you should also check the vehicle build plate. the axle code for locking diffs is K294.
also the diff lock mechanisms stick out like dogs balls on the diff centers. the flashing lights are driven by the diff ecu, unlikely that the vehicle will have the ecu and not have locker but it could happen. the flashing lights signify that the engage command is being sent to the diff lock but until the lights are on solid the diff is not locked.
Also crank the wheel hard to the right and pull forward. If it sounds like you're running over a dog you have lockers.
thanks Mr Brave Auto, I fully understand and appreciate your effort to alert the punters. good man.
It's not hard to look at the axel and see if there is an actuator on the differential. I have an 80 series here in the us with lockers.
Thank you for busting this one !
A quick glance at the pumpkins underneath etc diff centres you can see the external looks like a electric window motor on the front of the diff housings easy way to check if they're really there
You just need to have a pictures of the S/N tag and it'll tell you if so. No need to try out the switch only.
Golden advice!
Okay?
I think mine only has centre diff lock. Mine is 1992 turbo diesel. Ahwell Harrop Eaton it is.
Mine comes with it too in my Nissan Frontier pro4x
Can you still get 80 series into Australia?
Thanks for the tip
I would like buy land cruiser 1996 is there diff locks in land cruiser 1996?
Mines got a big button button there. About 20-25mm diameter. But there's no actuator on the front diff which is a giveaway. I think this may have something to do with the many variants of the vehicle when new. Mine has a rear LSD, which I think was the norm in 1997. No front locker - bummer. But I often wonder if the LSD rear hub would fit in the front diff.. and if you could steer after...
If it lights up on the dash, what that means is that you have a light on the dash.
When you turn the lockers on the light should keep flashing until you move the car forward which engages the lockers completely then the light will stop flashing.
Tested that today. I was a little confused at first. I thought it disengaged :P
When you activate the lockers, besides the light indicator, you will notice like a mechanical sound that something is engaging.mine is 96 lc
It locks them so no one can steal them. Always lock them if you're in a sketchy part of town.
If they changed out the Toyota badge and slap a Ford badge on can you tell?
it happened to me once.. the vehicle had the switch but it didn't have lockers
New they will just wire up the lights on the dash to the switch. The best way is to jack up one side and test if the vehicle will roll off the jack at idle. Or jack up the whole vehicle, lock the axles and try to spin the wheels, if both sides turn the same way, the lockers work.
Ok
Can you export this land cruiser to Pakistan?? Do tell me im ready to buy this. Waiting for your reply.
thanks for the information. I have a question; Does LC LJ70 have diff lock or doesn't ? or is it an option when you buy the vehicule.
Lj 78 sometimes have rear only lock... if the lj70 has disk brake rear axle or it being a 71 slight chance but real rare and be very lucky to come across one! Not saying they don't but if it has drum rear then I'd say no..
ooooh been there last year
Could have summed this up in 30 seconds mate
You can't do anything to the auctions even if they mention lockers and it doesn't have.
That's actually a poor way to tell if you have lockers. FIRST...look on the door tag and see if it has axle code (294) meaning it left the factory with factory locking diffs. ANYTHING could have happened between then (20+ years ago) and now. Aftermarket electric lockers can be installed in an 80 series and the factory dial/switch used to operate them (just takes some wiring and relays). A rear full time locker (Aussie, Lock-right, etc) could be in the rear diff and an aftermarket selectable up front, using the factory switch to activate it. IF you want to be sure the vehicle has selectable locker(s) in either axle you MUST go under the vehicle and look at the diff itself. The factory set up uses an electric motor to engage a fork in the diff. Aftermarket units (electric) will have wiring going directly into the diff housing.
Lights on the dash mean little if someone has opened up the ;lockers and failed to put them back together properly. The light will show them engaged but they aren't. This also holds true for the 4WD front axle engagement, if the mechanic did not put the diff and locker together properly, the cog will slide and indicate engagement, but it has not. You need someone to check the action of the wheels while you move the truck.
There is actually a better way to check if it has lockers from the VIN sticker.
what if someone took them out? it literally takes under 10 seconds to look under the truck at the diffs
just having the locker lights flashing doesn't mean they work. the light must stop flashing when the lockers are fully engaged. problem with the 80 series lockers is, most servo locker motors are at least seized at their age. the switch is in, the lights flash, there are lockers on the axle, but they don't engage. so it's basically without lockers. I had one like that. the locker servo motors were seized even when 10 years old. it took a lot of work to make the lockers engage again.
Point of this video is that Japanese car yards / exporters are fitting this diff lock switch to scam customers into paying more for these vehicles as it is an expensive and desirable feature to have. If the lockers are there but are seized then that is another story, anything that moves can seize.
I thought only the Saharas had lockers? If I saw a GXL etc with the lockers switch I'd be suspicious as I know they didn't come out with them.
All UK-spec 80 Series models, whether it's a GX or VX come standard with axle diff-locks. Strangely, all UK-spec 24 Valve diesels were manuals, but 12 Valve's came in manual and automatic. In all other ways the VX's were fully-specced. Our GX is similar to your GXL and our VX is like a fully loaded Sahara. All 1997 cars were badged Amazon VX.
Beej O'Dwyer this is not true all gxl utes or cab chassis come with factory lockers standard also factory lockers have been a factory option on all models so to see them would not be suspicious at all
Why won't they check. It's on the vehicle anyway it should be part of the inspection.
You dont know how to use it?
Okay.
how many have you come across that have had the fake switch?
I've seen a few in America that came like that, don't know why. I check the information placard in the door jamb. The axle code should be K294 for a vehicle with locking differentials, while it would be K292 for open differentials.
Fush end chups eh bro? Chick uff it his lockers cuz.
Kiwi?
10K Yin
cool
My 2017 lc doesn’t have that switch
yu zhang is it a base model? Because base models dont have any thing on them
Hey Mate How many people have ever won a case against an auction house Not hard to explain Caveat emptor is Latin for "Let the buyer beware". It has become a proverb in English. Generally, caveat emptor is the contract law principle that controls the sale of real property after the date of closing , im not been a smart ass , but generally its if you make a mistake when buying at an auction its suck it up big boy and run on I respect that you are or look like a professional buyer , but the ordinary punter its well you may be lucky
ok
In the Arab world we call this car model abo hajar which means rock daddy 😂
First, use your Google machine to learn what to look for, "a Locker engagement unit on the differential". Second, Get under the vehicle and look for your self !
Open the diff housing to look for lockers? With vacum lockers it looks the same on the outside, with ARB i have no idea
When you turn the lockers on the light should keep flashing until you move the car forward which engages the lockers completely then the light will stop flashing.
On the LC 80 you can see if it has lockers or no just by lookin under the car, you will see the actuators near each of the differential housings( rear and front). It's electrical on the LCs 80s series, that's why you can see ir)
If your caught doing that you should be fed that switch washed down with used engine oil . Fair trade
Mark, on the frame plate under the bonnet look at the Axle code. if it ends in "5" it will have lockers as well. Easy enough to tell if they are on the axles by looking by the diff on the drivers side (RHD). Cheeky bastards.
Thanks for the info but the video was more to advise people not to simply rely on seeing the "locker" switch in the auction photos.
OK x 17
Pretty stupid statement considering you are just reviewing japanese spec cars only!! the Australian sped landcruiser VDJ79 ute's etc have twin lockers as standard.
you repeated the same info twice. all you have to do is run a vin check for factory intstalled options. buying a car unseen in person is gotta be one of the dumbest things you can do.
Pretty astute lel
#loophole
I don’t have this locker in my land cruiser
I luv the way Zealunders say "druft". Especially Maori chicks of course..
Mintion LOL
take 2 seconds, get on one knee and physically see if the lockers are under the truck. That's the only way to truly know
3:46 minutes of video about something that you can explain in 11 seconds 🙄. Just say: “be careful. Unscrupulous sellers put the lockers switch on the dash in vehicles that don’t have lockers”. Baaaam. Said!
Just another reason to buy something other than a crappy toyota
Chris K crappie lmfaooo this thing is one of the most reliable suv you can buy
Says the guy that has been left behind by other people in Toyota's .
Ok
Ok
Great work as always Mark!
Thanks mate, most people seem to be missing the main point of this video which is do not rely on the vehicle really having lockers via the auction photos.
Brave Auto International Japan - JDM Auction Agent ua-cam.com/video/16mQFEM4YOM/v-deo.html if you dont have a dif lock in your car watch this :D
