Today we take a closer look at the fan favorite Luna class, which originally only existed in beta canon. The USS Titan would appear onscreen for the first time in the season 1 finale of Lower Decks. Making subsequent apperances in Star Trek Picard.
However this ship is not without controversy: with an unclear and confusing role among the wider fleet, and unusual design features we must once again ask. What Exactly Is The Luna Class? And What Does it Do?

The Luna is a more versatile Akira, and trimmed down Nebula. Starfleet intended it as the heavy-medium long-range explorer jack of all trades. A refreshment for the Nebula, and probably easier to build. The Nebula is actually quite big and personnel intensive for most of the mission sets it has.

Came here to say pretty much this. Take an Akira, trim out the massive hanger, stretch it out, and add some sensors and larger living areas. Now you’ve got an Akira with endurance and science capabilities. She’s not meant to be part of a fleet action, she’s meant to range deep into unexplored space and defend itself if need be. Starfleet doesn’t only fight wars, and they don’t think of war fighting capabilities of ships, for better or worse. In this case I think the analysis is more in the style of a 2370’s Star Fleet Battles universe rather than the canon Star Trek universe.

also think there's a big push to modernize in general. the average age of starfleet ships is a significant liability when dealing with peer adversaries. starfleet has ships that can sustain warp 9.9+ but a fleet can never move faster than a miranda, really limits how they can maneuver. half a dozen sovereigns don't really move the needle on fleet makeup, they need all the roles to be modernized.

I think that the Luna might have been the final stage of Anti Borg Fleet ship. Everything else was simply ships designed to fill roles as quickly as possible. Ships that are tough because they need to be, fast because they have to be, and with bog phasers because they need them. The Luna looks like a late war design optimized and standardized. It may have been commissioned by the tens of thousands... and then the war ended.
it is like the battleships and destroyers and cruisers that were designed at the end of World War 2, were set to be manufactured by the hundreds, and then... were not. many stopped construction halfway and were never completed.
Or perhaps the F-22 from the Cold War of Star Trek's Borg war. the F-22 was designed to fight the Soviet Union and be the best of the best while outnumbered in nuclear hellfire... but that war is not a thing, and the Soviet Union is gone. Now we have the F-35, which takes the cutting edge F-22 tech and just... makes it relevant to modern war against modern enemies.
So, the Luna could be the F-35 multi-role fighter. It is a ship built from the technology and principles of the previous war, but in a single package to do everything well. The Sovereign is the F-22 air-superiority fighter.
So, A single sovereign with a support wing of 3 or 4 Lunas could destroy a cube solo because that is what they are designed to do, but now there are no more borg cubes to solo.

I'd like to give a different approach to discuss: When Voyager returned from the Delta Quadrant and Starfleet got it's hands on the logs and reports from the crew they noticed that a ship like the Nova Class USS Equinox is not quite suited for these long range exploration missions, while the bigger Intrepid Class USS Voyager could perform pretty well although she fell in WAY to many traps set up by other alien races... and Seska...
So they learned from these lessons and designed a new long range exploration cruiser with a tiny bit more firepower but a way more powerfull sensor equipment. I mean "sending" a Nebula Class into the Delta Quadrant would have been far to expensive for Starfleet although it would have been a pretty tough statement in terms of kicking some a**. On the other hand without a supply base to swap the mission pods, that Nebula would have only one configuration to go with.
So let's sum this up and we see that the Luna class is actually a merge of the mission profiles of the Intrepid and Nebula classes. That newly designed pod, that combines the Nebulas AWACS and weapons pods capabilities deals with some of the issues of the Intrepid class, mainly it's sensor arrays where designed to scan anomalies but lack the surveillance aspects. On the other hand the Luna is less expensive to operate and needs fewer personell to get the job done compared to the Nebula.
I don't actually think the Luna class was designed as kind of a Science Destroyer.. it was more like an evolution of the Intrepid, added the capabilities of a Nebula to make her a little tougher.
I just does not make really sense to see the Luna as a competitor to ships like the Akira or Vesta. The Akira is sent to places as a show of force.. I mean nothing tells people to not anger the Federation as good as hundreds of Torpedoes just waiting to be fired in every possible direction (some pictures of the Akira modell even show side facing torpedo launchers.. pure badass)
And when that is STILL not enough... Just send the Prometheus and leave no survivors...
If you need "aggresive scouting" and spotting enemy fleet movements... nothing can beat the Vesta and her Slipstream drive.. Fly in, scan the area and then get out with no one beeing able to catch up. And if she get's into a brawl.. Well.. It's the Vesta, that thing is almost als large as a Sovereign and packs one hell of a punch!
So in my point of view the Luna is an evolution of the Intrepid class. Don't get me wrong the Intrepid is a nice design, but it has some flaws, which the Luna perfectly get's fixed, while keeping her still as economically effective as the Intrepid is due to relatively medium size. I am sure she was designed with fighting the Borg in mind but I doubt Starfleet would send such a ship into a battle when they already have far better suited ships to deal with them

That Nagus Impression was spot on. I could feel Wallace Shawn in the room.
On the subject of the video. (Wall of text, don't bother yourself too hard.)
EW and recon are underappreciated components of Trek Warfare for sure.
I feel New Orleans would make a good EW/Recon ship Change out those modular pods for EW/Sensor units.
I don't feel as though the design of the new fleet, or anti-borg fleet, as it is sometimes called, is so specific to the Borg threat that it suffered against other threats.
Having ships that can brawl, provide fire support, etc is a pretty universal requirement.
The Nova is new, But should be quickly producible so I wouldn't hold that against it, But it is a quite slow ship by 24th century standards. Maximum speed of Warp 8, even if that's the Top sustainable speed and not the absolute maximum, isn't great for a modern Federation ship.
But why not create an Akira Variant or some-such that replaces the Torpedo pod with the Sensor EW capabilites of the Luna's pod?
It's already proven and in service, and they are practically the same size and Vintage (within a decade of each other, the Akira is not a slouch in technical terms and could definitely take on new technology) so I'd have to assume it could take on the capabilities.
Add some additional armour plating to toughen it up, Something which I would hope the Akira has the growth potential to accept and may have even been done over the course of the war.
Of course, Because it's me, I have to mention the Intrepid, also known as the center of my universe.
It is new, Top of the line and packed with bleeding edge technology, including sensors. So I do feel like it could handle the Recon job as well Luna. I don't feel there'd be much of any distinction there.
I don't know how it would do with the electronic warfare side of things, I could see it being refit internally for it. Like removing most of the science labs and decreasing cargo bay space to make room for EW equipment. Maybe it could put that secondary deflector to use for EW stuff?
But under a wartime refit much of that space might have already been taken up by other stuff. Unless it was a Wartime intention to use Intrepid for that role.
Of course Intrepid's other main value as a Recon ship is it's speed. No other ship in Starfleet is listed as having a cruise speed as high as Intrepid's, so it could without doubt outrun anything else on the battlefield. It's compact profile also makes it less noisy than a larger vessel like the Nebula.
I feel it would make an excellent mid-sized Recon ship. But it would perhaps suffer when it came to providing Fleet EW. Which I feel could be covered by the Nebula

Judging by its on-screen appearance in Lower Decks and the back story that's been published on it in books, by yourself and others, my theory is that the Luna class: Titan was a long-range Explorer/fast-attack cruiser. Starfleet has finally re-learned the lesson that the galaxy is very, very dangerous place if you want to keep going into the unknown. It doesn't actually need a gigantic armament, it's real weapon is its speed, manoeuvrability and subspace radio. Seriously, if Riker needs to send out a distress call what turns up is variously nicknamed: 'Daddy's Home,' 'bIjatlh 'e' yImevQo'!' & 'Lloann'mhrahel's ra'khoi!' and it's captain will be the scariest bald guy in history!
The Titan is Riker with warp nacelles! If it could cock up one of them up on something, it would.
Also, could we stop talking about the Space Canoe/Disruptor fodder, Oberth. The damn thing was obsolete in Star Trek III. It has less screen time than some of the kit-bashes at the end of Wolf 359. The NX Enterprise could hang in a fight with the Klingons longer than it!
What was with that Cardassian ship in the picture chasing the Titan, but it's nacelle wings seem to be on backwards? Did the Cardassian monks change the style of their cloaks?
As for the Luna nicking other ships jobs, it's not actually their jobs, these are assignments.
They go where the Admiralty says they're going. Anyway, somehow I don't think anybody's stealing the Intrepid's crown when it comes to extreme long range exploration!

Exploiting flaws in their communication network lead directly to the destruction of at least two of the cubes that attacked Earth -- sending a false order to regenerate in the case of the first, and Picard being able to listen in on their damage control efforts in the second.
They're a hive mind. Disrupting their communications renders them helpless.

I'd love to see a mile long new Enterprise or Starfleet ship. Seems to me like Starfleet was forced to diversify their defensive doctrines by having to face the various forces arrayed against them (Borg, Dominion, Cardasdians, etc...). Whereas Starfleet was used to previously dealing with the Kilngons, Romulans, etc., a standard 'shield doctrine' was sufficient and most Starfleet vessels had little to no armor and an adequate hull structure but excelled at deflector shield technology.
The Borg could still be mostly handled through a strong shield doctrine but inspired the development of using armor to supplement defensive shields. The Dominion forces used polaron based weaponry that easily cut through deflector shields and thus forced Starfleet to enhance development of a fleet using an armor doctrine for defense. Facing the Dominion also spurred the development of a 'Hull' defense doctrine for the larger Starfleet vessels like the Galaxy class. By removing the excess, fluff systems, the wartime Galaxys could tank enormous amounts of damage before suffering critical system damage and hang in pitched battles far longer and required much less maintenance and repair times.
It seems to me like the Luna was one if the 'test bed' designs that toyed with the idea of a 'shield doctrine' version of the Akira. There's probably quite a few ship classes in Starfleet that seem like an overlap of other designs but are, in reality, just a different defense doctrine design. Having a ships with similar roles but different defense doctrines seems like an idea that Starfleet would go for given the diversity of antagonist fleets and unusual phenomena they encounter.

      @venomgeekmedia9886  Рік тому +1

Yeah well when facing the klingons and romulans in the 23rd century starfleet ships were generally heavier and less agile. So worked best in formation. However the cardassians employed rigid formations to compensate for their weaker ships and of course against the borg: formations are a death sentence which lead starfleet to develop ships that were more klingon in design.

The Akira is also, I think, a good post-war starship. It is a huge evaluation ship that could work moving colonists to or away from a colony. It also has a lot of scientific equipment to perform explorations, and it borrows a lot of its design from the Galaxy actually, including its massive shuttle bay. It is like the Intrepid and Akira starships that seem to be between the Golden Age and the Anti-borg Starfleet.
Also, the Vesta seems like it was less designed to be scientific and more to be an anti-starship starship than even the Sovereign. It had phaser cannons, an anti-starship weapon, and a general do-all weapon called phaser arrays. Its armor was more built up than any other ship in the era and was larger than a Sovereign. And its main weapons were quantum torpedoes and transphasic torpedoes. You know, anti-borg torpedoes.
Also, the only know Vesta I know, the USS Aventine, was used more to run interference of hostile parties, investigate possible attacks, conduct dangerous salvage missions in enemy territory, and perform attack missions, especially against the Borg and Breen. In fact, did it ever perform any exploratory missions that were not investigated for possible Breen or Typhon Pact involvement? I am drawing a blank, but I did not read all of the books. The only thing suggested is an explorer was due to the class being called a multi-mission explorer cruiser, which they also call Sovereign class, and it is obviously a battlecruiser (a heavy cruiser that's firepower is close to a battleship or dreadnaught).

In terms of design longevity, the Titan-Prime herself should've lasted at least 75 to 100 years. When we saw the Titan-A in 'Star Trek: Picard' and how apparently parts of that craft were directly constructed from the original Titan. My curiosity is this: What happened to the original Titan that go her so put through the bollocks that she ended up as shipyard-bait...? (ADDENDUM: The same holds true for the Enterprise-E, and the Enterprise-F was still WAAAY too young herself to get cashiered the way we saw - she wasn't even 15 years old yet, best guess.) Hopefully these questions will end up getting properly answered.

My thoughts on the Luna is that with the Borg threat emerging, StarFleet started their new program with Sovereigns, Akiras, etc. More combat oriented ships. However, the Borg are still a big unknown, they are a threat but no one really knows when they will actually attack again. To the Federation the Borg might not actually attack again for another 10, 20, 50 years? So while planning all these combat anti-Borg ships, they didn't want to fully abandon the generalized exploration and science cruiser. But they needed these generalized exploration vessels to be smaller and cheaper than Galaxies and Nebulas, but still bigger and wider role than the Nova; Basically a smaller Galaxy or Nebula without the overkill luxuries and excesses, but still capable of doing the same job.

@@venomgeekmedia9886 exactly I think the Intrepid was an attempt to miniaturize and cram all the Galaxy's equipment and some upgrades into a smaller package. While the Luna is a "lets remove everything we don't need to do the same job as the Galaxy" and put it in a smaller package. So its still capable, but a lot cheaper and not overkill. Plus after the Dominion War and resources free up, there's always the possibility to give them a bit of an upgrade if needed, repackage them for specific roles like electronic warfare, or just phase them out for the next model without too much expense wasted.

It can fight, it can stealth, it can science, it can move fast. It may not be at the peak of any of those capabilities, but the fact that the one ship can do it all is just exceptional. Also, if you take into account the Titan novels, its capacity to support a wildly diverse crew compliment gives it an almost Galaxy-level ability to act as a people-mover/diplomatic vessel in peacetime.

I could see the idea being that your average starfleet ship can handle whatever it is attacked with and whatever it can't handle can be subdued by a close by Oberth or Nebula while the main ship keeps the enemy occupied. Its not till the Dominion arrives that the Federation finds a force that can give its engineers and computers a run for its money and so the Luna is now a needed component of Starfleet battle doctrine.

Both were ways for Starfleet to take the technologies from the Sovereign Class but at a lower cost , with the Akira focusing more on combat and the Luna focusing more on Exploration (with elements pulled from Voyager's lessons learned). Basically scaling the Sovereign down to, say 90% of the effective power, but at 78% of the cost in resources. Cheaper and easier to produce but still with the teeth.

Late comment but I personally think the Luna was built to be the next generation of long period exploration and scientific discovery ships into the late 24th and early 25th Century. It's design shows lessons and inspiration from the Intrepid and Sovereign classes and to me seems to be the next step in replacing the Intrepid and Galaxy classes in that role. It's very clear the Intrepid while very advanced and very fast didn't have the firepower and versatility of other ships during and after the Dominion war. The Sovereign and Akira classes for example could compete in terms of speed and was on par in terms of technology but having more firepower and more versatility. While the Enterprise-E is the flagship and a Sovereign class, it clearly isn't as well suited to exploration and scientific study other classes. It certainly was fine at it and a lot of thought of this was out into its design but i'd argue it definately wasn't as well suited for long term deep space studies that requires more sophisticated labs and facilites that the Intrepid or even the Galaxy class had. In addition to that the Sovereign seems to have much smaller diplomatic facilities and seems a little more rustic internally compared to a Galaxy or Intrepid. While the facillites are not bad they are just "good enough" for that purpose. The Sovereign was essentially a battlecruiser or heavy crusier equipt and designed for a time where a lot of conflict was expected and prepared for, but had to make concessions in terms of other areas in order to be up to par and meet that demand.

suspect there's a desire to modernize in general. the average fleet age is a huge liability against peer adversaries; a fleet's top speed is a miranda's top speed. the federation had ships that could sustain warp 9.9+ during the dominion war but not enough to fill out a fleet. if such ships had been available in sufficient number it would have taken far more resources for the dominion to deter raids.
