I watched this video a couple of times before going to collect my first ever kayak. I’m 73 and have still never paddled one. Anyway, this method worked perfectly. Congrats for your confidence-inspiring presentation. I’ll be taking to the water in the next day or two.
Straight forward. No need to get expensive (or inexpensive) kayak transport systems/attachments… two straps with retention buckle. And ready to roll. Thanks sir.
Whats to stop the kayak being forced backward ? The front strap is fitted over the narrow end so it wont slide forward when braking. As the car reaches 60 mph with any head wind it will be driven down onto the rack giving the straps some slack and there is little to stop it slipping. A third strap is needed and fed through any handle on the kayak or do this with the back strap. I would personally use some protection between rail and kayak such as pipe insulation. Juan- for longer kayaks cradles are more secure and use full length of roof rails so you have less overhang that can cause problems. Some tie front/back of kayak to front and rear tow points to add security. Always stop after the first ten minutes of driving to check tensions.
The way you have done this would mean the kayak has a chance of working loose. The straps went under the bars at and around the post at an angle, as the kayak moves over time it will be pulled towards the centre of the roof due to the sideways pull on the straps. To avoid this, place the kayak further towards the middle of the roof so the straps are directly down and not in or out as this would make the straps longer and this is what results in the straps working loose. Kind of you to do the video though.
Damo666 sometimes it’s worth a strap over the front/bow that you can attach to both wheel arches. Gives you that added security and peace of mind when you are driving along that the bow won’t ride up at speed. Which in all honesty it shouldn’t do with decent standard cam straps. Also there’s no need to drive like a lunatic to build up stupid speeds 👍🏻😂
I transport my sons this way. I tie a rope from the front to the bars and with the back as well. Touch wood it never moves. My husband invested in Thule kayak carriers, waste of money..nearly lost the kayak. Thule customer service would not have any of it.
In the UK the overhang rules are very generous www.gov.uk/government/publications/overhanging-loads-on-vehicles/overhanging-loads as long as the kayak is securely attached to the roof you should be fine.
thanks for instruction. could you please advise the weight of this kayak? I was wondering how easy is to lift a 25 to 30 kg kayak for an average person?
Glad it was helpful! The kayak shown in the video is the Tootega Pulse 85 Hydrolite - www.aswatersports.co.uk/shop/kayaks/sit-on/tootega-pulse-85-hydrolite.html at 14kg it is the lightest kayak we sell. It depends in your physical ability, but we would say around 25kg would be the maximum for one person to lift. It also depends on the shape of the boat, and the height of the car! There are loading systems to make this easier, we have some options here: www.aswatersports.co.uk/shop/accessories/storage-travel/roof-rack-accessories.html
I make no appologies for this but that was one shit up load from those that sell these things no voice no real description NOTHING For those watching this if you really want to know how its done just go and watch an American or Canadian up load then you will be safe !!
WHY NOT SPEND A FEW MORE PENNIES AND GET PROPER KAYAK L BRACKETS ITS NEVER SAFE TO TRANSPORT A KAYAK FLAT IS IT ??? F1 CARS SPEND MILLIONS ON WIND TUNNELS SO GET IT ON ITS SIDE USE FRON AND REAR TIES AND YOU ARE SAFE TO GO !!

I agree, this is by far the best and easiest and clearest tutorial video for this task. Thank you, so helpful! Kayaker from Vermont, USA.
You're very welcome!

I must thankyou for your excellent and clear video instructions. Worked 100% tying down 2 kayaks. No BS or irrelevant talking which I appreciate.
Absolutely best tutorial for how to tie a kayak. it is a shame that I am away from you guys and can not support your business.

Thank you stilt, I went with your suggestions
I drove 500 miles to Scotland with my Kayak attached to the car exactly as shown in the video and it didn't move at all.
Is it really safe? I’ve never done it because I’m scared it will fall off if I break 😢
Thank you! It was super easy and simple to understand and kept my kayak on tight!
Best explanation on youtube… thank you.
So helpful and simple. thank you!
Wow very simple! Thanks bud!

A must try seems easy enough 😉
Hi! Great Video, Would you add extra security for Longer Kayaks?

Brilliant that helped me alot thanks very much 👍 😀
so simple! thank you
What size cam straps would you recommend?
I've just put 2.5m on and they're slightly too short
I did this but just curious what keeps kayak from not moving forward or back when driving on highway? Can it slide out under the straps?

@@dianepitt5342 Do your sons get windblown and chilled in the wind? :)
@@bobalessio6339 not sure what you mean.
easy to say, when you don’t have a Vauxhall Corsa😭😭😭😭am super concerned about the overhang🤣❤️

@@aswatersports yeah absolutely, i triple strapped it and it was solid, thanks for the info🥰🥰❤️
Does this eliminate the wind noise too
I have to say I saved the 25s silent video to my phone so i can refer it later
Thanks a lot!!
thanks for instruction.

@@aswatersports Thanks very much
Thanks for the video :)
What do you do with the bits of straps hanging over please?
Tie a half-hitch, around and through itself until you've taken up the slack
How about 2 kayaks? Please help.
My kayak distorts where it rests on the cross bars. I bought some foam supports but it didn't seem to make a difference.
What length are these cam straps?
What about 2x 15ft kayaks??
You would need J hooks for those and lie them on their sides
@@haleymarie6546 I've bought a pair of upright bars.
brilliant - thank you
