Zamboanga 1984

Zamboanga city lies at the southern most western tip of Mindanao island, in the Filipino archipelago. My first time to Zamboanga was in 1984. On those fading days I had a Super-8 m/m movie camera. The sequences shown on the video are only a bit portion of the total I'd recorded in the city. Few days ago, by chance, I discovered a videotape loaded with those funny frames. Unfortunately in the tape there were no more images. I plugged the tape into the video player to make a copy of them using my cam corder. The images seen on the video were taken from the screen of my television. Not so good quality, that's right. But I think above the quality lies the interest of the sequences shooted 25 years ago. Probably the city has changed a lot from then. The city and the habits of zamboangueños. Enjoy watching the funny way the Scouts control the motorized traffic in the busy streets of Zamboanga. The jazz music wich comes along with the images is quite old. "Lingerie Jazz" is played by Demon's Jazz Orquestra. A Catalan jazz band from the decade of 1930s. The music was recorded in the city of Barcelona (Catalonia) in 1932. /--------/
La ciutat de Zamboanga està ubicada al sud-oest de Mindanao, la segona illa més gran de l'arxipèlag filipí. Vaig visitar per primera vegada Zamboanga l'any 1984. Aquell any, amb una càmera de Super-8 m/m vaig gravar les seqüències que mostren el vídeo. Vaig filmar moltes més imatges, és clar. La llàstima és que de moment solament he trobat aquestes. Les he localitzat per pura casualitat. Resulta que l'any 1990 vaig enviar la pel·lícula al programa de TV3 Betes i Films. Un cop utilitzades, l'administració del programa va enviar-me la cinta de vídeo gravada amb la pel·lícula de Super-8. Gràcies a això les he pogut extreure. Vaig copiar-les ara fa uns dies. Per poder-ho fer vaig fixar la càmera fotogràfica compacte ja se sap que aquestes petites meravelles també graven vídeo en un trípode. Vaig posar la cinta dins el reproductor de vídeo i vaig fer la gravació. El resultat no és òptim, prou que es veu. La qualitat de les imatges és més aviat escassa, però la pàtina de velles que els donen les transferències i el seu valor documental penso que les salva. A parer meu, el més interessant són les seqüències del control del trànsit dirigit per una colla d'Escoltes. La música de jazz que acompanya el vídeo és extreta del disc original que l'any 1932 va gravar, a Barcelona, la banda catalana Orquestra Demon's Jazz. La peça es diu "Lingerie Jazz", com s'especifica als crèdits finals del vídeo. Confio que almenys us diverteixi.

From the u.s. but I lived in Zamboanga in 83 84 .Know it lived it.Was 23 and hit every night club .The Sultana hotel,The Lantaka.Used to love a little club buy the Coca Cola factory. Run by a japanese guy named mister Ito.Lots of pretty girls everywhere in my beloved Zamboanga city.I miss her.

I also had the chance to manage the traffic when I was a girl scout in the mid 80s under the supervision of Sir Estipona. It was fun!

im a local and yes i was born the year this vid was taken. sir if i may request, that you could please post the rest of your collection of videos of our city, because the old memory of the city is fast disappearing. Im really saddened that even the buildings in your video, only a handful now are standing. I hope you find it in your time to post them. thank you so much.
