    I owned a VW Phaeton W12 from 2010 to 2014.
The car was bought with 110'000 km and sold with 180'000 km.
It was expensive to own. Very expensive!
Ironically, a Volkswagen turned out to be the most expensive car I have owned to this day.
Here's the breakdown of all the costs associated with owning the car:
    Date km Item Cost

Turns out there was a reason, why a car that cost CHF 220'000.- new was sold for just CHF 21'000 after just 5 years and 110'000 km - It's a nightmare to own.

I’ve had a Mercedes S Class and a BMW 5 Series as well as two Volvos in the past. The Volvos weren’t nearly as costly to own as the Mercedes or BMW but you might want to try a Lexus. Though not quite as tightly wound a sport sedan they are excellent as luxury sedans s and there is a rewarding value to that and all that I can tell you is that the ultimate luxury is a car that works every day, never leaves you stranded ever, and that you don’t have to think about. You never go to bed at night with a knot in your stomach upset that your car is driving you to distraction instead of your destination. The greatest luxury is peace of mind. So far only two batteries a set of tires a set of brakes in nine years of ownership. The dealership gives me a choice of picking my car up and dropping off a loaner car at my home for maintenance service and bring it back later to me at work or I can go to the dealership. If I go to the dealership they have an espresso bar, stenographers and neck massagers. Life doesn’t get much better.
I thought that my S Class would have been my worst gold digger car but the BMW was even worse.

lol! I followed along very entertaining!
I bought a 2003 Ford F-150 with a 4.2 liter v6, and a 5 speed stick new in January 2003. I still have it. Primary vehicle, so its not a weekend hauler. 270,000 miles (435,000km) later. We are still good.
    purchase: $17,000.00
    fuel: $41,293
    oil changes: $2,700.00
    Tires: $3,200.00 (80k miles, 125k miles, 200k miles)
    Clutch: $800.00
    Slave cylinder: $300.00
rear main seal: $200,00 ( this was the problem, but I replaced the clutch and slave cylinder because we dug into it that far at 190k miles)
    Shocks at 80k miles $750.00
Front bushings and shocks at 175k miles $1700 (driveway job, with followup at an alignment shop)
    Brake pads: $200.00
front brake rotors $60.00 (when I did the front end work)
Intake plenum isolator bolts, $95.00 (they were originally made with a rubber that didn't care for ethanol)
    Serpentine belts $50.00
    Spark plugs $100.00
vacuum hose spool. $50.00 ( and I still have most of the spool)
radiator hoses at 200k miles $85.00
    Insurance $13,600.00
    grand total of $82,183
    $0.304/mile
so in total, I suppose I spent more than you... but for admittedly drastically different result.
...and if we are to be fair, the result has not yet been finalized. I'm still loving it! Over 17 years, she just keeps aging like a fine truck.

    • @nasarazam
      @nasarazam 4 роки тому

@@EzerEben I bought it used with 192K miles on it. It is a 2005. Any 15 year old car will have it's share of issues. "Reliable" does not mean it is "Brand new". You always look it relative to other Luxury cars that are 15 years old. My front passenger side door lock actuator does not work and the telescoping steering is not working (tilt works). If you are handy with maintenance, you will save a lot. I cannot turn on a wrench and has to get everything done. Changing spark plugs on this one is a lot easier than on a Camry or ES300/350. Brake pads changing is easiest from what I heard/saw. However, the parts are expensive. One of my Mufflers were rusted. Instead of using the genuine Lexus Muffles for $550, I used Walker one for $300. It does not break down often like German cars, but when it does, parts are expensive. Overall, it is a very good car and drives very smooth with minimum road noise. I am older person and like soft smooth ride. Having said that, i somehow misses seeing the long hood and the start of W126 :)
Navigation on LS430 sucks! BTW with over 193K miles, Transmission fluid has never been flushed or changed and it shifts perfectly ! All windows, sunroof, seats, A/C , folding side mirrors, CD and Cassatte Tape works. Yes, I use Cassate tapes :)

This car is for DIYers and not for dealership maintenance. The air strut should have been rebuilt because all that goes bad is the o-rings to the air bladder. I could go on and on. A lot of ( or most?) premium cars are built using parts which are similar quality (if not often the same items) as more basic models. A rubber hose on a Focus is made out of more or less the same constituent rubber as that of a McLaren. There are more parts to go wrong and the economies of scale mean that any unique part has to cost more.

Not saying it was problem free, had to replace a window motor, clutch hydraulics, recharge the a/c, fuel pump, brakes all around, new shocks, new control arms, new power antenna. Still it was less than $2000 for all those repairs. Not bad for a 20+ year old daily driver. Only thing I didn't like was its drinking problem, 18mpg with high test fuel gets to be rather pricey.

Hi, Good video but it sounds like Switzerland is a very expensive place to live, Question, when you say "service" what does that mean? What service could possibly cost over $3000.00? In total you gave a dealer almost $9000.00 for "service" ?? What could they possibly do to your car for that kind of money? Oil? I have had many cars over the years, many, many and I would never take a car to a dealer for a "service" That simply means take my money and give me nothing for it. Also brakes, I checked, I can buy after market rotors for a '05 Phaeton a bit over $100.00 each, complete front rotors, pads sensors, clips and whatever else is needed $350.00, so two hours or less at a shop and that $1500 brake service would be less than $500. Do it yourself if able and, well $350. I have no doubt this car is expensive to maintain but most of these costs are incurred from dealers stealing from you. A wiper motor $400 bucks, Upper control arms are less than $50 each and its 45 minutes to put them in so how did it cost $1500??? At the end of the day I see nothing that would cost any more than any other car really except for the shock but Mercedes and most other high end cars are pretty much the same. I have several luxury brand cars (Mercedes) and the only way to have these is to maintain yourself, you simply cannot take to the dealer for anything as they will bleed you dry because if it's an expensive car they will charge accordingly. In fact it sounds like Swiss dealers are as crooked as the Canadian ones.

Switzerland is expensive and so are OEM parts. Sure, you can save by buying 3rd party but what quality will you get and how long will those parts last?
Hourly rates are between CHF 100.- at an indy in the middle of nowhere and can go well over CHF 200.- at a main dealer in an affluent area. A scheduled maintenance alone will easily take 2.5 hours and cost CHF 300.- in work alone.
      By the way: upper control arms were CHF 786.24 (196.56 each), the 2 wiper assemblies (3D1 955 602 A and 3D1 955 601 A) were CHF 491.40.
There are different braking systems on the Phaeton W12 depending on region and specification. The EU spec W12 can have a larger brake than the US W12 (because of Germany and the higher speed you can drive there). Mine equipped with the larger 365mm 8-piston setup. All the cheap aftermarket rotors are for the smaller 360mm brake and are not compatible with the 365mm brake. So, no, to this day there are no cheap aftermarket rotors for the EU-spec Phaeton W12 with the 8-piston 365mm brake. Also, aftermarket rotors in Switzerland are only legal if they come with a certificate issued by a sanctioned body within Switzerland. That makes it even harder to go aftermarket.

    • @cph3459
      @cph3459 4 роки тому +1

@@swisscarguy All makes sense but 200 CHF @ 2.5 is 500 CHF. Still another 2500 CHF to account for. I'm not sure about over there but over here dealers will install aftermarket parts at the dealer level. Of course you will pay a fortune for them as anything at a dealer. The parts I use are aftermarket but generally are OEM quality or better. Just because your parts come from a dealer doesn't mean they are "the best available" because they simply are not. For example oil, You can buy VW oil at a dealer and pay 3-4 times more for the fancy grey and blue bottle. Is it the best oil? I seriously doubt it. VW puts out a tender for oil and will buy it from any third world supplier they can get it from for the cheapest price as long as it meets MINIMUM standards. Parts are the same, Auto manufacturers make more on selling over priced parts and servicing then they ever make on selling the car.

The biggest issue I encountered was a check engine light which turned out to be the P2020 error code and got quoted 500 Euro to have my intake manifold replaced, but found there is an easier fix for this with a 15€ part. Now one of my door locks is not working, but this is a common VW problem there are plenty of tutorials online on how to deal with it. My current impression is that if you go for one of the simpler engines, make sure to regular maintenance and do some DIY where you can, then it isn't the money sink it is made out to be.
