Easier is probably my favourite track on the album for the exact reason you said, its the opposite of romantic (both literally and technically). He's saying that his feelings for this girl only exist because being with her in his mind is better than the hurt of being alone especially because all he can do is think of how easy it was when he was with her. It's supposed to be almost a little uneasy or mean, you arent supposed to feel bad for him, you're supposed to feel what hes feeling and the lofi/distant vocal mixing really adds to that.
