Perfectly said. Steve Marriott, Roger Daltrey, Paul McCartney/John Lennon, Ray Davies, Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Morrissey are the singers I recognize immediately. I’m sure I’m leaving out a few names but those are the big ones. Especially Morrissey, Daltrey, and Plant.
With a lot of early Smiths songs Morrissey's main vocal melodies are almost like harmony melodies, he doesn't hit any notes hard, just kind of floats around Johnny Marr's guitar -- it was what intrigued me about the band from day one. His melodies got tighter by the time of 'The Queen is Dead' and beyond, but I have a fondness for the early Smiths records. I remember I had a Greek friend whose father (who hated pop music) really liked the Smiths because Morrissey's vocals reminded him of Greek music. That was interesting.
I don't know much about Greek music except from Church music, Greek Orthodox chant. What I can say about Greek chant is that it is a lot more flowy, fluid, and vibrato based than the music of the Western churches. So I can see why Morrissey's singing is "Greek" in that sense. It's not so much about hitting one definite pitch after another as gliding smoothly up and down the scale.
@@waltercoyle6393 Look up glissando up staccato. Glissando means gliding from one note to the other. Staccato means you're picking out one note after the other with little transition. Morrissey's style is very glissando, gliding.
Morrissey has one of the most distinctive voices of all time and he sings with emotion and charisma, to me that is more important than technical prowess. Having said that, you should listen to his more recent work. His vocal capabilities have dramatically improved over time, his 2019 covers album, "California Son" is a great showcase for this.
A friend of mine once said his favorite thing about Morrissey was that he never stopped singing. He would harmonize through the whole song. It changed the way I listened to his music.
I believe I heard that he had to lip-sync in this video. Morrissey wanted to sing live, but the TV program wanted him to just hold a mic and act as if he was singing live. He refused to use a mic, instead he hold those flowers, to show it's not actually live.
I love Morrissey! I've listened to him for 37 years almost exclusively. I've seen him live 3 times, once in a venue so small I was able to touch his shoes, hold his hand, and look right into his eyes. I was right against the stage. One of the best nights of my life!
This is Johnny Marr's best ever riff imho. An absolute ear worm of a riff, referring to one of Beth's most informative videos. Thank you for reminding people of one of the most influential writing duos of the 80s
Always thought the best thing about Morisseys singing was the “delivery” of the vocal…loved it intertwined with the lyrics, marrs jangley riffs…they sound like no one else
Listening to Morissey/The Smiths reminds me of my beloved mom who left us 5 years ago...everytime I listen to these songs I get emotional and I get immediately taken to my 90's days when my brothers, my beloved mom and I were sitting around the stereo enjoying these songs. Thanks for this reaction.
To actually see Morrissey sing live in the 80s, you'd have to go for something like The Tube (not TOTP) - there's an awesome 7 minute version of Barbarism begins at home which has to be seen (and heard) to be believed.
I truly love The Smiths and especially Morrissey. I saw them in their heyday and Morrissey when he went out on his own. I've always loved his voice and the music is totally unique. He is gorgeous too. There are so many things about Morrissey that people misconstrue, and I have always laughed when people have said that he doesn't have a sense of humour - complete and utter nonsense. In the 80's, I used to listen to BBC Radio in my bedroom, and Morrissey was often a guest in the evenings, and things he said made me scream with laughter. Sometimes my mum would ask me what was making me laugh, and I said, "Morrissey"!!! She looked at me in bewilderment!!! He is actually a very funny man with a laid back sense of humour. He is 7 months older than me, and I love him.
How soon is now is definitely one of the most hypnotic songs I’ve ever listened too! I remember dancing to this song at prom and just being in my own headspace even though I was dancing with my prom date! She loved it too!
"Handsome Devil" - one of my favorite songs, saw it in a skating video when I was 11 "Flip: Really Sorry." "Well I wonder" I think would have been perfect to review!!
💜 Hello! I just have a few thoughts... Morrissey has a very prominent underbite, but I can see what Beth means about jaw soreness. Morrissey has my absolute FAVORITE male singing voice of all time,& the lyrics he writes can be extremely moving, eloquent, intelligent, &sometimes even hilarious! I’m not exaggerating when I say that I still get goosebumps when I hear certain songs, even though I’ve heard them thousands of times! I LOVE this song, however I really wish Beth picked a different song so that she could’ve heard his impressive vocal range &his powerful vocals....Maybe something like- “I know it’s over”-The Smiths, or a later Morrissey song like, “Come back to Camden”, IDK. One more thing that I think might impress Beth is that when Morrissey performs, he doesn’t use wedges or in-ears. He doesn’t wear any earpieces at all, yet his live voice sounds perfect! Unlike a LOT of singers, his voice live sounds just as good as it does on his records! 💜💛🤎🤍🧡
Morrissey's solo career »» The Smiths 🤷🏻♂️ His voice improved over time, his expression range definitely grew; he doesn't have to do much to express what he wants anyway. Listen to "Boxers", "I know it's gonna happen someday", "Now my heart is full", "I'm ok by myself". He really knocks it out of the ballpark.
I’ll agree that Moz was better on his solo material, but knowing his personality that doesn’t seem surprising LOL. However, looking at the entirety of the work as a whole, The Smiths music clearly wins out. It’s art, so it’s completely subjective anyway, but the great majority would agree.
Seeing these old Smiths video remind me of my older brother as a teenager. He'd get me to look for old mens shirts at church jumble sales he was too cool to go to. I'd get to spend the change on toys or mushy peas and vinegar. In the spirit of nostalgia I've been watching some old INXS live videos and had a look to see what you might have said about Michael Hutchences voice and low and behold imagine my surprise when i found nowt.
THANK YOU for doing a Morrissey video! I’d very much be interested in a comparison of his voice between his early and his later years! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET ME GET WHAT I WANT! 😉
Attended his show in Boston a significant number of years back. He lost his voice three songs in and walked off the stage. Of course everyone was disappointed. Instead of refunding tickets, he and the band came back a few weeks later dressed up in white tuxedoes and banged out a ton of Smiths hits (instead of his solo work)--the crowd was going positively nuts. Absolute gent.
Great voice. See if you can find some video of recent performances. I just saw him at Riot Fest and his voice is amazing. Probably more range than in this video.
wow, i was a college theatre major and took a lot of vocal classes along with acting and such...jaw tension was a huge issue for me after awhile and none of my teachers over 4 years were able to notice or treat it, and I was primarily an actor not a singer so i didn't know any better - i just thought singing always hurt my mouth/ jaw after awhile. So impressive you recognize this instantly. I wish we had a teacher like you in my BFA program.
Yes it was a big criticism for those wanting to knock the Smiths in the 80s that Mozza could only sing 4 notes. But as will all great bands the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
I love singers I can recognise from a single note. Morrisey is one of them.
yes he has a recognizable voice
Robert Smith among them i think
Yeah because most of the time he sings the third note above the root lol (he still does it well though)
It’s because he sings one note throughout every song 🤣🤣🤣
Perfectly said. Steve Marriott, Roger Daltrey, Paul McCartney/John Lennon, Ray Davies, Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Morrissey are the singers I recognize immediately. I’m sure I’m leaving out a few names but those are the big ones. Especially Morrissey, Daltrey, and Plant.

Every word Morrissey sings hits a note hard.

Morrissey wanted to sing live, but the TV program wanted him to just hold a mic and act as if he was singing live.
He refused to use a mic, instead he hold those flowers, to show it's not actually live.
Yes, this is not live.
Top of the pops and a lot of shows at the time did this. Some people rebelled in the late 80s and 90s and/or took the piss by doing dumb stuff.
Sounds about right. Morrissey was (quite rightly imo) proud of his vocal ability.
Yeah, New Order absolutely refused to do the shows unless they got to perform live, even on TOTP they did Blue Monday live, I think.
@@noverrr4508 Yeah The Cure would have a blast with shows where you had to mime, having people switch instruments etc, all over the place.

The bass is everything for their music. One of great bassist
Says the bass player? Ignore the unique voice, lyrics, stellar guitar and think the bass is "everything"?
The symmetry and chemistry between Marr's musical ideas and Morrissey's instinctive vocal techniques and words was as unique as it was breath-taking.
Two true geniuses! W
We’ll never see the likes again
Chills. Every time. So unique. Words come out of his mouth, but he sings from the heart 🖤❤️

Marr’s riff in ‘Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others” is my personal favourite from him..

For me it's the end of Pretty Girls Make Graves. Incredibly haunting and beautiful.
I love him in The Draize Train.
Got to be how soon is now or headmasters ritual.
he has a good voice it's unique.
My daughter and I saw him in Vegas back in August. He still nails it!
Absolutely 💯
Morrissey is one of the few that sound good live in concert. Hand down top 10 of all time for me
I adorrrrrre Morrissey's voice. So dreamy.
Always thought the best thing about Morisseys singing was the “delivery” of the vocal…loved it intertwined with the lyrics, marrs jangley riffs…they sound like no one else
I ❤The smiths and Morrissey I grow up with their music ....🤟😎🖤⚡♨️🇲🇽
The way he sings that line ‘punctured bicycle on a hillside desolate’ chills. Reminds me of being 15 again, sadly.
Yessss, Beth!! Morrisey and The Smiths, my adolescense and happy moments, thanks for the video
I think his best vocal performance with the Smiths is "I Know It's Over". If you want another go-around with the Smiths I suggest that song.
Absolutely phenomenal song. After I heard it I needed more.

Please do “I know it’s over” by The Smiths if you want to hear some pure Morrissey genius.
I would roll back time to see the Smiths
To actually see Morrissey sing live in the 80s, you'd have to go for something like The Tube (not TOTP) - there's an awesome 7 minute version of Barbarism begins at home which has to be seen (and heard) to be believed.
Your smile throughout the video says it all. Perfect.

This song and “I know it’s over” are two of my favorite vocal performances from Morrisey ever.
On the title track of “The Queen is Dead” his Mancunian accent is clear. Like the Beatles Liverpudlian accent in “Penny Lane”
I remember buying this record in 1984 at Rough Trade Records in SF. Was my favorite record of the 80s.
What Difference Does It Make? and Well I Wonder are other tracks which showcases Morrissey’s range..
Miserable Lie too
Trouble loves me
I saw the Smiths in 1986, still one of the best gigs I've ever been to 😊
This is in my opinion one of the greats. Love their music and that of their era. Funny enough I just listened to them, less than two minutes ago
@Harrison Gent you know my answer. It's yes btw.
Morissey consciously used his tone and vibrato to avoid a " bluesy" sound...because he's Morrisey, and he has to keep things proper and British.😂
I love Morrissey's voice. It might just be a matter of taste =)
I hope to see you react to Manic Street Preachers soon ;)
