  • For this tutorial, I chose a great streamer that is known to catch large fish. Using a barbless jig nymph hook from Allen Fly Fishing (www.allenflyfishing.com/), I varied the colors of John Barr's original slightly to create this "Meat Whistle."
Thanks for viewing this UA-cam fly tying tutorial, and I encourage you to view my additional videos at the following website: www.troutandfeather.com

Thanks, Podobed, and I know what you mean regarding the proportions. The Allen hook is a short-shanked jig hook, thus the reason the pattern seems condensed. With that said, I have had no problems hooking fish on this, and continue to fish it frequently. The marabou suggestion is great; thanks for the idea and your kind comments! TC

Oh, I see what you mean. I prefer to tie off prior than the bead (or in this case, cone). Personally, there is nothing wrong with tying over a bead or cone, though the originator of this pattern ties it off prior to the cone (hence why I chose to do so, too). Thanks for clarifying that for me!

Thanks, as always, for the comment. I really enjoy making these videos and hope that my knowledge will help others. Occasionally, I will double a fly already tied on UA-cam, but I will attempt to vary the pattern, add information, or simply give a more in-depth and detailed tutorial. This video is 30 minutes; crazy! I wanted to be thorough, more for those who are unfamiliar with some of the techniques in here. Thanks again!

First- great video, great discussion. I also like this pattern. It seems like the proportions are slightly off though. I think that was because of the hook choice. I love Allen Fly fishing hooks, but that jig hook doesn't have a 90 degree bend and it is a shorter shank than the more commonly used Gama. It is also a much smaller hook than the materials dictate, an effort in your part to downscale the pattern no doubt. Great instruction overall, just seems compressed.

great job, I tie a version on an eagle claw 413 #1 without the flash, marabou on the bottom only and a strung saddle for the shoulders. It's not really a meat whistle but it works and it's a quick wrap.

also- with the marabou- you may finish this fly much neater, and a bit easier if you tied 1-2 pieces in by the tips, and then palmered the marabou . it eliminates the bulk towards the head. just something i've come across that i think is useful. love your videos, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments, Redshaftedflicker. I'd love to tie a version of your pattern, with your permission. It sounds a lot easier, for sure. Do you use any weight at all? Anything else similar/different? Thanks...TC

Thx for your kind words, this really isn't my pattern, just a bastardized version of the killer original. Same setup with the conehead, but with marabou only for the belly, sililegs, two per side one on top is shorter than the bottom and a webby strung saddle or a schlappen for the collar, that's it. tight lines!!

Thanks for the question, Sean; I tied this zonker strip shorter based on the length of the hook shank. The longer the shank, the longer the tail; the body is then finished as the video shows. I'm unsure what you mean by me not tying it in @ the front; the zonker actually gets locked in at the front, and then ribbed to complete everything. Does that make sense? I'm really sorry to hear that no one will teach you! Is there a local Trout Unlimited in your area? I would start there; good luck!

Tim, I thought when you brought the rabbit zonker over the top you were going to tie it there. What is the purpose for making the zonker so short if it is not going to be tied in at the front? I am just wondering because on most patterns I use zonkers in I leave them longer. Usually I tie a foul guard on too. Believe it or not, I do not fish most of the flies I tie. Unless it can be converted to a spinner pattern. I am a large man with a handicap and I can't find someone to teach me fly fishing.

Good video, I like how you don't ever tie the exact same fly someone else as already made a video for. They are not at quite the level of a video from say tightlinevideo, but the in-depth background knowledge makes up for it. One thing I will say is that this is very long and I don't think I could make it all the way through....anyway nice job

At the end of the video, you brought the rabbit strip forward to the eye of the hook, (I thought you might tie it in at the eye) but you trimmed it at the eye. I just wondered why you did that? The length of the tail looked good before you cut it, and I could hardly see it after. So I asked you why you brought it forward as if you were going to tie it in and then trimmed it shorter and let it go back to the original position. Just curiousity is all. All the best, Sean

Thanks for the information; I'd love to see if a picture of it sometime, thus feel free to email me (my address is listed on every video and in the description). Thanks again! TC

Thanks, Jerrod, and this fly is more complex than many. Have you ever tied simple zonkers, especially with lead eyes? They are a little more user-friendly, plus very effective! I appreciate the comments related to my videos... TC
