- After years of persistence, Eureka City Schools has given me permission to film the old EHS swimming pool which has been closed since 2009. The pool, gym and courts will eventually be replaced with a state-of-the-art sports complex. A special thanks to Paul Ziegler, Charley Batini & Eureka City School for making this video possible.

This is so wild I would always try to look in there when I went to eureka high. When you showed the paint chips coming off in that back room I gasped out loud, big yikes.
Honestly it didn't look too terribly bad in there considering how long it's been abandoned. I wonder how much it would cost to repair
I swam in there for PE the last year it was open. God, it feels like yesterday...
I feel ya. Next year will be my 20 year reunion at EHS and it feels like I kinda just graduated lol
swam in that pool 1970-1971 senior yr
I would love to see photos of the pool from those days
Thank you for filming this.
Of course! I was honored to have this rare opportunity 🙏
I swam on the swim team in the late 50s and early 60's. I was there almost everyday. We did exercises on the hard tile floor. Also I remember having to walk through the awful Hexol pool before entering the pool area. I can sill smell it!.
I apologize for the buzzing. There was some old machinery nearby giving out some audio bursts
Insane the memories from that place! Probably the same water from the last time I was in it hahaha. All the same junk is still piled around too and the ceiling looks exactly the same 😅
Many PE classes and Saturday swim sessions spent in that pool. 10cents got you and hour of swimming.
Spent a lot of time there with the swim team and water polo team, 1970! Shame it wasn't kept up or renovated.
I went to Eureka High in 1976-1977 and during PE swimming was a requirement. The coach was a guy named Dick Renfro. I remember it use to have a high diving board along with the regular ones. I can still smell the high chlorine in the warm moist and in there.
Why was it closed
I believe it to be structural damage and a huge leak
I remember hearing that it started leaking and there was water on the field below or something like that. I read further that the heater had broken and would be too much to fix, so they shut it down. There were also new drainage regulations that would have required an upgrade to the system, approximately $10 million. We were all devastated that we had to go to Arcata just to go swimming
I spent many hours in that pool . Good times for sure. Thanks for sharing.
I wish I had spent more time there. Glad you appreciate the footage
