We came to this farm to build community. Physically, with our home here, but also to grow sustainable food for our restaurants and extended southern California friends, family, and food lovers. We came to practice regenerative agriculture and cultivate new way of thinking of our food. Our farm is open to you for events and celebrations of all kinds. - Навчання та стиль
I’m a city girl but even I can tell this is So smart
Excellent info - thanks - I get spent grain from a local brewery but never heard of the EM1 trick before this is a game-changer! So exciting!
How has this channel not exploded?!?!?
Absolutely awesome video and you are so skilled 🙏🏻🏆🥇
I love it
Awesome video
Great video! Continued success!

what is EM1?
Awesome video. So informative. We have a micro brewery that just opened and was curious about feeding this to our pigs.
Glad the video was helpful! We feed it to our pigs but they don’t love it. They’ll only eat it if there’s not other options. They prefer the compost from the restaurant and food scraps, so just a heads up if you decide to use it as feed for your pigs!
@@chefmollie5334 Thanks for the info. Do you dry the spent grain first b4 storage and addition of the EM1?
Love from #INDIA 🔥
I’m not sure how I came across your video; nothing else I’ve researched about spent grain has suggested adding EM. But I LOVE it. Thank you for the inspiration! We are aspiring homesteaders, and I want very much to make our own EM, as you have shown. I’m struggling to find more detailed information on how to keep it going without having to start all over after every fermentation. Based on the video and some of your responses to comments, it appears that your EM barrel is being perpetually fed, fermented and used, like a sourdough starter! If this is the case, how do you know when to add more molasses, and how much? Thank you!❤
When it gets down to about 30% or 25% we add more molasses and we had more water and then we don’t disturb it for a few days and then we continue to use
Am I able to add the EM1 when I pick up the grain? I just picked up my 1st load of grain last week. How long will this last in a barrel?
If you add the M1 soon as you get the barrel you should be able to have it lasted 10 to 12 maybe even 15 days
Can you make a video on all the details for making the em1 in the drum?
Yes, I can
Hello, very informative, Thank you, my question is, Does the brewers grain change the taste of the beef? We sell beef, and have just recently started getting brewers grain, but don’t know if I should use it to finish a steer, Thanks again!
It makes very delicious beef it’s all the joys of grain finish non of the pain
Thank you very for this info. In South India we do get Beer waste but the problem is preservation. I found my answer in your tips to use a barrel and EM solution which I also make. Very useful for me.
I’m so happy I could help
@@chefmollie5334 Thank you once again.
Solid contribution to the conversation. You could use a rice wash solution instead of em1 in your process of fermentation. Look up LAB Korean natural farming. Chris Trump or Drake have free content to show you the specifics. Then use the LAB to replace your em1 solution. That stuff is pretty expensive
Thank you for this
@@chefmollie5334 Thanks. Pls I wish to know the weight of the spent grain in one barrel. I would like to estimate the number of barrels to take one ton of spent grain.
Can we give it to pigs if yes then how much
Thanks for the video very insightful.
Please what’s the right proportions of usage for the EM -1 let’s say like 1 tonnage of spent grain how many grams, kilo or cup EM-1 would I use ?
Then secondly what’s the full EM 1 so I can be able to search for it and get it easily in my area.
Lastly, if I’m not able to put the EM 1 from the brewery company would it still be effective if I put it when it gets to my farm.
Thanks
Are use a cup A VM ones for a 55 gallon barrel and we use 2 1/2 cups for the totes
@@chefmollie5334 thanks
Can we give it to pigs if yes then how much
I've been reading about using enzymes to pre digest the spent grain to make it easier for the hens to get the proteins. Does the EM-1 do the same thing?
Yes, it does
👍👍
Great video! Does anyone know if the EM1 used is concentrate or is is diluted?? With regards to the (1/4 to 1 cup) mentioned in the video?
Concentrated
Great video thank you! How do you ensure that only 1 cup of EM1 reaches all the grain in a 55 gallon barrel
It just colonizes the whole thing
I'd be careful as they sometimes add antibiotics to kill mold. I stopped using it for that reason, even as a soil amendment.
I’m using green from my own brewery no anabiotic
Hi, new to your channel. Luckily for me i guess it came on my feed because I was trying to learn more about using spent grain for my vermicompost bins. My question is - first time also hearing of EM1 also, I don't have farm animals apart from my composting worms, 😊lol - should I add the EM1 if I'm using it for my worm bins? I'm thinking it would be beneficial to use depending on if I store any to further decompose before using it in my vermicompost bins! Any experiences on using it for compost?
Yes, you can add em1 to your Verma compost but it’s not necessary. Be careful too much spent grain can kill your worms. It gets too hot. You might want to compost Spent Grain with the Ian ones first or mix it in with some kind of carbon like straw or hay
Where do you get your em1. I have spent grain source and have storage problems.
The first time you can buy it even on Amazon and then you can make more
When making your own em1 what is the ratio of water em1 and molasses? Also how long do you wait before using it? When it's empty do you just add water again?
We start out with 2 gallons of PM12 gallons of molasses and from the very first time we also put 5 pounds of sugar and then fill up the rest of the 55 gallon drum with water almost to the top but enough room for aeration
We don’t continue to add sugar after it gets going just the molasses but the first time we want there to be lots of food
I picked up some fresh spent grain and put it in a 30 gal barrel with my own EM with equal parts brown sugar and enough water to dissolve, which made the grain wetter then I wanted. So my question is, Is there a chance the barrel will combusts? Worried all night of waking up to a huge, possibly dangerous mess?
I don’t think it will happen
@@chefmollie5334 All good so far. Excited to see end results. Do you dry ingredients after fermentation and how would you do that?
Hi im a farmer in nepal. Had a few questions. If i use EM1 then do i still have ro dry out the spent grain? Or do i use the EM1s aftee the spwnt grain is dried? Plz do help. Thank you
We do not dry out the grain We just inoculated with the EM one and keep it in a closed barrel
Could you give the method to keep for long time for using for animals feed? I storage not much times, it’s bad smells too
That’s what we use the EM1 forit will not smell bad
@@chefmollie5334 How can buy or make it EM1?
This is great. Are you feeding your layers anything other than the spent grain?
Yes, we feed the meet and Spent Grain the meat is off cuttings from the butcher
Do you mix it after you put em1 in?
We do not mix it we just pour the EM one on the top after it has come to room temperature
I was wondering whether I could do this with 5-gallon buckets?
Yes for sure
Can we feed this to broilers?? If it is so, how much can we feed per day per bird??
You can feed the same as any other grain. We used to feed our laying hens the layer mix but, now we only feed layer two days a week and we feed the spent grain the rest of the time. We’ve also fed it to cows, sheep, and goats. We personally don’t raise broilers but I’m sure that will help them gain fast because it’s 17% protein after boiling. Hope this helps!
Researching EM-1, it says; "In order to maintain the correct balance of micro-organisms, the concentrate can only be activated once" (?)
You only activate a small amount of the concentrate at a time. We buy the 5 gallon bag and then we put 2 cups in to 55 gallons of grain when it comes to room temperature.
But we’ve also gone through phases of making our own using the concentrate that we bought continuously aerating and adding more molasses as needed. Hope this helps!
@@chefmollie5334 Thank you.
Your grain looks really dry, I get grain, but it’s really wet. Do you dry it out?
No we do not dry it out, it’s wetter further you get down the barrel!
Thank you for the information. I have contracts with 4 breweries at this time. I have to use the totes due to the large quantity that I am getting. I have the problem with maggots after a couple of weeks. Would the EM1 alone help me to keep them out and preserve the grain?
The M1 will help the bacteria be safe for animals the maggots you have to keep the Flies out is the only way to keep the maggots out
@@chefmollie5334 Thank you would you mind sharing how you make your own EM1 please?
How much do you feed to the cows?
We start out with a small amount and introduce it little by little and get up to about a 5 gallon bucket for a cow per day
How much time can we stock this
3+ months
Mam Day one I put one cup EM 1 one gallon and how many days it take to use
You only need to put a couple of cups of the Ian one that green will not go bad it will just turn to the bokashi you just keep feeding it it to the the animals It should be good for at least two weeks maybe more
@@chefmollie5334 Thank you 🙂
What is the EM1?
Affective micro organisms
Can we give it to pigs if yes then how much
We give a couple of gallons per pig a day so we give 5 gallon bucket for three pigs but one is little
