I can remember when there were no houses beyond Moores Hill on the Yardley Road out of Olney. Best childhood memories visiting my grandparents dozens of times.

    Hi folks, nice little drive there. I've often wondered why lamb is so expensive here seeing as the countryside seems to be full of them. I know I'm in the minority here but I love the liver, much nicer than calfs or pigs in my opinion. Liver and onions with gravy is an old British classic, great with mashed potatoes.

    • @productjoe4069
      @productjoe4069 10 місяців тому +2

      You’re not even paying the full price for lamb. It’s sold at a substantial loss (around 20%) by most supermarkets.
      I don’t know the exact reason it’s so expensive, but most meat is sold at a loss in the UK. The only meats that make a profit for supermarkets are chicken and some fish (but even then the margin is razor thin).
      I can speculate a little about the main factors from my experience with poultry supply chains. The largest portion of the cost of a meat are feed additives (think vitamins and minerals), and vaccinations. Sheep are particularly prone to disease, so probably require more of both of these. There may also be specification issues if sheep tend to have a greater range of sizes. That can lead to a lot of wastage because processing machines aren’t very flexible (one of the things that makes chicken so cheap is that they can be grown very uniformly, and only take a few weeks to go from chick to fully grown, which massively helps with demand prediction and so choosing slaughter dates).

      Maybe because the sheep need to be outside to graze, and because they are small there is not as much meat as there is on a bullock. Plus we get the bulk of our milk from the cow. With sheep we only get the meat. For some reason we don't produce wool anymore. I live in an area which has been pivotal for wool production for at least 2000 years. The sheep that brought wealth here was the Cotswold Lion with thick thick fleeces. Now the sheep in the fields behind me are Textels which I think are more like pigs with snouty noses and grunty baas and they have been bred for meat. Their wool is not thick.

    As you said the UK in winter can be cloudy and quite dull due to the winter sun light but I've always seen it to have a almost apocalyptic stark beauty. The winter sky can be very striking sometimes with dark bands of clouds which can break producing a intense brightness which catches your eye because you've not seen it as regularly as the rest of the year.

    There seems to be many of my fellow Brits in this comments section that are surprised that some Americans have never even seen a sheep and have definitely never tried lamb or mutton before.
    So I have some stats to demonstrate why I believe this is the case and they are truly astonishing.
    In the US there is around 336 million humans and around 5.3 million sheep.
    In the UK there is around 68 million humans and around 33 million sheep.
    So the UK has 1/5th the human population of the US but we have 6x the number of sheep.
    Don't forget that here in the UK we have a long long association with sheep that goes back many hundreds of years. We have traded sheep and their wool, eaten lamb and mutton for all that time too. There are whole towns here in the UK that owe their existence to the sheep and wool trade such as the traders using the profits to build beautiful local churches that still stand today.

    Here in the UK I grew up eating the big three (B, L and P) plus chicken and turkey, but we also ate offal, the liver, kidneys, hearts of lamb, tongues of beef and my mother made brawn from a pigs head. Some people eat brains, chitterlings, lights and tripe which are all bits of the insides. Oh, black pudding is good. I'm not partial to these, but I do like stuffed lambs hearts and liver with bacon and onions. My father had farming clients and brought home pheasant and partridge, and we also ate rabbit regularly. I still get the odd pheasant given to me, and I have to pluck and draw them myself. I do the plucking outside. It's hard to get hold of a rabbit nowadays but sometimes I get them. My mother used to make a stew with bacon and white parsley sauce. I really like it, there were a lot of bones though but I like biology and learned all the names of each one as I ate! I do a French recipe with prunes and apricots and brandy. It's really good. (the recipe works with chicken as well). I travelled a lot and ate horse in France, Water Buffalo in Nepal, Kangaroo in Australia where I lived for a while. Back here during the BSE crisis, we ate Ostrich instead. My son and a friend cooked and ate an entire sheep's heat, brains included. He seems OK but went vegetarian for quite a few years afterwards!

    There are stone walls around fields in parts of New England (eg Shawshank Redemption). If you are ploughing a field with oxen you do not want to carry the stones too far. Once built, which is a winter job when nothing else to do, they require less maintenance than hedges that require laying every couple of years.
    Venison is good.

    A nice trip out this morning and some way off your normal routes. Can't say I've ever been tempted to try sheep products apart from lamb. I do suggest that you try venison. It is a strong tasting meat, very fat free and tasty.
    There are many places of interest near your destination today. The Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden is an outstanding museum of planes mainly pre WW2. Theres a nice garden and cafe attached as well. Usually some light aircraft flying. Sorry not to see the dogs "going to the bathroom". A quaint American expression which always amuses me! Not far from me in Peterborough is a brilliant farm shop and cafe ( Moor farm) where the toilets are actually signed 'rest rooms'!

    This was very helpful as my wife and I are trying to decide if we want to drive and rent a car when we go for our England trip. Are the curvy arrows in the middle of the road indicators that it is ok to pass? Also is England this green most of the winter? Great vid thanks! Don't worry about the camera this was very informative for me. Cheers

    • @RonSeymour1
      @RonSeymour1 10 місяців тому +9

      The arrows on the road that curve inwards are to warn you to get into your lane if you are overtaking. There is probably a blind bend ahead or other restrictions. You can overtake anywhere provided it is safe to do so and you do not cross any sold line between the lanes. Solid lines are to be treated as a brick wall. That doesn't stop some idiots from crossing into the oncoming lane, but it is illegal. Overtaking on the brow of a hill is illegal, for obvious reasons, with or without the solid lines. You will see various speed warnings, either on the road or signed. The flashing speed sign lets you know whether or not you are over or under the limit and are not speed cameras, more advisory. You get a smiley face if you are under the limit. The white circle with a black cross is the national speed limit sign, 60mph on country B roads. And yes, the fields are green during the winter unless covered in snow. Summer fields will be green or yellow from rape seed but if we have a drought they will turn brown until the first rain.

    I have not tried sheep's milk but always buy whole goat's milk from Sainsbury's which I much prefer to cow's milk.
    Great for making flat white coffee's at home.
    Quick tip: If you go to France,or worse, Italy, do NOT try to get what Americans, very falsely in my view, call 'coffee' ! As they will simply call for the guillotine to be put back in service!
    And very rightly so, in my opinion, as American 'coffee' is an offence against God and man! :-0

    You have to be careful of wild muntjac ( deer) especially at night times as they just cross roads and come out of bushes, hedges, gardens. They are a nuisance and can cause thousands of pounds of damage to your car if you hit one. I’m enjoying your video. You drive better than some British people.

    • @DaydreamersBarn
      @DaydreamersBarn  9 місяців тому

      Thanks for the kind words. We are aware of the muntjacs....one of us is petrified of them, lol. We have noticed we see them more as seasonal animals, though. Is that accurate? Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers 🍻 Chris and Jess.

    Tbh.....I skipped thru most of this. Its normal for me. I know it's not probably aimed at me or Brits in general. I liked seeing the farm etc. BUT how American does your husband look??? He looks like Dale Earnhard! 😁 Hats! You never mentioned hats! Baseball hats/truckers hats, hats in general. Generally not worn often here, but in the States, EVERYBODY wears them! 😁 You love the back roads in the UK and we love the backroads in Merica. We are very similar in looks obviously too. This is not a racist remark but something I've noticed.....we've been a few places stateside. NY, NJ, DE, PA, MD, FL, AL, MS, TX, GA, SC, NC, TN! Done a few roadtrips. Just what I've noticed. NOT racist! Okay.....in Florida, a lot of Hispanics. In Texas, a lot of Mexicans. In Tennessee, everybody was like us! LOL. 😆🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
