@@interloeper (TWO YEARS LATER LOL) Even with a metronome playing, it still takes a good drummer to stay on beat 100%. Watch the acoustic cover of schoolin'. He really carries that performance with his killer groove.
i really liked this song very much and then I looked up the lyrics and its meaning, now I totally love and relate to the song 100%......According to the band “it’s about feeling very separate from society and your fellow countrymen. To an extreme degree”. Speaking to The Line of Best Fit, Higgs said: It’s written as if I’m rejected from society just about to do something awful. I wrote that at a time when I was feeling quite separate from, even against, society as a whole. I was feeling quite hateful towards my own country and my own place in the world, and feeling like I didn’t really like Britain or what it stands for. I don’t necessarily feel like that all the time, but I do sometimes. The song has this theme of fat pouring down the streets and clogging every hole - that’s how I was feeling about the general public, me included. We’re just this blobby, inactive, privileged, big, pale blob, and I wanted to use this metaphor of this massive fat-tsunami washing through the city streets and going into the gutters. That was how I felt; it was how I felt about a big do-nothing society that hadn’t changed. It all comes back to being fat really… it’s like one of the things that you just see; I’m kind of fat, and I don’t like that about myself. A few of my friends have become conspiracy nuts in the past few years, and I flirted with that idea for a bit, but I realised that it’s really romantic to imagine a world run by reptiles with a super-evil plan masterminding eveything. It’s much scarier, and much more likely, that the people at the top are just fat, bald, old men, like soft-boiled eggs, that are just weak-willed, with no strong feelings (good or ill). They’re lily-livered and easily swayed and quivering and wobbling. To me, that’s a horrible thought, but it also makes me feel guilty: if I was at the top, would I be a weak-willed, quivering, chubby overlord? In terms of the song’s darker stuff, with the line “I’m gonna kill a stranger”, there is also the follow up line: “So don’t you be a stranger…”, which obviously means don’t be a stranger, don’t leave me, don’t go away etc., and it that way it’s almost a cry for help. But then it also means ‘I won’t kill you… if you’re my friend’. It’s got this double-edged feeling throughout. Then the song changes and I’m likening myself to a fat child in a pushchair, sort of helpless and inactive and no use to anyone in the world that needs help. I’m just idle, and no one wants to be idle, but we find ourselves in that position living in this country. We’re passive, and we just get out our phones and move on. I wanted to say that in a sharp, insulting way to maybe make people snap out of that, to make them nervous and embarrassed. It’s not horrifying, but it’s a bit cruel, and I wanted to be cruel to people listening, and to myself. But then I’m saying “It’s alright…” so it’s again this weird accusatory-slash-helpful tone. The song ends with me saying ‘just give me one night, one moment to feel like I’m on the right path’, pleading to just feel like I am helping the world, that I’m not useless. I think people have definitely connected to that and that sentiment of not wanting to continue as a negative or passive force in the world.
further... I think of the line "feeling like a fat child in a pushchair..." maybe in some ways the fat child is semi-content with being pushed around and not having to think too much or use our chubby legs to run and WORK to make a change... which in itself would be a challenge, so maybe its more comfortable to sit in the pushchair. It's quite an internal dilemma when I think of it this way.
It's amazing how fast this band can take you from zero to a hundred. Two days ago I had never heard of them and now I can't stop listening to them. Pure gold.
About 4 months after Man Alive was released I saw them live at an event in a really small venue. They played with three other bands that night, and the venue staff kept trying to say "there are no headliners tonight!" They put Everything Everything on 3rd (out of the 4 bands), to emphasize the no-headliners thing, and then A LOT of people left during the 4th band, actually many before they even started playing... It was clear that 99% of those attending were only there for Everything Everything, even before it all started - it was really cringey, like you could tell Everything Everything knew what was going on :-).
1035pm have you seen their video for schoolin??? I dropped 400ug one night and discovered that song (I knew of them previously) and it blew my mind. Needless to say, they're my favorite band now.
I agree. All of their albums are fantastic. Partially because of their accents, the uniqueness in them, the meanings behind their songs...Everything about them is great. I can't wait for their next album.
not only is this performance absolutely incredible but also all five of them just look fucking amazing here. crushing it. underrated mvp is peter. loving them more every day
I think when anyone listens to this is catches their ear. Makes them think a little more. That's what music, in my opinion, should be. This is why I love EE and Bon Iver. They both make me think a lot when it comes to meaning and depth of what the writers of the song were going through at that moment in time. These guys sing and play with a lot of heart. I love it
What. A . Song. The rawness of this love version only adds to the quality. It's perfect. Do yourself a favour and watch other live versions of their songs recorded professionally on UA-cam. The album versions don't cut the same feel. Don't miss their live shows. From Melbourne 🇦🇺 👊
You guys have really been practising. Great work. This was a highlight of the show the other night in Cardiff. Hope it felt as good for you guys to hear everyone singing along as it did to be in the crowd!
Beautiful piece of music, I used to listen to this when I was younger with my dad and it was stuck in my head it brings back so much nostalgia and the message is so intense especially that I now understand it more
I discovered this because a Texan approached me and said “you know Will, it’s Ok. It’s OK to feel like a fat child in a push chair. Old enough to run. Old enough to fire a gun. That’s O K.” I’m sure there is deeper meaning in it, and I think I looked it up once. But I am still dying of laughter. 💀 Oh important side note, zero context given. I was left to google it.

Consistently brilliant albums after albums. Loving Mountainhead their latest one.

or he has a metronome ticking in his earpiece

Just give me this one night, just one night to feel

Just give me this one night, just one night to feel
Like I might be, on the right path
Old enough to fire a gun...
