    Nothing is waterproof when it rains all day -- welcome to the PNW! Western Washington and Oregon rarely have the big downpours, but it's constantly wet from autumn to summer and only dry for about three months. You gave great advice in this video.
    Keeping your feet dry is difficult over many days, even in waxed leather boots, but you found the best answer for keeping hands dry and warm. We use Showa 282 on our trail work, they're bright blue gloves made for fish processing and are really tough. Also, rain gear is generally sealed vinyl over fabric, anything else wets through over long days.

    Hi Mari! Just woke up here in CA. Hope you’re well, and loving the PCT vlogs. I’m currently doing a hiking challenge, consisting of 5 hikes (4-7 miles each). I’m definitely not a hiker (more of a mediocre walker), but your adventures really makes me wanna just get out and be in the big everything of nature. Have a great week!

    Brilliant on the rubber gloves. When I did house cleaning I wore those gloves with cloth under gloves cuz rubber gloves made my hands sweaty and nasty without the cloth gloves underneath

    Hi Mari, Dixie of Homemade Wunderlust said her feet got bigger after doing so much hiking. She shows her feet while on the trail sometimes. They can look pretty beat up. They are also long. Anyway, she's pretty cool and doesn't mind showing what a sight they can be. She did the el camino with her sister and I enjoyed watching them and listening to what they liked and didnt like on that trail. Ok, so at some point you should probably show us your funny looking feet, bunion and all ha ha. Yeah, so I never wore those particular shoes but maybe I will try a pair sometime soon. 😄👍

    Olympus 3.0 are fantastic. Was the best I wore last year 2019. Timp 1.5 at start of year and timp 1.5 at end of year since I couldn't get the Olympus when I needed them. Kitchen gloves, yeah, mine were blue.

    Totally agree with you about the injinji socks! And I get holes in them super fast. They have a hiking sock but I like the feel of their running version so much better.

    MARI- the kitchen glove hack. Omg you just blew my mind girl! Also- you didn’t double up on your socks (toe liners and reg socks) the whole time? Thanks so much for sharing! I’m now thinking about custom insoles! Xoxox

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  4 роки тому

      Haha desperate times call for desperate measures! I didn’t do the double up the whole time because I felt like the extra layer defeated the purpose of the toe socks for me personally 😊

    Hi Mari. Did you get your orthotics off of a website or did you go to a podiatrist?
    I’m looking for a recommendation :-)

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  4 роки тому

      I’m got them from a podiatrist, which I thought was good because he really ensured they were the right fit for me. I had to go back several times for him to tweak them, but I think it was worth it!

    Good Job :o) . . .
    SofSole inserts seem to last just about for ever as well. My feet are the opposite if yours. Where did you get your inserts? I have some 300.00 custom insoles that are useless.
    Dishwashing/cleaning gloves dont fit my hands so I buy the blue ones that Dixie used on the CDT and pay 10.00 for shipping. Home Depot just does not have the selection they use to have. Maybe I need to check a commercial janitor supply store.

    • @mari.johnson

      I got mine from a podiatrist. I’ll check out that brand! Oh yeah, the blue ones are supposed to be good! Showa or something like that?

    Hi Mari, I also have flat feet but was told that my Altra Lone Peaks were too flexible for orthopaedic inserts. So I'm curious on your of insert and whether your Altra are stiffer than the Lone Peaks (I've not found a better replacement yet). I'll be back in NZ in May so if you got there then it may be an option for me. Thanks

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  4 роки тому

      Yeah the Olympus are much better than lone peaks if you have flat feet. They don’t carry them in nz though which is a bummer!

    • @CherylLewisPCT
      @CherylLewisPCT 4 роки тому

      Mari Johnson I notice the Olympus have versions... 2.5, 3.0, 3.5... are they like the Lone Peaks and one model is far superior to the others?

    Thanks for this, Mari. 💕. Have just finished watching your Finale. No spoilers from me. ☺️. I have just been diagnosed with a bunion, too. May I ask if it was uncomfortable for you along the trail? And even more personally, will you be having surgery for this foot condition? I’ve been told I need surgery, but I’m afraid that will make things worse. I know you are not a medical person, but hearing about your own experience will help educate me about my options. Thanks so much! 💐

    • @mari.johnson
      @mari.johnson  4 роки тому

      Way to hold out to the end! Sorry about your bunion. I was first diagnosed with one about 10 years ago and that podiatrist syringed out fluid from it, which was probably one of the most painful things in my life 😬. Kind of turned me off podiatrists. But then I knew I needed a solution, so I saw a different one and he said surgery wasn’t necessary and got me on the path of orthotics and proper footwear. I then found another podiatrist who I liked better (and was cheaper!) who made me the orthotics I used on trail. I’m happy to say that it didn’t hurt at all on trail! Altras and injinjis worked great for me. It’s a long journey finding what works for you, but don’t give up! And definitely get a second opinion about surgery. It’s not the only solution usually. Wish you all the best!
