ASANTES Vs. DENKYIRA: FULL STORY: THE QUEST WITH MAAME GRACE

  • Background:
Denkyira was a powerful nation of Akan people that existed before the 1620s, in what is now modern-day Ghana. Like all Akans, they originated from Bono state. Before 1620, Denkyira was called Agona. The ruler of the Denkyira was called Denkyirahene and the capital was Jukwaa.
The Ashanti were subjects and tributary to Denkyira Kingdom until 1701, when with the help of Okomfo Anokye, the Ashanti defeated Denkyira at the Battle of Feyiase, and Denkyira became a tributary to the Ashanti Empire. This was led by Ntim Gyakari the then Denkyirahene.
Maame Grace visits the Kumasi Cultural Center to unearth the history and relationship between these two great states.

The deeper I delve into Ghanaian Akan history, the more I discover that the Ashantis may have been overrated over the years in Ghana. They are, in essence, just like any other tribe in Ghana. However, their prominence increased notably due to their alliance with the British. The Ashantis were involved in the sale of more coastal people, such as the Ga-Dangbe and Fante groups, to the Danes, Portuguese, and Catholics than all the overripe tomatoes at Mokola Market. As the saying goes, 'empty barrels make the most noise.

    • @stephenboateng9360

We had the Gold Coast and the Asante Empire at that time and they fought the British for over 100 years as written in the books by the whites who were part of it at that time. They fought for the independence of this country. Jealous and envied towards Asantes will last forever but we keep growing. We have done a lot for this country, building the first University in the country (legon). Anyone who doesn't appreciate will never be appreciated. FACTS
