I’ve watched two videos and learned so much more than I’ve learned in a year of watching painters on UA-cam and doing step by step paintings. Thank you thank you
Thank you so much Dianne for answering my question about those darned tricky reflections. Your approach to this is so practical and I appreciate how you turn what seems complicated into something that I can understand and apply to my paintings. Wonderful!
Great video. I would like to see a quick tip on mixing complementary colors without getting green. I find myself trying to mix blue and orange and it comes out green
Bauls, that happens when the colors you are using are not exact complements. In the case of blue and orange, if the orange is too yellow and/or if the blue leans towards green (thalo blue or cerulean or prussian blue), the imbalance of yellow will cause the color to turn green. We have to pay attention to the bias of the hue, meaning which way it leans towards its analogous hues.
Thank you for this awesome demo. Should I apply darker yellow on top of wet pure yellow or should I apply it next to pure yellow and blend it at the edge where it meets pure yellow?
Technically, where you want gradation, it works best to place the new mix next to the previous one and blend the edges, but when a dark appears on top of a light, scumbling it on wet into wet works best.
Fred, those darks are darker versions of the same hues given off by the light source. Creating them, we have to watch the value relationship between the boat and the water.
You always cut through the confusing aspects of color mixing and make it simple and understandable. Thank you.....and Merry Christmas!
You are so welcome! and Merry Christmas!
You can’t say enough about color for me. So helpful. The wheel has become a good friend. I love your videos. Merry Christmas Dianne.
Thanks, Eve. Color is my passion, second only to light.

I love your studies. How do you keep your colors on the pallet from drying.
Thomas, see Quick Tip 172 for an explanation of that.
Nice, I think we just make it to complicated. Especially with so many tub colors to choose from. Reading and mixing colors takes practice. Thank you.
Color observation and color mixing get simplified when we learn to read what the characteristics of color are doing. Enjoy the journey!

Wonderful lesson Diane! How are the deep shadows of the boat and its shadow produced?
