I use Transferwise to hold my funds that I will be using for vacation in Philippines and wherever I may be passing through to get there. It's only my opinion but I think it's a great place to save the funds you know you'll have an idea you will be spending in that country for vacation. Example I usually go to Hong Kong first, then Philippines. While on my layover I can use their debit card in Hong Kong dollars and not worry about my own bank declining my regular card because I would forget to tell my bank and my card won't work. That's my thoughts.

I have used TransferWise for small amounts from the US to Thailand. Excellent rate fee and exchange rate as well. Unfortunately they are not able to transfer funds the opposite way...from Thai Baht to US Dollars. Just be aware of these limitations. Banks in Thailand can easily do the transfer but clip you on the exchange rates and then change you a fee based on the total amount of US funds that you are transferring.

I am surprised to read of your experience here. While Japan and Serbia might be different, my understanding is that greatly touristed countries such as Thailand offer better rates exchanging cash at exchange booths *at the destination*, specifically at non-bank 'SuperRich' in Bangkok. I am talking for under $1000 anyway.

I just sent money from HK to Thailand, exchanging HKD to THB. When I enter the amount of THB I bought into an online exchange rate, i.e., where they show the middle point between the spread, it was EXACTLY what Transferwise charged me in HKD. Add to that a transparent fee that is around .8%. Not bad for two currencies that trade against each other in modest volumes. By comparison, my HK bank currently has about a 7.5% "we buy/ we sell" spread AND I would've paid wire fees on both ends. Between the spread and the fees, I could've easily been out US$100, and instead I'm out US$5 thanks to Transferwise.

I didn't have much luck with TW. To me, a bank should be very much like a utility company. It's got to work all the time, every time. When I flick the switch I expect the lights to come on. When I turn the heat on I expect it to work. When I send funds from my USD account to my GBP account I expect them to arrive. TW randomly blocks transfers without any explanation or notice and takes forever to return the funds. Yes they have great rates and you can save 2% on the exchange but you're risking 100% of the capital if they block the funds and take ages to return them.

Be aware that Wise can deactivate and close your account without notice and without clarifications, but the worst thing, that they will not refund what you have in your account, it happen to me with more than $2k in my account. The CS is not helpful at all, they keep responding to my emails with the some generic answer.
The other bad thing about Wise, if someone send you a transfer while your account is deactivated, it will not be rejected as they always say in their rules, it will be accepted and added to the funds that you can't be refunded.
Think twice Before Using Wise and similar fintech, make your research, thousands of people get their saving locked in Wise and never refunded.

That’s why Wise is more suitable for overseas travelers, with a Wise Travel Card linked to their Wise account, to make cashless small payments at Point of Sale terminals and to withdraw local currencies at ATMs. And the balance amount in the account should be kept low in case the company goes bankrupt or freezes your account. In other words, use Wise as a tool for convenience while traveling and nothing else.

I have used them for years.
Results vary, from super fast (3 minutes) international, to blocking a same currency 3rd party deposit.
Did they let me or the depositor know? Nope.
They would only allow the deposit through with the full legal name and dob of the depositor.
It was a private sale and he got spooked, understandably.
It took a further 3 weeks and a different bank to close the deal.

Send a very small Euro transaction to my account with them about a year ago from one of my exchange accounts (which uses a german bank as third party to make these possible)
Transferwise refused it because they had a policy to not take transactions from any place involved with crypto. The perfectly legal transaction went back to the 3rd party with which I had no account etc so I basically lost the money.

@@Burevestnik9M730 It was from the Kraken exchange which used Fidor AG for the Sepa payment. Yes, agree would have been stupid with a meaningful amount, but did with a smaller one to explore what was possible at the time to potentially give me more options in a hostile environment , in case my domestic bank suddenly would take a similar stance. So it was mostly a test tbh. Kraken has now obtained a banking license through Wyoming if I remember correctly and crypto is moving into institutional realms so it's no longer a worry for me to explore these ways as it was back then. I just thought it increadily stupid of TW not to accept these type of clients and have a segment of a growing industry, but yeah that's up to them I suppose. I am trying to send money on a regular basis to my wife in the Philippines. I was going to try Transferwise (Wise now) but I was not happy with the way they use my personal information. Therefore, I cancel my application, but now, they are pestering me every time I open any browser and I cannot stop them. Any suggestion on how to stop or delete them?

I thought their fee was a bit high, but they did send my money (US -> EU) pretty fast.
Although at the end of the day I'd like to use crypto if I can. Need an exchange that can operate with my EU bank account.

I used them for Naira (Nigeria) transfers and they were super quick.... but, using bitcoin is far better rate. But I agree, between GBP, EUR and USD, hard to beat. Great video Andrew. How about one on where to avoid KYC you mentioned can be so annoying?

Hi Andrew, I love your videos. Took your advise and am in the process of buying property in Serbia. I tried using transferwise sending to Serbia and it got there eventually, but the middleman fees seem exorbitant. Maybe it's the Serbian bank I'm using? Can you suggest one that will accept Euros and not rip you off?
