So good to hear from you. It's been a while since we've trained together in Germany. The world has definitely become more violent since those courses. As such, BE A HARD TARGET
Jim, this is indeed the first ever instructional from which I learned about you and your RBPP system 12 years ago (thanks to me being a Böker "fanboy" 😂) and it was eye-opening! I want to thank you 🙏🏼 from the bottom of my heart for EVERYTHING you have let me learn from your wisdom, wishing you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a healthy new year. May our God and Lord Jesus Christ bless you 🫶🏼
Yes, it was my Knife Survival course that got the attention of your government, and then in 1999 I trained your national counterterrorist team, GSG9, then again in 2000, and then federal agencies, and then the military police, and then 10 years of training many more units and martial artists like you in person. God bless you also, and Merry Christmas 2024! Your instructor, Jim BE A HARD TARGET
From my experience practicing full speed no rules knife fights back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, this is the best most realistic knife defense I have seen in any video on the Internet. I would like to add my two cents though, which you may or may not find worth it. (1) Avoiding an attack in the first place I feel is very frequently over looked. Being aware of one's surroundings, make good judgement over when a situation is more or less safe and changing where you go and how you hold yourself can make a very large difference in whether you get attacked in the first place. Of course, this knife defense means that preventative measure has failed. (2) NOISE !!! I didn't hear Jim mention noise. The moment you think someone is really going to attack you, start making a lot of noise. Yell, scream, whatever, but noise attracts attention and attackers typically are very worried about attracting attention, which means even if no one is listening, the attacker might be so worried someone is hearing they break the attack off. (3) Use your surroundings. Maybe there is nothing to help, but a jacket could help you bind up a knife as you try to get two hands on the attackers hand or arm. A chair, coffee pot, book, umbrella, bottle, table, or whatever might be useful to create a threat against the attacker to maybe keep them at a distance or even injure or disable them or to get between you and them to make it harder for them close to to actual fighting range or make an opening to run. (4) Running/escaping is great, but assuming to can run, you need to make a judgement call as to whether you can successfully run, because if your attacker can outrun you, trying to run will just get you stabbed in the back. I had one real experience where 4 guys jumped me in the street and began attacking me, I managed to create an opening to run, and I successfully ran to a point I could get help and that ended the fight, but I was young and could run fast. Now I am old and chances are anyone attacking me could outrun me, so if I were attacked now running would be out, period. Getting attacked with a knife is very, very dangerous. Probably you best hope is that the attacker does not really strongly want to kill you. If they are robbing you, maybe you could yell "take my money, I'll give you all my money. You win. Don't kill me." If you can delay things, make it harder on them to simply stab you, your chances go up. But, do not be over confident and think you can challenge and beat them because you are so good with your bare hands, something I have heard a lot of young strong men claim.
Thank you so much for your comments. Everything you said is a BIG help to the viewers of this channel. I agree with you that not all details about knife survival are in this video, although in some of my other videos I cover a few of them, and in the future I'll eventually try to cover all the points you mentioned. Great job! BE A HARD TARGET
The roughest part is when the attacker actually fights firmly with the non knife hand. The knife hand attacking from behind. This is the prison shank method. It's almost unstoppable. Especially if the assailant is of considerable size. Many times they get in close and try to.push your face to block your view for a second. Yes, I have had entanglements with knives. Luckily I was young and fast. I found chairs and other object are your best friend.
I'm no expert at knife defense but & I understand the concept of getting control of the weapon but very hard especially if the person with the knife attacks also with his other hand. Like one noter & respected expert whose name I won't mention says, you have to hurt the attacker so bad that he no longer wants to attack by utilizing basic hand & foot strikes. Combatives & NOT fancy martial arts techniques. If the confrontation is unavoidable, look for a weapon of opportunity if at all possible or carry a legal weapon such as a folder, kubaton etc. It doesn't hurt to be preemptive in your defense also if backed in a corner like this.
Yes, absolutely, the goal is to stop the attacker before they even get close to you. That may mean using a weapon, such as a gun, before he comes within 21 feet (7 meters) of you. It may mean any impact weapon or edged weapon, and it may even mean a good kick before the attacker gets too close. However, the Jim Wagner Knife Disarm Rule is for when the attacker has already penetrated your RED ZONE and you have no weapon. You just have to control the knife hand the best you can, and get some distance. And, as I mentioned in the training video, if you have no way to escape, then you do what you have to do to get that knife out of his hand. And you are also right that this situation is "very hard." It is, that's why I stick with basic principles that follow a logical order. BE A HARD TARGET
So, the right thing to do is make your argument on HOW to SUCCEED. The whole purpose of my channel is to seek "the truth of combat," and that is done with details. BE A HARD TARGET
@@jimwagnerrbpp Yes, exactly. We all want to SUCCEED in life. We don't want to mimic the losers. There are many ways to realistically disarm a knife-attacker. Go look it up. Be the VICTOR, not the VICTIM.
So this a video more about how to _escape_ a knife-attacker, even though you're skilled in the martial arts. Running away is not always the answer either, pal. The answer is to give him so much pain/discomfort that he will lower himself to the floor/ground. If running away is the answer, even for martial artists, then how can they make themselves useful? What was all that training for, to attack animals? This is stupid. This video is for cowards. Don't run away unless you're forced to. DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE BLADE.
@@jimwagnerrbpp No, because that's a different kind of animal. If you're skilled in the martial arts, it's ok to run away from someone carrying a loaded gun. If he points one at you at close range, you have a greater chance of survival because you then could disarm the gunman. Fuck everyone else who says you can't.
A very humble , God fearing and excellent instructor I learned a lot from from in his seminar in Germany.
