    As a woman I say bring back the top hat and women can wear Victorian hats with 🌸 flowers too…though which style? I guess doesn’t matter but I guess it would look odd with casual clothes…for formal outings it would be nice. It’s sad it’s hard to bring back.

      As a retired opera singer. A head covering was always obligatory and my head size demanded a man's sizing. Over a 4 decade stint, I've evolved from the felt and straw, wider brimmed gamblers to the shorter crowned and brimmed Coachman as my expected crown (in both wool and straw). I LOVE THEM AND THEY ARE ME! No flowers/veils...just my chapeau's. A top hat can work for a lady!!!

      I say nonsense; forget about what others think. A low crown type of top hat is still worn during dressage equestrian events by both male and female riders and should be fairly easy to find online (though probably not inexpensively). A black silk might be too formal for a casual outfit but any other color especially adorned with flowers would likely look fine. You be you; chose a style and make it your own. . cheers!

    I find the subject of top hats quite interesting to be honest.
    I bought a top hat at a Halloween store for a cosplay of "the Undertaker" from the manga/anime Black Butler, which is set in the late 1880s and I was wondering which decade my hat was the closest to because it seemed a bit tall.
    It appears it's closer to an 1840s top hat... so around 40 years out of style (and honestly way too tall for what I'm going for xD), but it was the only one that I could find at the time, so it'll do the job until I buy a better one. 😅

      With cosplay you don’t really need to worry about being historically accurate, unless that’s your intention. I know black butler isn’t exactly known for its historical accuracy (as someone who’s seen all of it multiple times) so if you’re trying to cosplay any of the characters I wouldn’t worry about the hat too much 😄

    Great video. My favourite type of top hat is most certainly the 1840s/50s, which is also known as the stovepipe hat. In the United Kingdom, it's often associated with Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the renowned civil engineer, whilst in the United States, Abraham Lincoln.

    Hi.
    If you don't know.
    The London 1829 New Metropolitan Policemen Force troops wore Reinforced Sturdy style top hats which were strong enough for standing on to look over people's heads & walls.
    In the year of 1863, the top hats were replaced with the new Helmets, based on the Prussian Spiked Helmet.

    Excellent video! As this is sort of my wheelhouse, I'll add 2 bits of info (please, please correct me if I'm mistaken). Between 1840 and 1850 Antoine Gibus patented a silk top hat around a collapsible metal frame. This is known as an opera hat as its collapsible crown makes it easy to stow when attending the theater or opera. This was considered a specialty hat only that was not appropriate attire outside of very formal wear, after dark, and only when attending an event that didn't allow for proper stowage of a standard topper. Secondly, even today, the silk plush top hat in black is technically the only appropriate hat for white tie and tails. Again, welcome back my friend.

      I cannot stand opera hats myself, so I actually forgot about them when I made this video, so thank you for reminding me 😂 and I do believe that if one was to wear a hat with white tie it would be a top hat, however, white tie is mainly reserved for dinner settings and is rarely worn outside as it is, so I’m not sure if there’s really much hat wearing involved as far as I’m aware

      @@OldGuyVibes Silk hats are worn indoors in certain circumstances, and when one is traveling. The etiquette rules for wearing hats indoors varies, but if one were in a place like a train station the hat would be kept on - it is public and has a high ceiling. Certain venues are the same, such (I believe) museums and the central, public space in a bank. In fact, I believe in most workplaces a hat would be kept on until entering into an office - either leaving a hat on a piece of purpose-made furniture near a door or at one's desk if no such thing existed (for cubicle workers and the like). One having a private office would furnish it with their own hat tree or something similar.
      The issue with this hat off thing is that now a well made hat is often of higher standing than the venue one finds themselves in. Modern restaurants and the ilk fail to provide coat checks (despite cold weather still being a common nuisance the world over) and will tell patrons to leave their hat in their car. Some hat wearers will wear their hat indoors as they see a place or group undeserving of the courtesy if they have no reasonable place to leave the hat - likening it to the wild west where if a place wants to have the standards of a saloon it ought be treated like one. Given a good felt hat costs at least a few hundred USD presently, I am inclined to leave a hat on my head rather than trust the cleanliness of a distant shelf or the seat beside me.
      Now, for silk hats, they are often worn with white tie as dinners organized with this dress code are at venues far more than a simple dining room. I am aware of one group which has organized dinners at a few European palaces - museums and heritage sites today, well preserved and more than amenable to informed and interested members of the public doing such things. As these venues provide sprawling grounds to walk and a number of large public spaces, the silk hat is still a quite desired companion. A good evening dress coat or cloak is also good, as it is what one would wear when walking the streets before arriving at such a place. For those with more reserved tastes there are white tie evening overcoats which are quite clean and plain from the 1930s.

    Great video! I definitely learned a lot. Do you know where one could get a cheap, but good looking and well fitting top hat (could be for any era)? All the cheap top hats I've found are either too big or made out of plastic.

    • @OldGuyVibes
      @OldGuyVibes  8 місяців тому

      unfortunately there's no such thing as a good cheap top hat. The cheapest ones are made of wool, which run from $80--$150 or so, but those aren't historical by any means, better for modern costumes and the like. Anything historical would be made of silk or fur, which are expensive on their own, but also likely have to be custom made. Anything like that you're looking in the $250-$500 range. other than that, straw is the cheapest material, so you can get a decent straw hat for less than $100. That's the best I got :/

    That is very interesting about the crown being round up to a certain date and that the part attached to the from was stretched to fit the head shape. Does your antique top hat have a makers label on the lining?

    • @OldGuyVibes
      @OldGuyVibes  8 місяців тому

      I should have specified, it’s not so much that the crown was purposefully stretched, rather it would conform to the shape of the head when worn

      Ahh I see. That makes sense. Rather like how shoes were originally made on straight lasts, not a left and right, and would take on the shape of the wearers feet. Thank you!
