Luke you would want to get some exercise instead of sitting in your truck eating chicken suppers you are heading for a heart attack your eyes are nearly closing with the fat cop yourself on you fat boy
Noticed a couple of times when approaching roundabouts where you intend to carry straight on,you start indicating on approach before you get to the roundabout. I was always taught that when going round a roundabout you indicate at the exit prior to the one you intend taking not on approach.
How can any professional driver love having something that makes you just a steering attendant and that just for a short time before they won't need you at all. I can't agree with you on this Luke. Make sure you know where the nearest unemployment office is! Being captivated by high tech we are blinded what they are doing
Get used to it pal, it's only a matter of time before Scania and Volvo do exactly the same thing. the systems he talks about on this Merc are already on the new gen scania. first thing i do at the start of the day is turn them all off. Don't like the camera's tbh but they are useful when blind-siding.
Same.. I have a Scania,.. I never use any of it, i hate it all.. First thing i do after putting my card in the Tachometer is switch off all the assists.. Having those monitor mirrors inside the cabin would be horrible.. I cross my fingers scania new introduce these
Hi Luke, i also have that set up on a 19 plate DAF, it’s called ACC, (adaptive cruise control) which has 5 distance settings i also have an anti Lane departure sensor , I find them good to use but no so great when a car jumps into your gap in front, i also have to turn it off when overtaking other lorries, as it will drop speed at that critical moment when your close enough to manoeuvre out. Overall a good system, but remember it is a first step to putting us all out of work !!
Mad Muppet. The system in the Actros is actually called PPC... Predictive powertrain control. It’s leaps and bounds ahead of ACC regarding its capabilities and safety assist features. The tech that Mercedes are putting in their trucks now is absolutely outstanding.
@@norm4242 I have the same ACC on my Iveco Stralis. Uuse it a lot on the motorways, but it's a real pain in the behind on mountain roads here in Switzerland.
My merc is always playing up with electrical problems caused by faulty sensors. All these new electronics Will only lead to more problems for the last month i havent had my truck on the road for a full week.great truck when its ok but oh so many problems
First thing I do when I set off is turn the lane departure and AEBS ( auto emergency braking system ) OFF. loud screeching in your ear every time you go near the white line ( which is impossible not to do on our shitty roads ) and drops the anchor everytime something moves in front on the truck ! The AEBS is lethal haha
Luke, I watched this vlog after seeing your Christmas announcement. If Mercedes Benz are prepared to let you drive there truck I am sure your reputation will precede you and job offers will come your way. Good luck for the future Barry, Western Australia
I think the main concern with this is that the better the system is the more you trust it and the less 'on guard' you become. Right now you don't trust it and your foot is ready to break. IF the system is good, in 6 months you'll just let it do it's thing. Then when it fails to detect a new mini roundabout you won't be ready to 'take charge' because your expecting it to be right as it 'always' is. I think it works great on a motorway to keep with the speed of traffic, but on a more technical road layout, especially with auto's its just not that hard to press the pedals yourself.
You’re an amazing bloke Luke. I admire your cool calm attitude. I know when my company used to give me a new vehicle to try out, although it was probably a later upgraded version of my own truck, it used to put me completely on edge, and if I’m honest I would be quite pleased to get my old truck back. Not in your case it seems. Anyway keep safe, see you in your next video Regards Mick🇬🇧
18 plate daf have a similar feature Adaptive cruise control It reads the road for you but it reads the road all the time for you even when the feature is not turned on If a car cuts across the front of you or in traffic at 30 or 40 ish and you get a bit close to the vehicle in front and if a driver doesn't see the traffic backing up etc The truck takes over the controls and brings the truck to a stop and does not let the driver retake control until it has slowed the vehicle enough to a safe distance again
There was a driver who works at my place, had a car bounce off the left hand side barrier into the side of his cab. Told the officer he side swiped her, that didn’t go down in her favour given all our trucks have cameras in all directions, and radar, they moan about those cameras as it’s ‘spying’ on them, safe to say he was glad they were there.
Amazing tech in that truck, I find it amazing how it can read the signs and adapt speed for corners and roundabouts. There is too much tech though which means there is more to go wrong like as a fail safe would you be told to carry a emergency set of clip on mirrors in case the screen that the mirrors are on fails?
Nice video Luke. 👍 These things are great as safety features but I'd say we're a long long way off from fully automated. Our roads are not fit for it, especially for the last few miles off of the bigger roads. Some of the remote roads I deliver through are never going to be done without humans. We're talking mirrors in bushes and low branches, a couple of inches clearance on turns and shunts at junctions even for rigids. I'd also be concerned about the lorry picking up on a 50 sign and accelerating to that as up here in Scotland and also in NI we're still at 40 limits for trunk roads and 50 for dual carriageways. I doubt the lorry knows if it's in England or not. Things like this do need to be developed though as it seems in these days of phone distractions etc. people just can't be trusted to drive properly with their full attention.
Mirror cameras are very useful 👍👍 however switch the rest off, they are not needed. In cab CCTV above the pasanger door does certainly improve cutting out bad driving habits .👌
Interesting video. The detail in the smart cruise control is much much more informative than the one in my car, e.g. showing the speeds of other vehicles. The system can get data from updated sources. There is a crowd-sourced map called Openstreetmap. It is very useful and the data (not just the picture of the map) is all freely available. There are other paid-for sources too,
This is awsome but on narrow roads it picks up metal signs on bends and sometimes cars coming in the other direction. I love it most in slow moving traffic, just hold the steering wheel.
Nice video Luke. I remember when Mercedes brought out the Power lines and we all needed education on how to drive it. Wouldn't know where to start with the new ones.
But where merc win is because in other trucks when a driver has the vehicle set at 50mph the etc if a driver applies the brakes they have to reset the cruise control etc But as merc is effectively a limiter it prevents the vehicle going above 50mph for example but a driver can still apply the break but the truck will not let the driver go above 50 etc as the limiter is not affected by the application of the break etc
omg luke im impressed with that review kev tee take notice thats the way to do it not like a promo for the company , anything that makes reversing safer has got to be good so a thumbs up to them mirrors as for the rest no thanks drivers need to be 100% awake and incontrol not waiting for the truck to do the work 4 him , and tbh your meant 2 enjoy driving the truck our firm still has a f12 volvo 12 speed manuel no speed limiter no electronics just a good engine and so much fun 2 drive
I agree, Luke done a great demonstration of the capabilities of the Actros but completely different circumstances to my reviews, Luke had the truck to use at his free will, I was attending media days with the brand and it's not quite at easy to do what you want with the very limited time you have.
I like the idea of the camera mirror less to break off with the over grown bushes and tree branches growing over the roads of Kent and Sussex . I reckon the replacement camera might be a bit more expensive than a mirror glass though. Maybe you could point out bad A road that need cutting back in if enough drivers get together about it councils may act or not highways England still haven't done anything about the A27 single carriage way near the long man its almost single file for trucks now. Cheers for the vlogs Luke. Grab Ben
The new Mercedes econic bin lorries in the council where I work have a automatic braking system and the guys were driving into a new housing estate which still had final surface to go on so it had raised manholes as they drove towards them the brakes suddenly came on and nearly through the helpers through the window. The braking system thought the manholes were an obstacle. And they call this safety! if a car had a been coming in behind them it would a been in to the back of them.
I've been using one of those for about 2 weeks. The cruise control is good although I bottle it sometimes and take control myself. The mirrors however are a nightmare, especially in the dark. I reverse onto loading bays 3 or 4 times a night and have taken to hanging out of the cab and ignoring the mirrors. Worse than useless bordering on dangerous.
Luke, I think it's called predicted cruise control :) Ive got standard cruise control on the car so want adaptive or predicted on the next one ;) oh & self park haha stay safe
Beautiful truck with beautiful adaptive cruise control. I don’t think the driver will be removed any time soon but the systems will definitely help to become one step to automation. Automation with the human element still behind the wheel as I think people find that reassuring that there is still a human that can take control should systems fail
Thanks for this, very interesting. It seems to know about roundabouts long before they're visible, implying it's getting that information from the GPS route planning system (which might not be up-to-date?). I wonder if it gets the speed limit info from GPS (could be out of date?) or physical signs on the road (could be obscured by foliage or other vehicles?). Are the "mirrors" reversed left and right (as real mirrors would be) or simple camera images (could be tricky to get used to?). These aren't meant as criticisms of the truck (and certainly not of you), I'm just asking questions out of curiosity.
With you on the gps and maps, it can take more than 12 months for these things to get updated with new locations and road changes, its a good tool but its not 100%. Google maps gets it wrong regularly especially if location is situated next to motorway, it will take you to the motorway carriageway if your not on the ball.
Thanks for showing this it's interesting to see and I think we're a long way off driverless, these are just tools to aid the driver you can't replace a human pilot just yet. Reversing with the mirrors seems odd maybe because they are not actually in the side of the truck so that's why it's hard to keep straight ? Anyway I look forward to seeing more , keep the videos coming , cheers! 👍
Don't get lulled into false security and forget to turn on the system so it doesn't slow and brake. This happened on a merc car demo and the car smashed into the stopped vehicles.
im all for an easier life but two things must remain unchanged the driver and the wages,so the camera on each side moves to keep the back end in the mirror thats a good thing, and luke c you are well spoken and i never missed anything you said well done driver i could watch you all day,one last thing is that unit like most mercs weak on hills ? keep the vlogs coming bud.
All the truck needs to do know is stear it self and bam you got a driverless truck. My daf has a similar system adaptive cruse. The scania with the next gen uses the satnav to read when there is hills and simula obstacles and will pre select the gears. I predict in my driving carrie there will be driverless Trucks, witch will me huge job losses and for those who remain may have to accept low pay. Lot of this technology is cool and amazing but I’ve got a feeling we are being used a testers for the tech for driverless trucks. There may be some danger with this predictive drive train mainly with the Driver becoming complacent and some drivers concentration could be affected and response time affected in emergency situations. Good Vlog and time will tell with this tech.
and that is one of the reasons for my retirement. does this truck play a lullaby as you go along? would send me to sleep. I'd rather be wide awake and concentrating on what's going on around me. just as today's newbies struggle with a manual box, in ten years time drivers won't be able to cope if they have to do more than steer.
I'd like abit of a tour of the outside like where are the cameras mounted for the mirrors are they at the back of the cab or are they at the front of the cab etc.
Not just in traffic. I had it slam on the anchors on the motorway when a plastic bag blew in front of me. I've also had the brake alarm come on when going under bridges. Maybe the Merc one is better but the DAF one is shit.
Not sure I like the cruise control auto slow/speed up part of the truck. I like that it does detect the other vehicles speeds but for me I would fear that cause I not doing anything on motorways that I would lose my alertness cause you grow used to how the system works therefore you grow over dependent on the system???? Also with the alertness comes sleepness, cause your not having to speed up or slow down and constantly making your brain tick over as vehicles come and go from overtakes etc. Don't get me wrong I'm not against the future stuff, but I do wonder if this is actually a good thing to have in vehicles in general
see.... i find a lot of comments on this video hilarious because i don't think most people realise how horrific and totally non standard any yard we enter is.... i would love for a computer to figure out what the fuck you're supposed to do in some places when as a driver you have to get out find someone be told to find someone else then be told to move to a place to wait to be told to move somewhere else then swing round and back into the newly invented *this is where we unload this time* area when my truck can do that for me........ i'll be having a brew
95% of accidents involve human error. If automated systems help the driver to ensure where possible that potential is reduced then I'm all for it . Can't see in the next ten years how the system can operate the steering with all the variations our A roads through up especially parked cars etc etc . Tesla have auto pilot for cars but it's only really suited for motorways and dual carriageways let alone tractor and trailer on tight b roads and they are at the forefront of these systems. Embrace it . It's a support for the driver.
Unless you use type of trucks, you will understand that they can cause accidents too, mine picks up objects or obstructions that dont exist, for example mine thinks it's going to hit a bridge so it will anchor up, if something is behind me it's going to cause an accident. These bridges are motorway and dual carriageway so plenty of room to get through, also it will anchor up on going through big enough gaps, not 100% rather drive old school
Need a system on trucks that prevents it from overtaking another truck going 1mph slower on a dual carriageway taking forever to get past holding up a line of traffic behind it.
twice it could have went at r/about as car on your right was blocked with vehicles coming towards you .leading to un-necessary build up of vehicles at your back .and eating into your driving time .
@@lukecinahgv OK thanks for the info. I'm sure it used to be 40 ( I know cos a camera got me on route to Peterborough), but i retired from HGV driving 17 years ago, been living in Thailand for the last 12 years. Subbed.
The truck is great until it makes a mistake (which it will) and hits something or someone then you are responsible and the law will say you were not in control of your vehicle !
I’m with the others here, you’ll be calling it a bag of shit as it drives past you DRIVERLESS as you’re walking to the job centre. I’m not stone aged but I remember when trucks needed truck drivers. My VW T6 has all this kit and I hate it, it spends its time deactivated.
I got to say technology is a great thing, but then like that example your driving being 9/10. that kind of thing should not be monitored by the company, even if it is a good score, it should only report things like this vehicle has been involved in an accident, or a serious accident and requesting emergency response, and vehicle location when involved in an accident, for say the driver is unresponding to phone calls etc. or to send reports back to the depot that the vehicle has got a serious say electrical, or mechanical fault, or potential fault so that the depot can order parts while the vehicle is on the road, plus the depot knows of the exact reason for a driver to report a fault so that they can attend with the right equipment rather than a general diagnosis like my battery is flat, or the headlight isn't working even the replacement light isn't working, but the bulb is ok, type of thing. but driving, unless a very serious fault shouldn't be allowed to be monitored back at the depot.
What happens if you get electronic issues and you loose the mirror cameras and your miles from home? Legally you won’t be able to drive the truck and it’s going to cost a fortune for call out to try and fix it and what happens if they don’t have a new part in stock the truck could be off the road loosing money for a considerable period of time I personally don’t think it’s a viable option in the real world
I just can’t see the point in replacing mirrors with cameras? You surely won’t be able to see as vehicles as far back on the motorway, will you? And at night, won’t car’s headlights just blend and glare the camera, so judging distance will be hard? Blindspots, etc. Cars flashing you... will the cameras even grab your attention like mirrors would?
You can see just as far back on motorways Headlights do not blind camera. (See pov video I did) You don't need to judge distance as there are 4 yellow lines on the mirror bottom one is the back end of your trailer and the top 3 are distance lines Less blindspotd overall as there's no wingmirror sticking of your cab. The cameras also track and follow the end of your trailer so there is no such thing as a blind side reverse. Cameras do grab the flashes of vehicles. However, you don't need to see a flash as you have the distance lines which shows you when it's safe to pull out.
That’s cool Luke, I have the same as you in my car I just have to steer etc it’s a cool thing, as long as they don’t get the truck to steer too (my car also have the ability to steer for me in an emergency), don’t want them replacing you guys. Top vid Luke, I think you will be sad 😞 when you get back in your truck as yours has non of that new technology. It’s great to see that they are putting this stuff in trucks as it been in luxury cars for years. Keep the vlogs coming 👍
I will give it another 30-50 years before most vehicles on the road can drive themselves. It will certainly solve the driver shortage for haulage companies when they dont need drivers anymore. I actually wonder if they will take the responsibility of controlling the vehicles away eventually by not even providing controls for human input when they build them. I have seen a prototype of a self driving car without a steering wheel or brakes and accelerator. I wonder if forklift drivers will also lose their jobs, the only job for a human will be to strap and unstrap the load.
I like where the technology is going but it’s way too much for me. It’s just a constant guessing game what the truck is going to do next. I’ll stick to my 2016 scania. Probably the last of the real drivers trucks

Another amazing blog Luke tvm for the insight the new tec.
Keep the good work up luke
I'd like abit of a tour of the outside like where are the cameras mounted for the mirrors are they at the back of the cab or are they at the front of the cab etc.
They're mounted at the top of the door pointing back) above where normal mirrors would be
careful with adaptive cruise control as in city traffic it can break when its not needed
Not just in traffic. I had it slam on the anchors on the motorway when a plastic bag blew in front of me. I've also had the brake alarm come on when going under bridges. Maybe the Merc one is better but the DAF one is shit.
Hi, can you advise me what’s your top salary? Take home each week/month? Apologies if this sounds cheeky 😃
Great video Luke best video for a long while
Not sure I like the cruise control auto slow/speed up part of the truck.
I’d be happy with a truck from this decade
Mercedes truck eh? Ned Kelly calls them "hill detectors".
see.... i find a lot of comments on this video hilarious because i don't think most people realise how horrific and totally non standard any yard we enter is.... i would love for a computer to figure out what the fuck you're supposed to do in some places when as a driver you have to get out find someone be told to find someone else then be told to move to a place to wait to be told to move somewhere else then swing round and back into the newly invented *this is where we unload this time* area
when my truck can do that for me........ i'll be having a brew
may be they should think about putting this in all vehicles
Give me an ERF with a twin splitter any day of the week, its not truck driving anymore its truck steering.
Spot on Tony 😊👍
@@stevieblokes_vlogs Cheers buddy, love your videos by the way
95% of accidents involve human error.
These bridges are motorway and dual carriageway so plenty of room to get through, also it will anchor up on going through big enough gaps, not 100% rather drive old school
awsome bit of kit
Awesome video, what was the music you used for the time-lapsed sections?
That is a mad truck mate but mercs are expensive.
Nice truck strange not seeing mirrors on outside
good stuff nice reversing maneuver and cracking vlog as always luke drive safe bud :) #RoadLegends
Amazing vid luke
close luke the place you were going to for jewsons is called pronounced god-al-ming love the video and the demonstrator.
So when do you get to drive this truck? Seems your not needed ,do you know how to drive a manual ?
Yes I can drive a manual
I’m not sure where you’re indicating to go on approach to the RA when you’re going straight
Time stamp?
i had one of these for a day and before i left the yard i turned all that bullshit off
PPC? It all started with KITT!!!! Next it will talk to you, you could have Kev Tee's voice as KITT!! Cheeeeeeers
Nice meeting you Luke at truckfest
If you activate the foot rake will it override the system and you would have to reset afterwards?
Yes and yes
where did you get the recovery led light from in the front window ?
How to start my UA-cam trucking channel? I just started trucking in SA :) :)
Need a system on trucks that prevents it from overtaking another truck going 1mph slower on a dual carriageway taking forever to get past holding up a line of traffic behind it.
any tips for new a new driver? ive just past my class 2 and looking for work. another great video btw ;)
print cv off get safety boots and hi viz and go to local companies.
twice it could have went at r/about as car on your right was blocked with vehicles coming towards you .leading to un-necessary build up of vehicles at your back .and eating into your driving time .
Isn't the speed limit for an HGV 40mph not 50mph on all single carriage roads in the UK?
Only in Scotland. In wales and England it’s 50 on single carriageways and 60 on duel carriageways
@@lukecinahgv OK thanks for the info. I'm sure it used to be 40 ( I know cos a camera got me on route to Peterborough), but i retired from HGV driving 17 years ago, been living in Thailand for the last 12 years. Subbed.
@@bobn1944 it was indeed 40 at one point mate. I think it changed around 2015/2016 time but don’t quote me on that
What is the fuel economy on this?
The truck is great until it makes a mistake (which it will) and hits something or someone then you are responsible and the law will say you were not in control of your vehicle !
The start of us being automated out of jobs. Good times.
I’m with the others here, you’ll be calling it a bag of shit as it drives past you DRIVERLESS as you’re walking to the job centre. I’m not stone aged but I remember when trucks needed truck drivers. My VW T6 has all this kit and I hate it, it spends its time deactivated.
An automatic is not a traditional truck try driving an 18 speed crash box !
I got to say technology is a great thing, but then like that example your driving being 9/10. that kind of thing should not be monitored by the company, even if it is a good score, it should only report things like this vehicle has been involved in an accident, or a serious accident and requesting emergency response, and vehicle location when involved in an accident, for say the driver is unresponding to phone calls etc. or to send reports back to the depot that the vehicle has got a serious say electrical, or mechanical fault, or potential fault so that the depot can order parts while the vehicle is on the road, plus the depot knows of the exact reason for a driver to report a fault so that they can attend with the right equipment rather than a general diagnosis like my battery is flat, or the headlight isn't working even the replacement light isn't working, but the bulb is ok, type of thing. but driving, unless a very serious fault shouldn't be allowed to be monitored back at the depot.
what you dam well expect for 2019/2020. and im 29.
What happens if you get electronic issues and you loose the mirror cameras and your miles from home? Legally you won’t be able to drive the truck and it’s going to cost a fortune for call out to try and fix it and what happens if they don’t have a new part in stock the truck could be off the road loosing money for a considerable period of time I personally don’t think it’s a viable option in the real world
You're absolutely right 👍
I just can’t see the point in replacing mirrors with cameras?
You surely won’t be able to see as vehicles as far back on the motorway, will you?
And at night, won’t car’s headlights just blend and glare the camera, so judging distance will be hard?
Blindspots, etc.
Cars flashing you... will the cameras even grab your attention like mirrors would?
You can see just as far back on motorways
Headlights do not blind camera. (See pov video I did)
You don't need to judge distance as there are 4 yellow lines on the mirror bottom one is the back end of your trailer and the top 3 are distance lines
Less blindspotd overall as there's no wingmirror sticking of your cab. The cameras also track and follow the end of your trailer so there is no such thing as a blind side reverse.
Cameras do grab the flashes of vehicles. However, you don't need to see a flash as you have the distance lines which shows you when it's safe to pull out.
Is the built in tomtom a hgv one.. ie.. can you set height, weights and width etc
Yes you can mate. I have a cab tour video coming out soon which will show in more detail.
@@lukecinahgv That's brilliant! Be daft if Mercedes didn't. Look forward to the upcoming vids 👍
Fantastic truck the future is looking good any thing to make a job easier is good to me
I don't like the idea personally, but each to there own
nice truck
I really wana have a go in it
10:25 I thought it was a Mercedes??? XD
I love you truck is nice looking good
I will give it another 30-50 years before most vehicles on the road can drive themselves.
People will be able to rent their cars out as taxis while they're at work/sleeping/holiday etc.
I like where the technology is going but it’s way too much for me. It’s just a constant guessing game what the truck is going to do next. I’ll stick to my 2016 scania. Probably the last of the real drivers trucks
15:06 that was abit of an evil laugh.
Well that's the end of truck driver careers
@@TrooperTrading chill out mate it's a bit of fun, it's ok u can still drive for a living just a bit of fun.
Ok mate no worries
It's not all that technology is useless and dangerous 😂
