The Nicolas Brothers was truly awesome. Notice how the music was synchronized with their dance steps that's phenomenal. All of this was done in one take. The great Cab Callaway was a major part of the music scene during the early 1920's. He was a legend of that era. Speaking in jazz and scat. Very innovative. RIP to all the greats.
All in one take! The strength, precision and talent of the Nicholas Bros is still unmatched. There's a Documentary about them that's worth a watch. They danced right through all the adversities and gave us an incredible gift. My favorite collab with the Master Cab Calloway 😀💕
Yes, that's scatting. According to a History of Jazz series I heard about 20 years ago, it was invented by Louis Armstrong. He and his band were in the studio cutting some records. During one song, his sheet music fell off the music stand. Because it would been expensive to start over, he just kept going, inserting nonsense syllables. I love this piece so much, I watch reactions to it any time it shows up in my YT suggestions. When reactors are amazed at those first splits, I invariably think 'You ain't seen nothing yet!' Now go watch the live-action version of 'Friend Like Me'. At the end, Aladdin and the Genie do jump-splits down the stairs in homage to the Nicholas Brothers.
If I remember correctly, they DID NOT practice this a lot. It's been reported that they did not rehearse and did it in one take. They were just that good.
Love this and seen it before. However I am sore just watching them. First ?I could never do one split, let alone get up again. Then do it multiple times. I do love the music too. The were on a movie with Glen Miller I saw on UA-cam, just can't remember the name. Great there too.
You can check out Down Argentine Way and Chattanooga Choo Choo & Dorthy Dandridge dance numbers. The Nicholas brothers showcase some impressive dance moves in both of those.
So uncanny how they jumped up on those tables.....such feline grace and agility......they did this in ONE take because Fayard (the oldest of the two) didn't want to rehearse all night. NOBODY today comes even close; we will never see their like again
I only found one video of the Nicholas Brothers from 1936. Is call "Looky Number" when they were kids. They sing and dace in this video. ua-cam.com/video/7IBteauWsHA/v-deo.html
As much as I admire The Nicholas Brothers, and love this performance, it was NOT filmed in one take. Anyone who studies movies and know a little about how they are filmed, will note that there are Ten different cuts during their time on screen. Every time the angle changes, that is a sign of a different camera setup. There are also a number of cuts in the Cab Calloway sequence, notable when he interacts with the orchestra.
Fred Astaire said this was the best dance scene ever filmed.
The didn't practice ,they discussed what they wanted to do and did it in one take. This movie was made in 1943.
The color version is even better!

They were 29 and 22 when this was done.

Great reaction. 👍 I have NO idea how they did that, incredible dancing.
Best to ever lace em up.
1 rehearsal and 1 take
Despite the "painful"splits, they went on to have children!LOL

There talent came from God.

What they actually said was they didn't rehearse the splits coming down from the stairs.
I would say they would have to rehearse for the sake of the camera crew if nothing else
It could not have been filmed if the camera crew could not plan the positioning and movement of the cameras and what ever Cranes or dollies were used

Check out a clip of them as kids singing and dancing " LUCKY NUMBER "
This is from the movie stormy weather. Only one take to do it.

"Let's see those splits again. Ooh, that hurts!"
*grabbing my popcorn
Down Argentina Way, Nicholas Brothers
Yes its scatting. That was the thing in the 30s and 40s
👌👍This is from the movie Stormy Weather. I think you'll love it.✌️🤗
No saxophonists were hurt during the filming of this video (though at least one got worried!).
He was the best part of the video. He kept playing, though!
React to "Down Argentine Way" with the Nicholas Brothers!!
They did this in only one take no practice.
I only found one video of the Nicholas Brothers from 1936.

Could some be A - B roll cuts? I’m not too familiar with film production practices from that era so I’m asking.
Impossible for this to be one take! I honestly don’t believe it….
Look up some Danny Kaye
They did the whole thing in one take
Yep.
Yep. Scatting
