Europäische Intellektuelle haben das Fundament für die amerikanische Rechte gelegt, in deren Gedankenwelt der Anti-Intellektuelle Trump verankert ist. Anhand prägender Gestalten wie Edmund Burke - von Alexander Gauland gern zitiert -, Friedrich Nietzsche und Ayn Rand deckt Corey Robin die Kontinuitäten im konservativen Denken auf und stellt viele überraschende Verbindungen her.
In seinem Vortrag führt Corey Robin insbesondere aus, wie ein genauer Blick auf die Geschichte des Konservatismus einen erstaunlichen Befund erklären kann. Einerseits scheint die Rechte in den USA mit dem Amtsantritt Donald Trumps einen Höhepunkt ihres Erfolgs erreicht zu haben: Sie stellt den Präsidenten und verfügt (noch) über die Mehrheit in beiden Kammern des Kongresses. Andererseits deutet vieles darauf hin, dass sie in einer Sackgasse steckt und sich der Konservatismus insgesamt in Agonie befindet.
Corey Robin, Associate Professor of Political Science am Brooklyn College der City University of New York, studierte in Princeton und promovierte an der Yale University. Er ist Autor der Bücher Fear: The History of a Political Idea (2006) und The Reactionary Mind: Conservatism from Edmund Burke to Donald Trump (2., veränderte Auflage 2018). @@hugoshlim what do u understand about conservative intellectuals? Edmund burkle, russel kirk, david hume and thomas sowell, have u ever read anything of what this mans have written? The fact is, the majority of progressive thinkers don’t know a shit about conservative literature, and conservatives know at least the basic literature of social movements, socialism and progressism.
