Many thanks for taking the time to reach out to us. It's a sad and strange one all rolled in together. Why he did what he did will probably always be a mystery.

Hi Brenda, thanks for watching and getting in touch. Its a really sad story and one that I can imagine being shocking back in the day. Something clearly wasn't right with Joseph leading up to him doing what he did and I think today, with more understanding, he could well have been helped and obviously stopped. Also as for the location of the school, thanks for mentioning it as having looked back at the video, at the time we were basing it all on old OS maps.

Thanks for sharing this story. How Tragic to take the life of his own Grandson. If he felt that low after losing his wife maybe he should of seen a doctor instead of of harming an innocent child. Keep your stories coming. Take care mate.

Thanks for watching! I'm trying to find new ways on presenting these videos and rather than it being just me on them, I do try to find things around me when out filming to show people. Unfortunately, the area I recorded this was pretty remote and other than the lagoon and the old looking Raul track, there wasn't that much else to video lol

Read the story on this, the video gives a great insight into the actual scenes, a tragic, tragic story, I dare say today this would have made front page news everywhere, what was going through his mind?? lots of unanswered questions really, the story to pick young John up from school to run an errand looked planned at the time, very very sad, and like you say its a very unusual case. Just a note on Ingham Street the old building on the video is Benson Street Gospel Church (formerly a Presbyterian chapel, the street has been shortened considerably, it stretched to Wilson Street which is well past the Nuttall Street developments, this is shown on 1900 drawings of that area. The street was considerably longer. Fascinating video.

Limefield quarry is known as the sandhills. it was used for off road motorbiking years ago. it is based at the back of walmersley golf course.. the pathwways were you walked at the start are old cart horse tracks. they go on for a good few miles from walmersley over to birtle and over the hills. they were used to transport goods on pack horses from walmersley area to birtle.. or as it was called then bircle dean.. The quarry up birtle is at the top of castle hill road behind a pub called the church inn and st johns church

A very sad tail indeed, especially as it involved ones so young. Given that he had already hit another grandson over the head with a rock, there does seem some planning and indication that he did know what he was doing. I suppose we shall never find out for sure.

I think he knew what he was doing. In court he went on record to say that if his daughter Sarah was home, it would have been her that went down the rock face and not his grandson. I forgot to put that in the video 😒 so yes, there was some planning in my opinion.

another sad case, where children are concerned they trust people to look after them he would have gone to the edge with is granddad but then to be pushed over the fall would have nearly killed him but to go down to him and make sure is terrible ,but was he looking to end his own life knowing the death penalty is in force after all he had nothing to offer I think he new what he was doing . Criss and vickie great stuff

We had read about this story in a book about crimes and punishment, not sure not what it was called, but we purchased it of Amazon a while ago. A sad story at that.

Very good story of a tragic case. My view he knew somewhat what he was doing especially as he tried before with his other grandson. Premeditated I would say. Should he have hanged YES.

Shew another tragedy. I cannot fathom why he decided to kill the children. If you have beef with the family surely you will take it out on the adults. Anyone who can deliberately plot, plan and execute the plan to kill the children is just plain evil. I f I lost.my husband and my family did not want to help me I would take solace in my religious beliefs and if I needed financial help and my family refused to help me I would turn to my religious friends and community. And I know that I will receive help there. But I would make sure that I would be able to pull myself together and seek employment so that I could at least have a modicum of dignity.
The attacks and murder were preplanned. If he had been interviewed by the doctors and they determined that he knew perfectly well what he was doing. The Judgement was just.

A workhouse was where the poorer people went for work or shelter. There is a fascinating article here on these - www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/Victorian-Workhouse/

@@DaysofHorror Oh yes. I remember seeing videos about the workhouse and its horrors. Paranormal groups have also posted videos about these appalling places of so-called refuge.

I'm not sure he WAS insane. He knew enough to make up a rational excuse and cover his tracks with George. It sounds more like he was mad at the world and wanted to hurt his family who he felt abandoned him in his hour of need.

    This is a strange one.
It's definitely a case against bringing back the death penalty.
I don't think he was of sound mind. He still needed punishing, but I think not by hanging.
