This F-16 dodged 6 surface-to-air missiles in an airstrike gone wrong

- During the opening days of Operation Desert Storm, one American F-16 pilot overcame incredible odds by dodging not just one surface-to-air missile fired at him, but six in a row - and all without the benefit of flares or chaff to help. Although today we often dismiss Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi military as hopelessly outmatched in this fight, footage captured from inside the aircraft offers a unique insight into the life or death struggle fighter pilots actually faced in the skies over Iraq.

When I watched the guncam footage of this, I was awestruck. He basically did everything right while riding a lightning bolt of adrenaline. Rarely did he let his F16 leave the performance envelope, and kept his speed around 350mph as much as possible to keep juking those pesky flies. Dude is a boss.
Wow! Seeing those F-111 Aardvarks tasked as ECM/EW's was a new one to me, had no idea they performed this role. Watching him manage speed and altitude, time and time again, against all those split second decisions is just incredible. Watching the aircraft yaw (assuming he is doing this to gain visuals) while climbing or descending to keep airspeed in maneuvering windows is just incredible. Appreciate all the background on the strike package and how things ended up like they did.
Like you - I'm a HAWG NUT Brrt. But the F-16 is my first love. They were fairly new when I enlisted.
That said- Major Tulia (sp?) YOU sir deserve nothing but respect and awe!
I've always known the "jocks" we're a different breed. But the Major is head and shoulders above the next pilot.
The Falcon AND the Airman were both pushed to their absolute limits!!
Good job Major Tulia!
@@terryp79 Sure. The F-16 is a beautiful plane with a long and glorious service, but it is at the end of it's life cycle. You cannot upgrade it indefinitely. It first flew in the 70s.
That's old stuff now, they are putting everything into pods now.
It was nicknamed the sparkvark
I know the pilots had a hard time during Desert Storm and I was stationed at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana and half of our A-10 Thunderbolts was sent there to participate in the war. We was glad to see them return home with their pilots and maintenance personnel. The Army units had it the worst there because they was issued old gas masks which was outdated where our people had all new equipment.
I really dont understand why back line units get the newer shit while the army and marines get shit, i got a mask that was used in fucking nam,
Lobbying. It really never made sense that the Airforce got better facilities. The Army and Marines literally fight our wars. You'd think the airforce would be treated like interns. Most air force qualify with their weapons and are expected never to fire them again. But they're the first to get new ones. Sometimes a sidearm.
If you havnt seen the raw footage from that mission I strongly recommend you see it.

I'm not sure he actually dodged six. In the original video when he says something like "that's a 6" he's actually referring to the Russian made SA-6 surface to air missile. At other points you'll hear them reference 2 for the SA-2. The SA-6 is a much more capable missile so it's pretty important to call out which missile has been launched. From what I've learned the SA-6 is a much more maneuverable towards the end of it's range than the SA-2 is.

The soldier on the ground taking heavy fire physically doing anything and everything to survive, the physical stress and mental anxiety. That pilot endured all the stress, pain and anxiety as any soldier on the ground. So proud of our brave American military.
Add the stress of no easy way out and every small maneuver can bury you, it’s gotta be really intense. You can’t stop being a corner and catch your breath, heck you can’t pass out in the wrong orientation without fear of impacting the ground.
@@ApolloTheDerg Intense is a word for sure...
That ice skating uphill line was perfect. Blade approves.
Kudos to Stroke 3, great flying!
And he did it all with great flying because his chaff and flares did not work. Figure this out after he landed.
Thanks for all your footage. and comments.
Man I would really love to see a move for move breakdown of what exactly happened like in Dogfights (the show)
Well fat chance of that, the Stroke 1 and Stroke 4 were shoot down and became POW's so this is a story no one interested in telling in details.
I waited decades for someone to do a movie/series/documentary about the four battles of Savo Island, but because USA only likes clean cookie cuter victories it will never happen.
Operations Room does a decent job of this.
ua-cam.com/video/H8InuaTRKnY/v-deo.html
a movie perhaps
CW Lemoine did a video on this from a fighter pilot's perspective.
I think a highly detailed breakdown as such would be classified. Would help the enemy understand how to better shoot em down.
Pilots are truly courageous individuals. Much respect to them.
Great content as always Alex!
There are very few channels that I binge watch. Sandboxx is one of them. An incredible story and well told! An even more incredible feat to defeat six SAMs in a row. Wow, indeed. Wow!!
There are so many garbage channels out there that 'claim" to have true, accurate, and most importantly none bias information about military platforms. hardware, capabilities, and aviation (current and under development). Sir from a 37-year semi-retired aerospace engineer that worked at four different companies with the best people in the United States...THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE CHANNELS. PLEASE STAY TRUE TO THIS EFFORT, as you seem to do in the most excellent fashion each time to distribute information and entertainment.
Thank You, Sir.

OUTSTANDING VIDEO
Being of high school age at the time, and a USAF dependent (my dad was USAF medical core,) I was well aware of general events going on in Iraq. (The AFB that my family was living on, Scott AFB in IL, was on wartime security lockdown.) A large majority of the U.S. was even unaware that Iraq had (at the time) the third ranked military in the world. As well, the U.S. had not participated in a major conflict since Vietnam, so its (US) military was basically un-tried by that point. These two facts make the victory, (and heroics,) that much more significant.
btw, the first time I ever tried ice skating (while stationed at Scott AFB, IL) my friend had me put on his skates, then he pushed me down a hill. (The grounds all over the base had the freak occurrence of freezing into solid ice. Subsequently, using ice-skates was one of the easiest ways to get around. And so, yeah, I even had to try ice-skating uphill. 😉 )
Amazing work, like always. Thanks for telling us about these heroes.

If you think that this mission was super dangerous, and it was, spare a thought for the crews of the RAF's Tornados who flew unbelievably dangerous low level sorties day in, day out. From reconnaissance flights to Scud hunting to runway denial missions to taking on the powerful Iraqi SEAD...... all at altitudes of between 100-200ft at night, often no handed using their terrain following radar controlled autopilot. 🇬🇧🇺🇸✌✌
Inertial navigation was a groundbreaker
The F111 was a bad ass
Or basically any mission during WWII, which were 100x more dangerous than either.
The tornado missions were super dangerous, but also showed that the ids and it’s systems were super good at what they did. Really the mission plan was the danger in this story
Maybe they should have utilized a couple of EA-6B Prowler from VMAQ-2 The Playboys of the Marine Corps to help with SEAD mission on this mission package.
That pilot flewchell out of that f16 , thank you sir for your service and I'm so glad you made it .
Love to see a interview with this pilot.
That's one hell of Pilot.
That was intense. What badasses.
I don't think he is breathing hard because of stress or he thinks hes gonna get hit..... I think hes breathing hard because of the g's that hes pulling....it's a breathing technique fighter pilots do to help keep blood to the brain if I remember correctly.
And of course a G suit.
Really?! I thought he was out of breathe from walking around carrying that huge set of balls!
It's a little bit of both, man. You're nuts if you don't think he's worried about getting shot down/killed.
This clip is harrowing, what a badass.
Incredible aviator!
some NEEDS to find Major Tulia and have an interview with him about this flight. God that would be such a good fuckin story

When the F14/15/16/18, hit the market, all one heard was how they were over complicated and cost to much! Here is a pilot out maneuvering six pilotless missile which were hell bent on blowing him out of the sky. That alone says a lot about the aircraft, the F15 has never been shot down and you really do not want to mess with the other two! Thank God someone has came to their senses and upgraded these awesome aircraft!
Actually, a F-15 was shot down two days before this battle and another was shot down on the same day as this video.
A perfect air combat record =/= never been shot down.
A salute to you..
scary stuff... how pissed off would u be to find ur chaff and flares not working! 🤬
And people say air force is an easy military branch.
Damn right, just ask the British Tornado pilots who carried out the first low level strikes in the city.
I always assumed being a fighter pilot would be one of the most difficult things to do in the air force, maybe even one of the most difficult things to do in the entire US armed forces.
Wow 😯 Salute
Proud of our guys!
Wow.
Amazing....God Bless those who have put their life n the line to Protect our people.
Can anyone contrast and explain the difference between the encounters like we just watched and those experienced by our pilots over Hanoi? As a kid it seemed to me that combat planes in Vietnam were far more at risk then today’s planes.
Most craft flying then didn't have RWRs and missile launch detectors so you were much more at risk for a missile launch going unnoticed. Plus it was all jungle so the SAM sites were way less noticeable. Overall pretty bad for pilots unlucky enough to go into SAM infested areas without Wild Weasel cover.
@@ktoasty4097 Thx, good information. I knew we put some planes in action that just were not suited for the job in Vietnam. I forget the name of the plane that had only missiles and no automatic guns which was a new addition during Nam. Very short sighted times it seemed. Those pilots must have had kahone’s of titanium with the limitations we made them fight with.
SHOCK and AWE, Shit !
Six missiles. No flares. No chaff. No problem!

Strictly for the purpose of accuracy I find one point often missed yet interesting. Personally I have a strong bias in support of these types of individuals as my dad was also Air Force serving during Vietnam as para rescue. He was diagnosed with ALS likely from agent orange exposure 10 years ago and passed away a few months after finding out. One thing you could say he was ocd about accuracy and honesty. Something like 100% of intentions can be disregard if based on 99% accuracy. His generation was something different for sure. Anyway I thought it worthy to note in later released reports it was shown that the planes countermeasures weren't faulty from detailed inspection but never switched on. High stress, fatigue, adrenaline rollercoaster, etc... I'll just say the fact this wasn't a 2 seat fighter how his balls fit is mathematically impossible.
My old man was a Vietnam era fighter pilot and I'm 100% with you on that.... but yeah knowing him and his buddies, they just expect their balls are big enough and prepare for everything. Stroke3 for sure preformed perfectly under pressure, which is one of those odd things fighter pilots do naturally.
BTW always wanted to be Para Rescue if my eyesight was good enough... oddly both pilots and them need perfect vision.
They didn't fit. His balls were hanging out each side of the plane just flapping in the wind. Can you imagine what his G-suit looked like? I'm sure it was one of a kind.
@@bretbauer7582 well, all AFSOC groups need perfect vision. TACPs obviously need perfect vision, as do Night Stalkers, and a case can be made for PJs and CCPs. SOWTs were the only ones who weren't held to it, funny enough.
They weren't switched on... Come the hell on. Please. I mean wtf man. Bs. Just - so disrespectful. How could you even say that?
Hi there, no disrespect at all-and my cousin died from Agent Orange, so no arguments how horrible it is-but ALS is a genetic disorder that cannot be caused by agent orange…
Hope those F16V will do the same in the future battle of Taiwan.
Missive Respect.
6 shots and no hits? You are damn straight I’d be returning those SAMs back under the International Military Lemon Law! 🍋🤪
I remember seeing this videos a few years ago, dude is an absolute beast. Pulling out some literal Belkan witchcraft with his F16
How often did the chaff and flair defenses fail to deploy as designed, worse yet with no system feedback? This could make for a bad day.
Very rarely, but occasionally things break. Was a quick fix after the flight.
Shit. Good job guys
I'm a girl and I absolutely had to subscribe!
Would make for an interesting animation.
Isn't it interesting how the F-16 was purpose-built to be the ideal dogfighter and yet it is used almost entirely to put bombs on target rather than in the air-superiority role for which it was designed?
F16 was built to be a multi role fighter not an air superiority jet
..?
@@Apathy474 I should have said that it was purpose-designed to the ideal dogfighter. The officers behind it were part of a little group called the Fighter Mafia, and they wanted something small, fast, highly maneuverable, and relatively inexpensive. Of course the top brass didn't want anything to do with any plane that was small & inexpensive. They wanted huge & pricey. They wanted F15s and were only entertaining the idea of the F16 at all because Congress was forcing them to. The original F16 was a purpose designed & built air superiority fighter, and, much to the chagrin of the top brass I'm sure, it was just too damn good of a plane to ignore. Yet, somehow, between winning the trials, being selected as the USAF's newest fighter, and actually going into production it was changed from the light, fast, & deadly dogfighter the Fighter Mafia had created into the larger, heavier, and far more expensive multi-role fighter that we actually got. Be that as it may, underneath all the extra equipment, the F16 is still one of the bet air-to-air fighters ever to take the unfriendly skies. It just happens to also be one of the best ground attackers too.
Still, it's sad to see it never getting to do the main tast for which it was created; KILL ENEMY AIRCRAFT IN AIR-TO-AIR COBMAT, but o there are rare occasions it does get plat a llittlr.
LOL this stressed me out just watching it. That pilot is a legend.

Stroke 3’s mom birthed a flying god.
Iraq might be a long way off the power of the gathered coalition forces but they did have a fairly decent air force and an enormous amount of air defence systems... both AAA and SAM sites... especially around their Capital City, Baghdad.
Were those SAMs guided?
By radar lock, not by an actual person. So yes they are guided but by a computer not a person. In some SAM models a person on the ground can guide them but they are more inaccurate than the computer
I'm gonna stick my neck out, here, and say that there's probably a Wild Weasel jock out there who can top that.

We had the caddy STX and they had Ford tempos. You just being nice
that cause they must had the cheap missles..
33 countries attacked one country which lacked qualitative edge on a scale of 1:10 when compared to coslition’s sophisticated machine.
Its also scary to note that most SAMs have a G limit of 18-20, so the missile coming at you is much more maneuverable and doesn't tire physically. The days of manned combat flights are numbered with ever increasingly sophisticated SAMs.
Amazing
God bless our AIRMAN, been there, loaded that, CREWCHIEF!!
What kind of anti air was being used in Iraq? Was it Russian S 300 or 400’s?
I was debating this topic recently with person who was saying that Baghdad was the best defended city in the World.
NOT EVEN CLOSE! The best anti aircraft systems at that time was Russian S300 and US made "Patriot" missile system.
Saddam Hussein didn't had ether. He had numerically lot of battery's but all of them was technologically inferior. Same goes for armored battalions. US made tanks M1A1 Abrams had twice
the range with their cannons then Russian made T72's that Iraq had.
You can technically have a superior system out there but still not be the heaviest defended city in the world. It has to be integrated properly. One system does not make it inferior or superior and in a lot of times numbers do make a difference when it comes to air defence.
The old SAM are not maneuverable and can be easily jam by electronic warfare aircraft. The old SAM radar are turn on at the last minute to avoid been jam. The SAM radar operators have very little time to lock on the F-16. Therefore, it is not a surprise that F-16 can dodged the SAM.
The above pilot did a damn good, but you might be right. There might be a lot of 'ifs' and 'buts' to this, but considering how rare this sort of thing happened made me think the missiles were not the best or forced to be used in a way that they were not maximized for the task. Again, that pilot was still damn good and more than I or vast majority could ever do. EDIT: I looked it up, the Vietnamese turned off and turned on SAM at the last minute, but Iraqis didn't. They left it on. They did damage and kill 70ish allied aircraft. Lots were A-10s, reconnaissance, but there were some F-15s, F-16s, and F-18s in there. Iraq SAM still might not have been the best, but they were no walk in the part either.
Its the pilot, not the plane
And that's why these guys get to act like rockstars. Who else gets push to the theoretical limits of our environment. There's just no feeling. There probably won't be another conflict in history where drama like this is possible

That was a weapons testing ground for nato.
A question to pose: could the Free world produced cheaply a more effective missile that can work with the s-300 system? Apparently the missiles for it are becoming scarce and Russia is the only source. What kind of improved capability could the West bring to this missile system that a much better price?
You consider yourself a patriot when you have no idea where you’re at and playing Russian roulette with a filled cylinder

From my limited research The first time we went there (Bush sr.) was to liberate Kuwait. Sadam had just taken it over and nato didn't like them controlling all that oil production. Iraqi air defenses were designed by the French and were set to defend the country against Iran. Thus they were not adequate to defend against US. I.e. they were adequate to defend against Iran. Iran is defined as 25 to at very most 30 aircraft at the same time. Defenses around Baghdad were maybe string on paper and strong on video but most were grossly obsolete - only few systems were modern - these incorporated into French system. Thus Baghdad was not the most heavily defended city at all - that would be Moscow and maybe Tel Aviv.
They shot down over 75 aircrafts, my guy.
Why were they targeting oil refineries at the beginning? They should have targeted SAM sites exclusively at the beginning.
