ok i done some searching on the web and they are indeed boys in the game and they address this in some special answer and question episode in some dvd set or w/e Still thou that was only released after so many people bitched about the difference. i beleive they didnt want to throw to much side storys into the anime so they left their past be. if you look at 0:30 thats quite a girlish face. this leads me to beleive that their trying to make us assume there girls.

i'm 10 years late but lemme clarify, when they refer to the human race they use "Ningen (Japanese: 人間)" or "人類 (Jinrui)" which is humankind. When they refer to one another they use "他人 (ひと) (hito)" which means person, so Hakuoro isn't calling him human he's just saying that a person can't die that easily, and "person" has a broad meaning, if that makes sense.
