "outdated weapon" to the German high command, the German government argued that shotgun buckshot would maim, but not kill quickly, at further ranges, thus causing unnecessary suffering which they viewed as a violation of The Hague Convention. We of course pointed out the various weapons that the Germans used which maimed, but did not kill quickly (Chlorine gas, sawtooth bayonets, flamethrowers, etc...), and insisted that we would continue using the shotgun as the pellets were essentially similar to a .32 caliber pistol which was not considered a violation of The Hague convention. Overall it was a moot point as the war ended so soon after.

    • @Talishar
      @Talishar 7 місяців тому +8

It's not a factor of maiming. Maiming implies surviving but disfigurement or loss of limb. It was due to lethality. The inability to repair and save a person sent back for medical treatment. It wasn't about how quickly someone died. You take a 7mm or 8mm round to the gut and that's a death that could take hours to die without medical attention. It was the fact that the damage was so extensive, that they were effectively unsavable. Getting shot outside of its effective range results in a .38 spl hit. Getting in within its effective range results in a much tighter, multiple hits of .38 spl turning that area to mince-meat. If you somehow survived the initial hit because it wasn't well placed, you were pretty much guaranteed to be dead because it was pretty much unfixable. Shotguns within their effective range were seen as essentially 100% lethal. Similar to the sawtooth bayonets. Even if you survived the initial stabbing, the damage done to the flesh made it almost impossible to operate and you were a guaranteed death. If the measuring stick was merely suffering, explosives would have been outlawed centuries ago. Being just outside of the effective range blast radius can leave you with multiple ruptured organs that could take days to die and is essentially unfixable. We essentially invented a whole classification of weapons designed to harness the fact that water mostly displaces instead of compresses and most of our bodies are water.

    • @-Zevin-
      @-Zevin- 7 місяців тому +23

The sawtooth bayonet is the most ironic "weapon" mentioned, because it was also used as a example of brutality, but ironically, the intent of the saw teeth wasn't as a weapon at all, it was a circumstantial side effect of it being first a tool, and second a bayonet. Sawtooth bayonets and short swords go way back to at least the 1700s, used by artillery crews or field engineers, with the intent of cutting brush and tree branches to set up firing positions. It was as simple as, we need saws to cut stuff, and we need pokey metal bits to fight with close in if need be, why not combine them together so we don't have to carry 2 separate tools.

Chatted to someone about this, the biggest issue Ukraine is having with shotguns is available quantities, they need hundreds of thousands of shotguns yesterday but none of the 'good' manufacturers can churn out half a million magazine fed shotguns in short order. For 100 years shotguns were a specialist weapon primarily for the civilian market with military orders being in low quantities. Now they need to be standard issue for every infantry squad but almost none of the production lines have been able to spool up to cope with demand apart from these cheap Turkish ones.
The idea is to rush the BTS12 to every infantry squad as fast as possible and allow troops to individually purchase their own guns later, its not ideal but more lives will be saved that way.

The Defence post article links to another article which states: "The unit spent some time testing how it is to shoot down drones with shotguns in combat conditions. They started with ordinary double-barrels. Practice has shown that it works. Hatsan Escort was chosen as the best option. And the brigade commander made a decision to purchase such rifles."

Of course we’re talking about shotguns so I’m certain there was already hundreds of equal or better options, BUT, what about the logistics of the situation. So it’s a hard complex decision. Would I carry this weapon for any reason. No because i am blessed to live in a sheltered society where frankly i never have had need to fire a gun in anger regardless. For a mere $400, that actually performed far better than I expected. The designs of Turkish shotguns are usually pretty sound, but they are made on the cheap, so they almost always have problems that a few of hours of knowledgeable labor and some decent tools could work out, but that would probably add a Benjamin or two to the price tag. The old adage that you get what you pay for is not suspended for foreign firearms. There are high-end Turknellis that run pretty damn well, but that is because the main parts are imported, and they are polished, fitted, and assembled in the States. But those could cost you $1,200+, which is significantly less than a Benelli M4, but still not as affordable as a 590 or 870.

hello, I use a similar shotgun as a toy for shooting ranges: Armkson Stm 12, the problem with feeding bullets may result from bad magazines, the twin magazines are for the Typhoon 12 shotgun, but Armkson does not work with them, even though they are visually the same, the shape of the spring is similar, but those for Typhoon have a different spring tension they probably are not able to get the cartridge into the chamber. It would be best to ask the Ukrainians if their equipment works or if they have any problems, because they are probably the best practitioners at the moment. This shotgun has one advantage - it is extremely cheap and compact, which allows for maneuverability and is very important, for example, in a trench or bushes, and for mine, for example, I have 10-round magazines, in Turkey they are available with 20 rounds, which allows for a large series to shoot down a drone.

I have a couple of Hatsan Escorts, and my 410 also tossed the charging handle. Customer Service DID respond, and sent me a replacement handle free of charge.

I'm sure that if you read the manual and do whatever it says to do before using it for the first time, and also to keep the gun working, like, cleaning it, and lubricating whatever they point out, and wherever they say not to, it'd perform at least a notch better. And at this point, it doesn't even matter if that particular shotgun isn't the best. The fact that everyone shows the gun's clear on camera as a way of keeping people in touch with such an important fact, should come along with the RTFM bit of advice as well. How many people know that all manuals come with the warning: "All firearms may fire when dropped", for example? Thanks for the vid. Gonna buy one of those now.

I own the AR model of this gun.....it must always be lubed heavily with oil not gun cleaners and generally is able to eject and feed all high brass rounds using the 2, 5 rd mags provided from Hatsan. There is an issue with other aftermarket mags....I have tried Panzer Mags and needed to stretch the springs to create greater tension which seems to fix the problem. Do not try to use old mags as well. There is also a "recoil" pad at the base of the barrel...which I added a thin layer of hard foam to which also helped cycle some lighter rounds. but in general it will not consistently cycle lighter bird shot rounds..under gassed.

So how far down do you strip it and clean it before each seasonal attempt to make it work for you?
Hey I found a bolt broken but still only intermittently jamming so the butt needed to be mortared onto the ground to release the whole mechanism and eject even a live round...new bolt provided free of charge by manufacturer.
That fault just took a complete disassembly looking for cracks. burrs etc....
      Now it is flawless...
Is the one you bought adjustable re gas off take ?
( I had one that needed one of the two gas ports in the barrel slightly drilled to get it to the same diameter as the other,..hard to see or do at the angle required but gas actions requires gas to operate effectively and reliably)
      What failures do you have:
F to feed (polish out the entire chamber with scotchbrite pads on the end of a forked holder in a battery operated drill chuck to get rid of all plastic and carbon residue)
F to fire (light primer strike caused by shell hanging in rough unpolished chamber so when the firing pin strikes the shell gets pushed forward instead of being held tightly and the primer struck hard)
F to extract (take that extractor to bits and clean it...make sure to spring is the correct one and the hole it operates in is cleaned and burr free)
F to eject (gas passages/gas piston cleaned...ejector in correct position and in good condition..extractor claw sharp, unbroken, unburred
All mechanical things are a system...you just need to find the faults.....and correct them.

It's not high dollar and it has it's drawbacks, but it does what I want it to, when I need it to. Would I want it as a combat shotgun? Definitely not my first choice, but it packs a helluva wallop and can get the job done. It's maneuverable and comfortable to shoot. I bought a Turkish 16 ga. SxS from Cabela's gun shop years ago. Beautiful gun, but Cabela's lied about the features it had. NOT steel shot rated. NOT fixed chokes. The chambers were cut at the extreme limit of tolerance. That means the 16 ga. hulls, once fired, are so oversized they can't be easily resized to fit my 16 ga. Browning which has a nominal diameter chamber. (The industry doesn't sell brass based 16 ga. hulls, which makes resizing the hulls difficult.). Also the blued barrels turned plum color in a year. And warranty? The company failed to supply a warranty card, and gave me a hard time about getting one. No stateside service. I decided it wasn't worth the risk of sending the gun to Turkey.

The reason they would use a phillips head machine screw is because anything remotely phillip shaped will tighten most phillips machine screws. Did you check the manual about what ammo to do the break in with?
Also, some of them need a different gas piston for the faster loads. The manual warns the gun may be damaged without the right gas piston.
These guns are ammo sensitive. I have a bull pup and AR-15 type that work with the manual specified ammo just fine after break in. The 5 shot mags will work with anything but the ten round mags need 2 and 3/4 in with star crimps. The roll crimps are a little too long and will hang up. Standard 2 and 3/4 in OO buck 9 pellet loads at 1325 fps with star crimps will work great IME.
I know this sounds crazy, but with that one I would lock the bolt open and leave it for a month. Then retest with the specified loads.

The problem is not that the Russians or the Ukrainians don't have anti-drone shotguns. They have plenty of those. The problem is that as you stand up and try and use it, - as the 6-7 FPV drones are distracting you, and prompting you to fire at them or go after them, - the 8th drone sneaks up on you from behind and takes your head clean off your shoulders. Do you have any idea how many shotgun enthusiasts like that were buried by both sides? The drones just keep on coming and now you have Russian "Terminator" tracked land drones with aircraft speed cannons and high caliber machine guns fighting Ukrainian FPV drones in the air. You need to work on something better.
