This is a great study in tonal values. Overall the color palette is monochrome grays but the contrast between the various shades is expertly handled. Winslow Homers' genius was in his razor-sharp eye for tonal balance and if you're going to ever become skilled at watercolors tonal values are something you're going to have to master.

Hi Sir, it seem's to me you have your own and very original technic : you start with shadows and dark colors. Usually painters use clear colors first, no?
When you debute with watercolor you can be a little afraid to try that. I don't know if i will.

Actually, you paint the darks first, and the highlights last, at least in oil painting.

Correct in watercolor you start from light to dark.

Si je peux me permettre...
Personnellement je ne pense pas qu'il ait mouillé son papier au préalable. Il a a posé le coloris foncé à droite avec un pinceau qui semblait bien chargé en eau + pigments sans que cela ne "fuite" sur le ciel. Idem pour les petites lignes qu'il dessine parfois à certains endroits. Certes la couleur est alors plus crémeuse mais son tracé reste net, ne se dilue pas..
Ce serait le cas je suppose si le support était mouillé mais je me trompe peut-être.
