This has nothing to do with Conan, but when I was a kid, I was OBSESSED with a movie that not many people seem to talk about despite having an AMAZING combination of stop motion and practical effects, a movie called Dragonslayer. It's not a horror movie, it's more of a fairly standard fantasy-medieval adventure about a young man vs a scary dragon, but this movie was rated PG and it features plenty of themes and violence that just wouldn't fly with that rating nowadays, it also features one of the best looking dragon effects ever filmed.
Predator with Arnold has got to the best practical effects I’ve ever seen when he pulls that mask off as a 7 year old I honestly thought I was looking at a real life alien ,looks so realistic.
Dude I'm 41, I first saw this movie when I was 11 or 12 and had no idea Andre the Giant was involved, thank you for the fun fact, made my childhood so much cooler 😎👍
1:54, the creature was designed by 3 time Oscar Winning Effects Artist Carlo Rambaldi. He won Oscars for VFX for King Kong 1976, ALIEN 1979, and E.T. in 1982.
Speaking of snakes, I really enjoyed David Patrick Kelly in 1984's Dreamscape, where he turns into a "snake-man". That whole film was pretty enjoyable, with Dennis Quaid in the lead role, and directed by Joseph Ruben, who also made The Stepfather (1987), and, er, Sleeping With the Enemy (1990).
You should tremors I feel everyone has forgotten about the movies if they we’re ever famous and I think they should get some more recognition and great video like always
Ive always liked this movie. I saw both Conan movies when I was a kid, and I liked this one better because it was more fantasy adventurey, and the first one is more dark and dreary. As an adult I like the first one much better, but I still appreciate the Dagoth fight scene. Its the only thing in both movies that comes close to Conan taking on an actual otherworldly monster like he does in the books. It might be the best scene in both movies. Invaders from Mars was a movie I thought was a fever dream for a long time. I saw it as a kid, and then later forgot about it. Ive never heard anyone talk about it before, so I thought it was a dream I had. Then later I saw screenshots of it, showing that it was actually real, and it took me a like a year to figure out what movie it was from. Great movie that I think Ive only ever seen mentioned here.
I'd love to see you discuss the practical effects (among other things) for The Fly and the lesser known Fly 2 which had some terrifying practical effects all throughout
I agree, after "The barbarian" this movie is a huge let down, but the monster is pretty dope. It always struck me as being a bit "Lovecraftian", really.
absolutely. and not just from his appearance. the way they talk about him is like a cult. they (deep ones, great old ones)dont come here to nurture humanity... they come to end it.
@@alanguages no, he wasnt. dagoth was literally just a murder and rape god, thats literally all he did. lovecrafts dagon was a giant fishman , whos sole purpose is to bang a giant see snake and make more fishmen. go read the fucking book.
I personally don’t think that the movie was such a let down as some say. Whereas the first movie showed the tragic childhood, the youth and upcoming of Conan, this movie showed his life after his breakthrough as a well established hero and thief with him and his fellowship on the journey to find a way to get his old love back. Sure, the movie’s tone was more bright and you hadn’t that many tragic events and fights, but in relation to the plot and what had happened before, Conan couldn’t really undergo another path as he already became a known hero and thief and got his freedom. His only motivation was his lost love and to see yet another religious cult with another goal was nice to watch. Plus you had a great variety of places: From a gorgeous castle to forest, an enchanted castle made of crystal in the mittle of a lake to an old dungeon. There was a lot to warm the heart of someone that likes fantasy. The creatures where also creative and interesting. To me it was pretty nostalgic and seemed like an adventure of a dnd group or a HeroQuest campaign. In conclusion I would say that the movie is a good one, once you give it a chance and let it into your heart.
Hey Dragoncurve, I know you’re pretty much an expert on aquatic horror so I thought I’d go to you with this… It had to be around 2005 and my brother and I were watching this movie on television where these kids were raising this sea monster. At what I believe was the end, these people on a yacht were fishing and lifted a severed sharks head. Then the fully grown sea monster swallowed their boat whole. That scene blew my mind, and I’ve been looking ever since to find out what movie it was. If you have any ideas or (hopefully) have seen the movie, that would be awesome. Or if anyone else has ideas, please let me know. Thank you!
There was a TV show called Surface around that time, I watched it and liked it but it only lasted for like half a season. I haven’t seen the show since then but what you described vaguely rang the bell.
The Dreaming God, later referenced (read: ripped off whole cloth) in Morrowind. The musical cue that sounds when he comes to life is what really brings the scene together. Plus the tone of the first film with the supernatural monster of this one would pair perfectly for the ideal Conan adaptation.
In 1988, there was a made for TV miniseries called "Something is Out There" which I've never heard anyone talk about. It was one of those shows where I talked about how cool it was to my classmates, and then overhead the teachers in the office talking about how good it was. Everyone watched it. Everyone liked it. I can’t believe you don’t like DESTROYER. I have always loved this movie. Excellent Conan story. Always fun to watch. I always loved how they added a little bit of humor, and the story is excellent. Some of the effects are a little lacking, but the script is excellent. Love it.
Yeah man, I remember watching this when I was a kid and that scene was just burned into my brain, so much I barely remember the rest of the movie and that's probably for the better. But when Ahnold rips that horn out it's just brutal. Definitely an underrated moment in 80s cinema.
It's a nifty design for a monster, and played by an absolute legend, but it does put me in mind of a quote by the Austin Powers character Fat Bastard, after he lost all the weight . . . .
I was honestly about to list Invaders From Mars until you beat me to it. Seeing it again after so many years on Svenghoulie last weekend showed me how much it still holds up in terms of effects and creepy atmosphere.
It's worth remembering that suit contained the massive bulk that was Andre the giant. Many stuntmen and actors that usually fill a full body suit are on the slender side.
I always thought the Slayers from Krull were very creepy and underrated. That squeal when they die and then their innards burrowing into the ground is nightmare fuel
Oh my gosh! I gotta look this fight up mow! This dagoth is like a tokusatu show monster done with higher special effect! That mouth is incredibly intimidating and gross i love it!
Man it's been a good 20 years since I've seen this one... I remember finding this thing freaky as hell as a kid. I'mma gonna have to give this a rewatch.
the design of Dagoth seems to be inspired by the Gugs, a race that appears in H. P. Lovecraft's "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" who also have that horizontally opening mouth
Consider Dagoth: Queen Taramis was convinced that she could control him. Why was that? I think it had to do with the sacrifice needed to awaken Dagoth. She was going to use the beautiful, kind, innocent Princess Genna, but Conan and company screwed that up. Right at the critical moment, when the high priest was about to sacrifice Genna, Zula speared the old bugger. That rotten, evil old man then became the sacrifice. So instead of getting a kind, loving, easy to control Dagoth, Taramis got DAGOTH!!! I mean, the statue doesn't even start to turn ugly until after the priest dies. Then Taramis shows some actual fear, because she knows what went wrong. So...it's kind of Conan's fault. At least he fixed his own mess.
DUDE, 100%. Conan the Barbarian is such an amazing movie. This watered down sequel is fun but pales in comparison. But Dagoth and that final battle - THAT is the paperback fantasy/Marvel comicbook Conan fighting a proper monster.
I think what makes the is creature unique is the amalgamation of its being. Its got large fins like a fish, scaly tail like a reptile and mounted body of a bear!( Thanks Andre for that!) It makes you wonder what the monster could have looked like had the ritual gone right! I love thia mosnter as well as the others in this film! 80s sure had many awesome ones!
Great video! Saw this movie years ago, and this monster is really the only thing I remember from it. Would love to hear you talk about about the paperback series in a future vid!
The snake in the first movie looks unconvincing because John Milius isn't really interested in special effects. He cares about swords, not sorcery. That's why he allowed the special effects team to get away with the snake.
I love this monster and the whole scene really builds up this apocalyptic beasts resurrection. Arnie looks great too. Like you said, proper barbarian look to him.
When I was a kid, I saw two movies that impressed me, but I don't know or remember the name...one is DREAMSCAPE of 1984, but the other I not know the name: is about a alien ship crash in earth, a guy discover the pilot of the ship, the ship. the ship was carrying alien prisoners to a space prison, those who escape and this man begins to look for them and hunt them, along with a girl...
4:39 ok now i'm disappointed in you, the snake scene is perfect. I don't know man, I've seen people saying that dragonslayer is crap and is compared to montpayton.
You should talk about a movie called Virus. It's about a crew who finds a ship in the middle of the ocean and they want to take it to land to claim the insurance but the shipnis full with machine/zombie creatures.
Practical effects freaked me out as a kid and the monsters in Destroyer, especially Dagoth, still freak me out the most to this day. Also Love Destroyer and The Barbarian the same. Both have something the other didn't and wished they made another.
Compared to the majority of Hollywood movies after 2002 is Conan the Destroyer a masterpiece and Dagon is so well created, that I would never guess that it is a man in a costume.
How about the monsters from The Kindred and Leviathan? I think you show the latter briefly in this video. I know it isn't an '80s movie, but how about the monster from Split Second? And no, I'm not talking about Kim Cattrall....
Maybe you can help me, there was this monster movie I used to see but never watched in movie gallery in the late 90s/early 2000s I believe it was set in South America it was a green possibly reptilian jungle monster I believe, again I never watched it wish I would have definitely a lower budget film I’m pretty sure gave me carnosaur vibes anyway I can’t find any reference online to it would you maybe know?
I love the conan mythos in general. I've read the comics and the books, and it's a rich world. With all the recent series centering on Fantasy I feel the Conan franchise is full of untapped potential. It has a lore as extensive as Game of Thrones but you could make it far bloodier than they could ever hope to be.
Nobody even talks about the Lovecraft connection with this film, this is the dagon from Lovecraft that Conan kills. I loved Arnie's wrestling match with that mutant in the mirror room that was great.
5:21/5:33 - 5:35 What about any of the creatures from Dune (if you count them as monstrous)? Also have you read the original novel and what were your thoughts on that 2021 film (if it was any good or not)?
To be fair, I wasn't thought of in the 80s. i was born in the 90s, and I am sure that when i was a toddler or sometime after i was 7 that a lot of shit i saw have not left me for years until when i became older the more i realize what is happening. then ive been fasinated by the 80s movies. first time i saw this monster, i couldn't get the vision of the transformation out of my head and it freaked me the hell out, like a few other scenes in the 80s movies i couldnt get out of my head.
I loved this movie when i was young, I was an early bloomer and had a huge crush on that princess. i'll have to give it another look, I just wasnt paying attention to monsters at the time. those pics of arnie and andre and wilt are so fucking adorable. I want them on my wall.
0:50 it’s nice to see I’m not the only person who has multiple copies of the same book(s). I generally have at least one for reading and one for display 😅
I wouldn't be surprised if Dagoths look inspired that one monster fought in Resident Evil 2. The one that bursts out of Ben if you play as Leon or Chief Irons if you play as Claire. They do look a little alike only the monster in RE2 doesn't have a horn obviously
Dagoth definitely deserves more attention. Speaking of 80s films with interesting monsters, have you seen the 1989 Japanese film, The Mamiya House, also known as Sweet Home? It has a giant humanoid monster that's downright creepy.
Hey klayton fiory I finally got to see u in the small clip from hack the movies yay 😁 u look awesome bro God bless your voice is so chill and relax bro nice seeing you 😁😁🙏🏾🙏🏾
There were so many great Howard stories to choose from. Destroyer was a very big disappointment to me. I wish Arnie had been able to get King Conan off the ground. I loved the snake in the Barbarian, however. You're right about Dagon, though. Very cool. I liked the scene where they save Mako from the cannibals. Nothing like decapitations to make a good Conan scene. Going for the PG rating was the first mistake with Destroyer. They sacrificed the spirit of Howard's hero in order to generate more ticket sales, and ended up with a big pile of excrement.
3:53 Have you ready any of the Conan comics and what are your thoughts on them? I know that recently it's been under scrutiny for some "cultural misuse and disrespect".
I've always enjoyed Conan the Destroyer, and agree with another poster that it had more magic and fantasy elements than the first Conan movie. One thing I never understood was if the monster was a form Dagoth took, was his true form, or happened because the ritual was interrupted. That form is drastically different than the statue! Speaking of special effects movie monsters from the 80's, what do you think of the dragon, Vermithrax Perjorative, from 1981's Dragonslayer? I think she is the best movie dragon. That movie used to be one of my favorite fantasy movies; I loved the standoff between the dragon and the wizard, and I liked its historical feel, although now I think the movie rather slow.
The 80s version of The Blob goes way harder than I think people remember. Definitely an underrated 80s monster movie.
Yeah I prefer the 80s version to the original. It's alot more entertaining and gory.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Dagoth's designers some of the same folks that did the Cantina scene from Star Wars?
More people need to see Proteus and the weird shark monster that movie has.
Scary 80s monsters? Gremlin from The Twilight Zone Movie, and The Beast from Krull
Dude I have always loved that monster! Ripping out the horn was brutal!!!
4:28, that was a pretty cool crossover episode, talking about the R rated Conan The Barbarian.
Dagoth definitely deserves more attention. Speaking of 80s films with interesting monsters, have you seen the 1989 Japanese film, The Mamiya House, also known as Sweet Home? It has a giant humanoid monster that's downright creepy.
Agreed but I also think the ape man creature in the room of mirrors was pretty damn creepy.
Destroyer will always pale in comparison to Barbarian. The first Conan has the greatest soundtrack ever.
Tar Man from Return of the Living Dead! Underrated
Brains?
The monster from The Relic (1997)
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😁
I have never heard of this monster but now seeing this video of it...i agree it does look seriously cool for a guy in a suit.
Keep up the great work👍👍
3:53 Have you ready any of the Conan comics and what are your thoughts on them?
I know that recently it's been under scrutiny for some "cultural misuse and disrespect".
I don’t know much about them tbh. More into the books
great vid channel man
Had no idea this movie had a monster, interesting lol
I'd LOVE to have an action figure of this guy!
That would be cool.
Yes!! That's what Ive been talking about for almost 40 years!
👍 I have always preferred the 2nd Conan over the 1st.
Reminded me of the horned giant from "Sinbad: eye of the tiger" from '77
