It's definitely for that, yes, but there are also combat applications (bunkai) in kata. The problem is so many who train in karate never learn past the block-and-counter approach that is prevalent in modern karate, especially Japanese. Don't get me wrong, I ltrain and ove Japanese karate, but I also glean from Okinawan stylists who study and explore bunkai using grappling, joint manipulation, throws, takedowns, etc., as well. We should strive to dissect and analyze kata so we understand them.
Indeed, it is also important to understand that karate does not need to block. This is because the so-called blocks actually strike or grab to the attacking limb.
I learnt this kata when I was 6th Kyu. I was always curious about learning new katas and that's why my Sensei used to teach me everything before hand😊 I recommend you to learn Karate because of self defense and all the new and happy memories you'll make while learning it🤗
I havnt done this Kata in 20 years.due to my bad knee. Been in the back of my head for sometime. Kangkudai is my 1st Dan Kata. Have a tough time with it due to my hip. It’s a bitch getting old. These injuries have made tight as a drum. But doing lots more stretching and did get knee replaced in 2020. Been a slow comeback. But coming back I am.
Man !! I am an old warrior as you, a nidan from 99!!!! Today i had my first black belt training since then i cannot describe how good it was. I performed Gankaku Empi and Kanku Sho they all are still anchored in my memory somehow. Of course technique needs dusting but it’ll come! Keep it up!
@yasseen1690 AWESOME. AWESOME AWESOME. CONGRATS. YEAH 2024. Gabkaku for me. Thought Kangku Dai kicks my butt. Gankaku will do the same the last one leg spin a real mother. Took a long time to nail it. Like the last side snap kick in Kangku Dai. Go for man.
This Kata is fantastic very beutiful and elegent i am 12 and have a purple/white belt (two belts from black :D) i know this kata off by heart and have preformed it in front of a class full of black belts who didnt know it everybody who says that if you are young you are not ready to have a black belt are wrong. i understand what it is to have disaplin and respect i find it really offending when people say that people who are young are not ready for a black belt
The important thing is not to know the kata, but to perform it well. I know all the kata from taikyoku to heian and the first of the bassa and tekki series respectively. I know a couple 7 star mantis forms and one southern mantis form. I personally use only taikyoku shodan and the southern mantis form to train. All the others are good to know and remember, but I guarantee you that I have gotten better at all my other kata just by practicing only those two. I only need those two to fight anyway. So that's 10 shotokan kata, 3 7 star mantis forms and 1 southern mantis form, and I only choose 2 of the 14. I suggest you all think about this.
Kata Kanku Sho Kanku Sho which means seeing the sky, consists of 48 movements One of the most beautiful times the Showtos is a famous time for black - backed apparatus that includes many beautiful and interesting techniques with two campings at this time and effective showing in changing body movement this time requires a high level of skill pay attention to the bodies of players who move gently and quickly along the cat Some of the movements and techniques that are used at this time kaiten-tobi - spinning jump m
I knew ,kanku sho it's called the "hello of the sun",, Jitte means "10 hands".Anyway in Sensei H.Kanazawa+ book from 80's i discovered very explicit 12 kata's but in those years was forbiden to do this sport in my country.
Watching the dude do the jump amazes me. Was training earlier and landed on the side of my leg and nearly broke my hip. Still choosing it for my 2nd Dan grading of course.
😂Need to play a kata, jitte for example(the most simple) and get a black belt.😀These are the actual people i think in mentality.Anyway i like your comment.
This is vastly different than how I was taught. Where he goes straight back and forward for the punch, grab, lock, backfist, I was taught those go at angles. The Side kick elbow I was taught go forward and back. And before the jump 320 was several different stances, including a energy building chi style move before a double palm strike. Those are just a few of the differences... But I do study an American Karate style rather than an old style shotokan karate, still odd how different they are
bobbicals - As it is American Karate in 2014+, we don't use the traditional Japanese, Korean, or Chinese terminology because it doesn't make sense to use a language most American's don't know. Easy to understand for the majority is kind of what we go for. - When I was training 20-30 years ago we did. However, it is my belief that things evolve to the easiest understandable option available to be as effective as possible.
TurnersKarate It may be an American Karate form, we shouldn't try to simplify it. Other things, such as simple tasks like washing clothes, are changing, but Karate is not as easy as that. We should try to stick to harder times, because in some cases, we must.
Liam Foley Not trying to simplify the form just the terminology used to describe it. Keeping in mind that in the earlier days of martial arts in America it was mainly older men doing it, not mainly little kids, what you say coordinates (to a degree) with that. However, trying to teach a younger kid both a foreign language, it's meaning, and throw the form into that makes teaching less effective, and we shouldn't follow that path imo. --- If you're unaware, this form is Chinese in origin. And the terminology was also changed by Gichin Funakoshi to translate easier to the Japanese students he had around the 1930s.
@bobbylord120 Finally somebody who understands. I have just earned my Brown Belt. Good luck with you'r belts and I hope you get you'r Black Belt soon :D
he did not return to center and i think it is because of how he did the sidekicks. shouldnt you bring your left foot to your right foot after you do the side kick to the left and are going to side kick to the right? then again what do i know?
I am realy sad seeing all these "karate grandmasters" talking about young black belts. At the end of the day, its not the belt, who is going to kick your ass
maybe ur watching fighting as your vs an opponent, its really you vs yourself, if you look at it like that then ud see kata and kumite is one and the same
So, I'm a first dan and i have to choose a kata soon for my 2nd dan grading next year. Ive leanr meikyo, tekki nidan and bassai sho and i learnt this kata last night. oh dear, I seriously hate it as I really hate jumps in katas, useless for bunkai in my opinion!
@Solwen02 I was expressing towards @gaiadove that kata IS the fighting part of Karate as well. You can not, and should not, take the combative essence out of Karate.
normally yes, but at least in Konku Dai, all sidekicks with the exception of the first one are performed in place, without bringing the standing leg in. Not sure if it's the same deal for this Kata because i forgot it -____- lol
@ishaancrazyboy yeah right if kung fu owns karate then how the hell is karate the most known and most popular martial art in the world answer me that or else keep your opinions to youself
RIP Sensei KANAZAWA! Excellent kata execution! Watch also the Late great Sensei Taiji Kase, and late Sensei Enoeda!

Oss. Shotokan 2nd kyu. Totally agree
This bunkai is modern reconstruction, no more.
l can explain all movies in kata as a football technics - but its no be right way.

Starting training for my second dan today. This is my choice for kata. I'll be visiting this video dozens of times over the next several months!
This was my favourite kata when I used to practice and still is!

I always think my katas are terrible and need improvement. I think it is part of the journey.
Im yellow belt and i know this kata and the 5 heian, im really proud of my progress.
Im brown belt and i consider you froget kanku sho because you will kind of froget the other heians which are more important
Im purple belt and i know the 5 heians, tekki shodan, bassai dai, jion and enpi

You don't use traditional names for techniques in American Karate?
+bobbicals Most do. I go to a traditional karate school and we call them by their names.

Kata from master
Hirokazu Kanazawa
@gaiadove so? Did you?
why Kanazawa does the second Kiai in the jump of shuto uke and not in the last oi tsuki ?
I am realy sad seeing all these "karate grandmasters" talking about young black belts. At the end of the day, its not the belt, who is going to kick your ass
doktormozg I'm so agree with you ! Black belt doesn't mean the Karatéka is better that a blue by example !
Truer words have never been said.
maybe ur watching fighting as your vs an opponent, its really you vs yourself, if you look at it like that then ud see kata and kumite is one and the same
Best kata to perform are Kanku Dai and BasaiDai in turnaments well my friend told me that.
MobileGuns choose the kata that you are comfortable with
2022??
kangkusho its like enpi mixed with unsu and heian yondan :D
Kanku - Sho and Kanku - Dai , Bassai - Sho and Bassai - Dai are Master's katas. Don't be surprised, you can't do them.
I'm 16 years old and I do Bassai - Dai and Kanku - Dai
i am 14 and looks like 16-17 yellow belt that want to compete with black belts with kanku dai -sho and bassai dai
In my style, Bassai Dai is before Kanku Sho - by 5 katas. Rohai, Empi, Saifa, Seipei, and Sayunchen separate them.
Heian Yondan is also like that... and it has side kicks too...
@Theivv Yes, a Kata is a fight vs an imaginary enemy. :)
I'm about to have my 1rst Kyu. Can I present that Kata at the exam?
You should not, you should do jion, kanku dai, enpi or basaidai
Do basaidai, not this
Tenho q voltar a fazer karate parei na faixa roxa!!
Isn't it a Shuto Baraï after the kick jump ?
Is it? Is a 10th Dan Master doing the kata wrong and is being corrected by a You Tube 2nd Kyu?
KeyMon i don't recall there ever being one. you might be doing a different style.
Nessa versão o kiai é no salto
@ishaancrazyboy: do u really think ur gonna convince everyone who does karate to do kung fu?

The Kata itself was made like 100 years ago. Why are you so surprised about 2017
