Something I've heard from every generation-- "The Greatest Generation" (my grandparents), "The Silent Generation (my parents), "Boomers" (I'm a late Boomer 1961), "Gen X" (my younger brothers), "Millennials" (my nieces and nephews)-- at some point they all say, "Kids these days. . .blah, blah, blah." Alphas are going to say it, too, someday. Guaranteed.
Dividing people by the year they were born is as crude and ill-advised as dividing people by the color of their skin, race or sexual orientation. There are millions of old people who struggle, just as there are millions of young people struggling. The primary division in society is class. Solutions to the problems of old and young will be found in class struggle.
Reminds me of that Mike & The Mechanics song...Every Generation, blames the one before. And all of their frustrations come beating at your door. I just recently heard a person who couldn't have been more than late 20's saying "colored people". I agree with him, congressional people should all have term limits. the average person has to retire by 70 but you can still be a Senator at 90, please. I agree with you, I'm a boomer and I tell other boomers all the time to just look at prices now versus when you were that age, you can't buy 2 weeks worth of groceries for a family of 8 for $50, hello. You're not going to get a 1 bedroom apt for 20% of your monthly salary.
This is all mostly stuff every generation does as they age. People change their perspective as they get older. It's a function of the age these generations are now, not the generation they came from. Also the being engrossed in the phone isn't a Gen Z thing. There's moddle-aged people running into you with a cart at the supermarket because they're looking down at a phone while they're walking and they look up only long enough to say a half-assed "sorry".
So the worst thing about Gen X is that we like to work hard? Tell that to the boomers who labeled us slackers. Otherwise, that guy needs to just leave us out of it.
Dude, this guy is off. Boomers were hippies. Their parents were the old fashioned ones that used terminology like “colored”. My birth year technically makes me a millennial but using the internet for research was considered cheating until my 3rd year of college.
I'm a babyboomer. Born in 1960. The coolest generation in my opinion. We grew up in the 60's & 70's. Anyway, my son is a millennial. Born in 1984. When he was growing up he was too busy playing sports. And he also golfed and skate boarded. He did have a video game player but only played it when he came in and played before bed. ✌️❤️
I'm Gen X. Born in 1968. I don't think or act like what this guy described us. If anything, we want to be left alone. We are minding our business, doing our own thing, and younger Millennials and Gen Z want to lump us in with Boomers!? BOOMERS! We are the first generation who were raised by Boomers and had to deal with the crap they have done that we all are dealing with today. We came home from school to an empty house (Latchkey Kids) Boomers had to be reminded that they even had kids with commercials after 10:00pm. We are also the smallest generation out of all of these generations except maybe Gen Z.
I was born in 81 and have ALWAYS been more like what your describing as Gen-X. I have little in common with Milllenials really. Ironically I've been called Boomer, sometimes Gen-X, but never a Millenial, which says alot about me. lol. And yeah not sure what the guy was describing. I think Gen-X seem to the best.
Well said. 1968 over here, too. Boomers have been screwing things up for long enough. I second that we want to be left alone. Especially by government.
I dont even know which generation i belong in. Im a middle aged 56 y.o. woman. I guess I just dont pay much attention to it all. My meme ( French for grandmother) she would say " that highway robbery " regarding a 25 cent loaf of bread. She said ALL the time! I was born in '68. I think this generation is more entitled imho. We see it more and more. We Americans have nothing on Europe. They are good to their employees. Mandatory vacations etc. Here we work til we drop dead.
I would also like to defend the boomers for a minute. Here in the states, Civil Rights movement, women’s liberation, nuclear disarmament movement, all brought to you by boomers.
Feminism failed hard lol Now we have weak soy boys crying to their wife's boyfriends, instead of masculine men that could carry the infrastructure and protect the country.
All the more reason to dislike them for all but one of those things. They've always been self righteous and smug. It's time for them to shut up and sit down.
Yes. Work is who I am. I've been told by my millennial ( onlÿ child...I had him at the old age of 32) that I have no sense of self apart from mother and educator. I want to know why that's a problem. Why doesn't he feel the same way about a career?
I think his description of GenX work habits is true, with a grain of salt. It's that way because of Boomers. When we entered the workplace, we were called the Slacker Generation. Many of us wanted to change things, but we were limited in what we could change at that time, and there were a lot more Boomers to compete with in the workplace. We are the smallest generation. We had a lot of learning to do, too. We just didn't have as much of a learning curve as the younger generations. We are more tech savvy than he says, I think. But we are also much more adept at operating without technology than younger generations and that has served us well. We are also often underestimated because of our attitude in life. There a reason we are also the "Forgotten Generation."
If the US made cars with a stick shift manditory, we all wrote in cursive, and we had to use a rotary phone, gen X would be the last generation to be in charge. If only the Boomers would get out of the way.
@@Eniral441 I think you missed my joke. We straddle both the older ways and the newer technology. The young ones aren't taught cursive any more, few can drive a stick shift, or work a rotary phone. However, my husband has been known to hack into my old Blackberry to fix the RAM after a bad update shut it down (20 years ago), and back when he needed pagers, would order a new one, disassemble both, and create a new one with the features he liked from both. At 56, I'm the one who helps my mom with learning the capabilities of her cellphone. I taught her how to use Uber. Basically, I'm agreeing with you. Take the win.
I was born in 1989. Not afraid to work hard for what I want out of life. I do miss how things were simpler when I was growing up, but I would not want to go back to that time either as a way to live. I think we can find a balance between technology and actual socialization for everyone. Also, Millennials are also known as Gen Y. The original name is Gen Y, but when they realized that there was a group of teens and kids growing up during the change of the millennial change, the nickname the Millennials became the more common term to the generation. Every generation has their weaknesses and strengths. The time that we grew up in helped to mold us into the people that we grew up to be. Pretty spot on with the weaknesses, as these are what I hear that people tend to have issues with when it comes to these generations. My grandparents are from the Silent Generation, one of the generations that was not covered. The other generation that was not covered was the Greatest Generation.
"Gen X isn't tech savvy"... Um, Gen Xers created/perfected most of the tech we use in modern times... Dude is way off base, but at least he remembered that Gen X exists 🤪
So I was like Gen X is great, can’t say nothing about us. I worked 8am til 9:30 pm yesterday and it was my birthday, so, yeah, ok. I am tech savvy though and I am very open minded about all the social changes, it’s important to move forward.
Like this kid knows anything about older people other than that we're older. I'm Gen X, and I see a lot of young people disdaining work, yet somehow also expecting a lot of money. Like no, you're not going to make bank if you're calling in sick your first week because you just don't feel like working that day. So don't work if you don't want to, but don't bitch that you're broke, either. Life isn't a TikTok video. For 99% of us, you work or you don't eat.
I'm a wedding and marriage minister. I have seen over the course of my decades-long career how couples of different generations deal with things. Older couples want premarital counseling so they can discuss the hard subjects like s*x and finances. GenX also wants counseling, especially on how to combine two lives into one unit. Younger than GenX? Most do not want counseling. It's like they want to go in "blind" and figure things out as they come along. Which can work with some couples, but can definitely be an issue in a few years for others. Younger generations are quite individualistic - when I bring up that once married, their finances become the other partner's problem, too - shocked faces! Do they know what they want for final wishes if they died tomorrow? What? Still think they're immortal. They'll grow out of that when people their own age begin to die from diseases or accidents. With age comes wisdom, even if you think that wisdom is skewed.
Inflation isn’t a new concept, so saying homes are so much more expensive for millennials and Gen Z is like duh. Hey Gen Z, how you gonna ever afford a home without working your ass off? Until your young brains come up with a way to improve the economy and quality of life by doing less work, you will probably be stuck homeless and living off of your Gen X parents. But hey, thanks for your contributions. What were they, again?
Bro's really hating on boomers the most. What young generations always forget is this is a cycle. The younger generations are always more high and mighty, always claiming some higher ground as they are in a more modern world. But when, lets say Gen-Z are in their 80s, they will be the ones being mocked for being outdated and offensive. They will be the "boomers". And the young generations will riducle them. This is why I was never much into calling out older generations or praising younger ones. Because things change over time. The older you get, the more you see the patterns. When your young you have little life experience so you have alot of snobbyness ingrained in yourself. Until you get older and see the cycle. I do hear Gen-Z claim they will never be as bad as boomers who tended to be more racist, hateful towards LGBT...etc. And while those issue may not be a thing generations from now, who knows what the views of the future will be. There will surely be new labels mad eup for Gen-Z. Maybe being "The generation that was paranoid about robots and sentient AI!" or "The generation that thought the two party system was the only way". Who knows what the future brings.
I was born in ''65, so OG Xer here, and he is right about our generation but what's funny is that we started off hella progressive because our parents put Reagan in office and YUCK--but now my generational cohorts are becoming conservative af and it sucks
uh...well most people who start out 'progressive' (which nowadays is totally wrong being a progressive is regressive) eventually turn out conservative because they learn the reality of the world and how much money their government takes from them, wastes their money and abuses their power. It always happens even a good chunk of millennials which were further left than boomers 10 years ago have turned conservative as they got older. That is a generational constant as you age past 30 the chances of you becoming conservative goes way up.
As a GenX guy, the younger generations must begin to realize that they do not get to live a better life without going out and earning the money needed for said life. No one owes them anything. They just refuse to earn their way and instead they demand that everything be handed to them and presented in a way they want it. Well, too bad! No one is guaranteed the good life at all. They need to get off their butts and work. Maybe it they had put down the phone-computer and left the house once in a while, they would have a better understanding of real life. Instead these kids and young adults are weak, selfish brats with egos too large for the outdoors. Stop whining and get to work.
"Boomers did everything that would benifet them!" I mean, each generation does the same thing. Your kids will one day blame you for their financial woes, just as you blame your parents/grandparents. It's always easier to blame someone else. Admiteddly things are harder it seems of course, but still, we can't pretend that each generation DOESN'T vote for their own self interests.
Boomer here D.O.B. Sept 1959. Let's put this in perspective. My father bought our home in New Jersey in 1971, and it cost $40,000 and his new 1976 Chevy Nova for under $10,000. He worked most of his adult life, including serving 4 years in the army. He grew up and raised me in a merit system. If you want something special, you have to earn it. Get a job, keep it, stash away whatever you can, and keep doing it. I didn't take a real vacation until I was 40. Did I have to ask for help to get it? Yes but my father understood I was a single father and a disabled veteran with no breaks or time off, so he helped make it happen. My son is Gen Z and he's learned these lessons the hard way. He will hopefully learn if he wants to make more he's gotta do more. The whole philosophy of Boomers and before was shoot for the stars so if you just hit the moon at least you're not stuck in the same place. Gen Z reminds me of Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, "I want it now!"
@MsChiefsfan-w4k exactly the point is it's all relative. My father was far from rich and went awhile being unemployed to where I cased out a college I started when I was in the army and sent him the check to help him and my mother provide for my brothers.
