Did I hear you say you didn't know what the buttons are for? They are to take the stress off the fabric at that point so the fabric doesn't fall apart.

Thanks for watching :) In this video I couldn't tell if the buttons were sewn just on the top or all the way through (they were sewing all the way through, and around the metal tip) until I took it apart. And yes, you are right, the button takes the tension off the high stress area of those tips and prevents the thread from cutting through the fabric! Thanks for pointing this out :)
