Dark Fog invasions gain XP for doing damage, so if you want to level them up quickly, you want to tone down the turrets and improve your repair facilities. That way, you will have very few enemy drones attacking, but they will be loaded with high-tier loot, which is something you care about more than a lot of low-tier crap.
They also gain xp when taking damage. He should have built closer to the hive and completely surrounded it so it would attack the flying units that wander around triggering attacks inbetween waves and increasing the threat to make waves come faster.
@@rekrn12345he said why he wasn't doing that in the video. Going on the offensive increases threat from the space hive, which he can't defend well right now. Only defending actual attacks prevents that
Been doing a similar run on a pretty rough seed. Forced to farm the fog on my home planet too for the titanium unless I want to spend 3 hours flying to another star. I love this but, honestly, I would have loved a video of infrastructure building. I would have liked to see you build the sorting system and the BUS from scratch. Keep it up! Great content!
2:30 Putting a logistics hat on the chests will allow you to collect the entire stack of chests onto your cursor in one go by clicking on the hat. Also let's you place the entire stack on the target planet.
I spent 4 REAL hours cruising at 1000m/s (before warp tech) to the nearest G star 2LY away to collect 6K+ organic crystals for the yellow science to get me scienced up to the warpers. Thanks for the infinite storage in the right hand trick :D
I wish the logistic drone hats pulled to your inventory. Like if you lack items to build a smelter or something, it should grab the materials for you. That would be a nice addition. Maybe you can even have a drone inventory that goes to get them.
I find it extremely annoying that the logistic "hats" don't automatically connect with logistic stations. Considering how short the timespan between unlocking the hats and the stations actually is, it's a lot of effort (first setting up the hats, producing them and the drones, then later connecting them with the proper logistic stations) for little reward. I personally prefer planning my base so I don't need them as much. Also, their range is abyssmal - and you can't even build connector stations in between, because their settings are so limited.
I think their biggest strength is providing you with items when you're in range. I just have them deliver items to me what i frequently use (belts, smelters, storage, ...). It's also nice to have them fly proliferate around the planet without taking up a spot in your logistics towers
@@DJTimeLock Yeah, I don't know. When I need to grab 1200 belts or 600 inserters, the little drones just aren't doing it. And like I said, the range is so short that you're pretty much back at your market anyway.

Experience for Dark Fog bases is based on the damage against the units as they're killed. So if a biter has 10 HP and you kill it with a 12 damage attack, there's not a lot of experience applied. Meanwhile, if you used a 100 damage attack, that's a huge amount of extra XP. So you should use the highest output damage weapon possible. Implosion Cannons are great for this.
@@vrnvorona depends on if the ROI is worth it in farmed materials versus expended. Implosion has AOE splash damage, so it also kills faster with fewer shots.
I ended up becoming "stuck" farming four bases on my home planet and unlocked most of the tech before being able to mine Titanium directly. The bases were too high a level to destroy and more of my attention and resources were focused on defending. The amount of Titanium and Titanium Crystals dropped on the home planet are paltry to sustain yellow science, much less the other technology that's unlocked on the way. It's supplimental at best. The drop rates for most other resources are much better, even the higher end versions.
The way I'm farming my high end hive I'd really like sorters with an inverted-filter option. A filter which identifies the one item they won't carry -- so everything else gets output onto the belt except one item that stays in that command center with the matching logistics distributor atop its storage. (Which really just means I need to redo my design to better work with the options we have -- I just don't want to tear down and restructure the farming infrastructure around a currently level 30 planetary base. So I'm living with the hack job I've got)
You could always use a splitter, or better yet, have a main belt output and have containers from both sides of the belt then set your sorters which item you want the container for. Pretty much what I do since I get lazy doing it with splitters.
Im up to producing purple science steadily and my base is absolute spaghetti. Even with IPLS and PLS. The fact that you not only have the patience but the time to neatly layout a fantastic looking main bus is frankly beyond my comprehension.
There is a theory that overdamage gives the dark fog more XP. Lasers do not do overdamage. Would be interesting to see you go back to earlier save and replace the lasers with cannons and see if the dark fog levels faster.
Hey @Nilaus, is this episode still based on the pre-rebalance version? I heard that with a planetary shield, planet invasions become a thing of the past. Can you confirm if that's the case in your content?
I wonder if abusing signal tower attraction would be a good strategy for taking out that beast of a planet. For example you could have one extremely strong base on the north pole with your only signal towers on the planet who's job is to take all the incoming attacks. Then starting from the south pole you clear bases without using any signal towers.
If you want to level up and farm the Dark Fog, you can use the Implosion cannons. Those cannons really increase the exp the Dark Fog base gets. Once the Dark Fog bases are at the level you want them to be at, you can switch back to Laser turrets
Great episode Nilaus! I was wondering what a good DF farming setup would look like, and what the "rules" were for placement of signal towers and other things. Nice setup! Thanks for this!
When you added material to the bus using the boxes they weren't proliferated.. perhaps having a proliferation machine to the beginning of your sorter would give everything a production bonus on the way in..? Just an idea I think is great...
Thats why the new patch is good, for a farm build you only need one or for safety maybe 2 signal towers in the same location and have a shield to prevent any further bases, then missile defense for that is no longer needed and after all missile launchers are gone and replaced with plasma cannons you wont waste missiles on defense either. And yeah it takes alot of space to do that, a dedicated planet with multiple bases attacking is better. Edit: I wanted to add that you can now clearly see what these towers are doing and what went wrong on stream putting so many of them down while attacking. All waves always came to you instead of your base, thats why so many got destroyed. Once most of the waves ar eon the way to your base you can simply push with guns and BABs and NO signal towers, and only put a tower down very shortly to launch a missile barrage. Its a bit cheesy but that way you don't loose any hair.
Best way is to clear out your home plannet but don't kill the base at the 2nd planet, use 2nd planet as a farm till your are have all the necessary components for interstellar hub and scaling.
i understood something. You don't need to put signal towers all over the planet, it's enough to put a few on opposite sides of the planet and set all missile turrets to high priority on everything.
An interesting fact that I did not know, the splitters can not take 2 filters. This increases the size for my idea of an optimal filter ring by 28 more main splitters but everything else stays the same, and you now have an optional input port at each of the 57 main line splitters for BAB loot belts. So for an all fog drop farm filter it would be a ring/loop of 57 belted splitters with the interior/pole output side filtered into the splitter/depot(s)/DLS combo building and the exterior/equatorial side open for BAB input belts. 114 splitters, 57 depots( or a multiple thereof), 57 DLS along with 3 stackers and a proliferator per each BAB input line injected into the ring. I've been watching another person who setup filters directly into multiple BABs and PLS towers( 2 BABs per 3 towers), knowing their pickup ranges will mostly overlap, and look forward to seeing how their final version is designed. It seems an optimal build would be a modular configuration of 2 BABs( set to priority repair), 2 wireless power, 3 PLS and 18 laser towers( as each BAB has 12 construction drones). The tightest configuration with those parameters would have all buildings being repairs with a dedicated drone, protected by dedicated lasers and 8 dedicated items exported by PLS( plus 2 more if using large depot and DLS atop each BAB). 6 of these builds around a base and you would be farming and collecting all 57 items, as I expect the max swarm of 180 split into 6 directions, 30 per side would easily be handled by 18 laser towers that have total coverage from dedicated repair drones. Next would be to figure out the power consumption of such a farm, choose a method to supply such power, and add in the factories and demand sides of those DLS/PLS to keep the BABs from filling up.
It would be more easy and faster to make an outpost for mining titanium. Without ISL it will be destroyed when ammo or fuel depleted, but with miners you will get enough titanium pretty fast. Implosion + rockets can effectively survive with 20+ bases.
@@Nilaus i played only on max difficulty. I just described my experience. I did it with 1 tir ammo. Farming with lasers means you need to build the laser turrets at the edge of the planetary base structure, surround it on all 4 sides and place signal towers behind the lasers.
