It was great! Some people applauded after the first movement, and then the conductor stopped and said "As much as we love the applause, this is very much a symphony of the night, and if we could just keep it shrouded in darkness, no one will complain if you applaud four times as much at the end," which is basically exactly what happened. A wonderful performance by Sir Simon Rattle and the LSO.
It’s not a hot take or anything, but the Finale of the Resurrection Symphony was a life changing experience. I saw it a couple months ago when my local orchestra performed it and I remember sitting at the far back of the music hall with my friends and all of us just being completely speechless at the end of it all.
I have gone to it just yesterday. The Finale left me on the verge of tears of overwhelment, the girl next to me was actually crying. The artistic director of the orchestra said in a podcast that he wishes everyone to have gone to a Mahler 2 concert at least once in their lives and I wholeheartedly agree
I envy you! Everytime I hear the finale of that symphony, I end up shaken to tears, and I've never heard it in person! I will not allow myself die without hearing that symphony first in person, it really changed my life.
I have a hard time with Mahler 9 (except for maybe the middle movements in isolation). that's a once every 5 years or so piece and I almost only will hear it live.
@@BigAl72ZGE I haven't heard it live yet, but every time I've heard a recording of it, I needed 20 minutes or so to just sit in silence afterwards. It's an incredibly emotional piece, and I'd love to hear it live, but I can't imagine having to just get up and act normally a minute after its finished. ua-cam.com/video/udhHFt--10Q/v-deo.html This was the first one I heard, and the audience did give it about 2 and a half minutes before applauding, mostly because Abbado didn't lower his baton or even move until then.
god, at first I was thinking "meh I don't know much about mahler, it's ok", then as it went on and reached the end I started to realize how much I was enjoying I, I never realized it till it was over.
One of my favorite composers and one of my favorite movies, this couldn't be more perfect, it must feel epic to listen to Mahler in space, it feels like the perfect soundtrack for an epic movie, sci-fi or a lifetime.
On Saturday I went to a performance of Mahler 2 at the NYC Phil. It was Jaap van Zweden's last ticketed concert which made it even more special. I had listened to Malher 2 SOOO MANY TIMES. The finale has just always captivated me, the conductors get into it which showed to me very early on it was a special piece. By the end, I was reduced to sobs. I did not want it to be over, it was so beautiful, I did not want it to end. But because I knew the piece, I knew the end had arrived. Malher allows veteran listeners to see quirks in the score, for instance the starting part to the finale is repeated earlier in the piece reminding you of the fact the end is coming. It evoked emotions I cannot describe, and probably will not feel again until something as emotional like that happens to me again. Just some thoughts. I love Malher.
For the emotions I feel listening, I can't decide if I prefer Mahler or Wagner... Elsa's procession to the Cathedral brings me to tears each time I listen to it and when I play it
Yes !!! Elsa’s procession to the cathedral will always hold top spot for me. Played it in the youth section of the Black Dyke brass band, with 100 other musicians on stage. That much brass at the end, good lord. Oh, and an organ. Chills to this day.
Mahler’s Resurrection symphony actually made me sob like a baby the first time I heard it. The message of “Be strong and don’t give up” paired with the music really resonates with me.
The build up of the cluster of emotions here is just incredible. The next bit is just the full explosion of all the emotions stumbled together. Beautiful piece 10/10 would recommend
Me that just wants to hear one movement for the good feels, but end up listening to the whole symphony with a see tears coming out of eyes, again changed by the same symphonies im listening to since i discovered them.
Me with family streaming Mahler's 3rd on mobile data buffering right before the cymbal climax; very relatable. Thankfully it wasn't the cymbal climax and played fine afterwards.
This is the finale of Number 3 and you cannot find a more emotionally beautiful piece of music. I comes at the end of a 1 hour and 40 minute journey of emotions and the end is amazing.
I agree with almost everyone's choices of Mahler passages which affect them the most, as I can find at least one point in every one of his symphonic works which brings me to tears... but no love for the "Chorus Mysticus" from Mahler's 8th?!?
Much love from me! I have listened to the 8th and especially the chorus mysticus way over 30 times in the last year alone. It so inspiring and otherwordly. If you haven't yet, I'd recommend to listen to the recording of Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Orchestra. I have not found another recording were the organ hits so F**KING hard in the end, it really makes the ground shake.
I agree. There's also the adagio from the fourth symphony (this E major is just divine) and Gorecki's second symphony (if your ears are too sensitive, go directly to the second part, the symphony is short but the first part is pretty special).
This is the climactic return of Mahler's turn motif. It was first introduced in the 2nd symphony, IV movement, with "Much rather would I in heaven be." You can hear a sense of relenting, finally yielding and giving in.
Heavenly too, yes. Also the 4th, 4th movement. So delicate and fragile. »Kein Musik ist ja nicht auf Erden, die uns'rer verglichen kann werden«. Subtle, tender and like behind an angelic veil. I could go on. It's beautiful.
Great choice here, but there's so many other moments where this could just as easily apply, too. The finale of the 9th. The ending of Das Lied. Many moments of the 2nd. etc.
Indeed- I tend to agree with his biographer De LA Grange: There may be music just as beautiful and powerful as the finale of Mahler's 9th but no one has written more beautiful and powerful music
Not just classical music aficionados. I've seen worse with other topics. The only annoying aspect of classical music comments are those who always feel the need to compare conductors and who they think is the best - they're usually all wrong.
It is. But he didn't live enough time do finish his 10th symphony. Mahler is known for his mastery on composing marvellous slow movements for his works, but his first movement to the 9th symphony has a supernatural feeling as after-life beings had announced his last days on Earth. I insist: Mahler was giving us his farwells when he composed the first movement of his 9th symphony.
Listen to Karel Ancerl's version of that movement, you can cry whilst marvelling at the extraordinary climaxes he achieves and the unreal high string playing.
I don’t know the name of the actual original song, but the one that makes me feel the most is the "Civ 5 OST Europe-Hidden Forces" A game that uses a classical song
Ndie se ha atrevido a expresar las emociones más violentas y profundas del hombre que el gran Mahler. Escuchen por favor la sexta sinfonía. Es estremecedora.

As funny as this is, it would have been more appropriate to use the final movement of the 10th Symphony (arr. Cooke), as that magpie Hans Zimmer repeatedly rips it off in his score for Interstellar.
Mahler's Third Symphony, final movement,"What Love Tells Me." Part of the opening phrase reminds many listeners of the old WW2 era song, "I'll Be Seeing You."
TBH, as much as I like Mahler's 3rd (not my favorite, and I actually like the 1st movement more), there are other Mahler finales which cause me to react more emotionally.
The conductor of the orchestra is Leonard Bernstein, famous lecturer and a great friend of music. He popularised Mahlers music by releasing lectures about Mahler, which you can watch on UA-cam (highly recommended). And yes he is unfortunately dead.
Mahler's symphonies, especially number 7, have given me emotions I haven't even had before.
I love the Nachtmusik I so much.
