A couple of weeks ago, my sister in law complimented my hair. I have long healthy natural hair. She kept talking about how long and curly it was. I have tighter curls and my hair type is 3c/4a but it appears looser now that it’s longer. My sister in law said that her hair was very dry and it’s difficult to deal with. I told her no it’s not difficult to deal with, you just need to moisturize and take care of your hair. She asked me how I took care of my hair and I told her my hair routine and products. I wash and condition once a week, detangle, and braid it into 4 braids. I take it down after 5 days and wear it down for two days before rebraiding it on wash day. I also let her know that products don’t make your hair grow. It’s having a consistent routine that helps you grow healthy hair. I also showed her natural hair UA-camrs I follow on UA-cam which helped me learn how to take care of my hair. She told me it’s “ too much work “. My sister in law spends HOURS installing her weave, blow drying and straightening her hair, and braiding her hair with extensions like box braids but taking care of her natural hair is “too much work.” I don’t understand why so many black women think this way.
it's not too much work for her, it's too much authenticity. i'm an actual lazy natural and you will not catch me sitting for hours to install anything by myself. people who use that rhetoric are literally doing 3x more than i am. it's about self hate
I like wearing braids thats the only style I'll do but, I like wearing my natural hair, but I'm learning to taking care of my hair. By washing, conditioning, oil and using products to moisturize my hair and even asking my stylist how can I take care of my hair because she's been giving me good advice, since she's been in the business for awhile.
My hair routine is basically the same as yours, and my mom's reaction is pretty much the same as your sister's. I know for a fact her hair is more time, money, and effort than mine. Whenever we go on vacation, she tries to pressure me into getting my hair braided because "wouldn't I prefer if my hair was easy to take care of on vacation?" My hair is already easy to take care of. I don't spend an arm and a leg to maintain my hair the way she does every time she buys a new wig/weave/hair pack and goes to the hair salon. I have three hair products and I never worry about what my hair is like "between styles."
black women really need to stop going to salons and do their own hair. It's sad the way they get treated by so called hair stylist. All the horror stories going around and I have a few myself..Not worth it. Put these unprofessional money hungry people out of business or keep dealing with the abuse..
Many comments under these posts were saying how they preferred going to Dominican or White owned salons because you get treated better and get fairer prices. That's crazy.
As an afro-german I had a lot of moments where people came to me with this assumption that I hate my hair. One guy at work asked me if it is difficult to do my hair after I came with an afro to work and I said no. I accept my hair in its natural state. People pointed out when I went to school that I missed a strand that wasn't coily. Like I know my hair won't be all coily everywhere, because my hair is not artificial. It is my natural hair in its natural state with its imperfections!❤

@@BabyDoll-xx9rk I agree she shouldn't have used the word peasants esp. if her goal is to get us to love our hair, lol. But I do agree with her overall view. If someone complained to you all the time about something without putting in the effort to figure out how to make it better, you would be annoyed too, rt?

These days some of these so called stylist are totally Pathetic n their Prices are Ludacris. Learn your hair, do your own hair. Save your hair from their dangerous hands😮😢
Sometimes you need to see a beautiful example to get you to embrace your hair. I remember in college seeing a girl with her fro out. It was kind of short and had lighter tips and I thought she was so cool! She owned it and it inspired me. Now I keep my hair a little shorter for a similar style. Mini twists inspired me too. Natural hair looks good on everyone. Sometimes you need to find the cut/style that works for you.
@@whenyouwishuponastar6643 my shift was my sister describing the beautiful afro of a woman she'd seen in church that day. And from that moment I wanted to be that woman. A woman I never met. 😂
See that is true but the hate runs soooo deep that they don’t even want to see anything similar. I had a friend, call my hair all kinds of things and dropped her immediately bc my hair was always done in an afro or twist or twist out but if it wasn’t a wig or weave she thought it wasn’t done and didn’t want to see it. She fr did not understand how I could love and wear my hair like that
Another reason why black women hate their hair is because they try to make it into something it isn't, it won't act like looser curls, but you can straighten it. Accept it for what it is, and that's when it becomes your crown. Weird analogy I know but, you will definitely get tired of forcing a lion to eat grass. Learn how YOUR hair works. When I learnt that I low-key started to love my hair, once you accept that it's special and requires you to care more about it, it pays you back. Also, black hair should not be THAT high maintenance, if your hair isn't last your shoulders then you shouldn't be spending multiple hours infront of a mirror, that makes sense as to why we think it's a hustle. Put in a protective style-- it's resting place-- and keep it pushing. Most growth rates are genetic and stuff, but the reason it grows slow is cause you just break it off. I accidentally cut my hair all the way to my ears because I forgot my hair grew, one protective hair style later and it's past my shoulders again. Your hair does grow! I'd even take it a step further and say it grows at the same rate as everyone else's but while someone combs their hair with a narrow tooth comb, you takeout months worth of growth, that is the difference.
@@Neo_Satedoriiii I also find it funny how they accept that they have to spend hours upon hours to lay their lace wigs (and it still looks a mess in 2.5 minutes) but throw in the towel if caring for their hair takes more than 30 mins.
Cf course the whole thing is less about the actual hair and more about the way people feel about themselves. This misinformation out there is wild. When they start complaining I feel like screaming ALL types of hair need special care to look good and even more to look fantastic!
I literally got up when a african lady tried to comb my beautiful thick hair with a rat tail I can still see her asking what’s wrong walking to my car😂
I know! And the way she held the flat iron on the middle of the hair while she dragged that fine tooth comb through the ends. That woman should be sued. The evidence is right there!
I don’t have a problem with braiders expecting you to wash and blow out bc braiders aren’t licensed stylist and can get in trouble if they wash your hair bc they haven’t gone to school for it but being mad that thick natural hair is thick and natural even after a blow out is crazy and it’s even crazier to call your self a braiders if you can’t even braid natural hair if it’s not bone straight 😐👎🏾
OMG, who raised these human beings!!?? She wouldn't take the wig off even when she was having a medical emergency!? That says A LOT. That's scary! I'm so sick about that...
Exactly! It's ok to complain about your hair, everyone does, all races included. But a lot of us know that when it comes to black woman, hair is a touchy subject and the trauma runs deep. No other woman is making entire posts and video about how they hate their hair patterns. No other ethnicity developed toxic products and toxic hair extensions to hide their hair. It's ok to complain from time to time, but it's also time to face the self hate and realise that complaining isn't going to change your hair pattern either lol
it literally makes no sense that braiders nowadays act like they cannot braid our natural hair and its natural state. braiding is a traditional practice that we have been doing since long before relaxers. so it doesn't make any sense that they wouldn't be able to braid her hair without us having to panini press it first. also it's much better to braid natural hair when it's damp, but I feel like many people aren't ready for that. It will look a lot better too, than blown out stretched hair that will be fighting for its life to stay that way once it comes it contact with the tinest bit of humidity.
@@LethalLemonLime as much as I can do different types of twists, I can't braid well, and that's why I prefer to braid my own hair when it's stretched. But as a professional, requiring a blow out or silk press to braid is wild. These are styles on their own. What do you mean I have to do them before I can style my hair? Just go home.
This is so accurate. I was natural for 4 years before I moved to the US. In that time, I never used heat on my hair. Not once, and I got all kinds of braids because I have always been a braids girl. However, since I moved here, every single braider I have encountered requires blown out hair. EVERYONE. It’s insane. Detangling my hair should be enough but I have to damage my hair with heat to get braids now. I’m so sick of it.
Trauma bonding can feel like a release especially when you are constantly gaslight but that type of trauma bonding provides no possible path to later healing

Your video has so much truth to it! we need to denormalize hating on 4c hair. The problem is not with our hair; it is with our knowledge. Black, natural hair is so easy to take care of if you just have the wisdom and knowledge of how to take care of it! and yes, I'm talking about 4C hair too. 4C hair is no exception!
The people who complain and hate their hair are not a part of the natural hair love community. Let them do what they want until they go bald, just keep uplifting those who do not complain and hate on their hair. Natural hair is beyond gorgeous and powerful and unique. ❤❤

If the stylist wears tons of wigs I’m not booking. If the stylist talks bad about natural hair and certain textures I’m not booking. That tells you everything you need to know.
It wouldn’t take so much “maintenance” if our hair was accepted in our current society in its natural state. Most of that “maintenance” is trying to make our hair look as “presentable” as possible. We’ve got it in our heads that having undefined or Afro style hair doesn’t look “presentable” and so we will spend hours using curl defining creams and gels or whatever will make our hair stay down in order to not look “crazy”. It’s like a heart attack to some to think of actually washing one’s hair…and going 🤣 nothing in between. Not styling and leaving to set and dry.
We also don’t live in a world that accommodates nuance either. Afro type hair does in fact require more care. That’s not a bad thing at all, it’s just different. But we don’t live in a world where people can be given the time (working schedule etc) resources or knowledge to look after our hair as it needs to be properly cared for. Natural hair communities (type 3 included) don’t get to have a “bad hair day” or any day off where it comes to hair care. I’m sure that most definitely factors in to the constant tiredness and negative attitude surrounding our hair. There’s no “sorry I’m late and my hair is still wet, but I made it to work!” Narrative.
@@sarahgardiner4929 I will have to disagree (respectfully of course)! ¨We’ve got it in our heads that having undefined or Afro style hair doesn’t look “presentable” and so we will spend hours using curl defining creams and gels or whatever will make our hair stay down in order to not look “crazy´¨- I fully agree with you here; I believe people´s mentalities are whats making natural hair difficult for them, not the hair itself. However, society would accept our natural hair if WE wore it, just like back then with the Black Panthers and black empowerment that has been diluted somewhat today. (Knowledge on how to take care of afro kinky hair has been found a long time ago, people would just rather do trends). We have to start understanding that WE create the standard of what is presentable for our physical features, not society. I also disagree on the bad hair day part. We can have bad hair days and we have them all the time. We often put our hair into buns or cover it with head wraps/scarves on bad hair days. Our hair is truly not as hard as we make it seem, its our mindset that is holding us back. It's just so deep-rooted and normalized that it is hard for many to see it, and that is what many people such as this channel creator are trying to say to people. Sorry for the long rant lol.
@@highdog943 not at all. I like the thoughts you presented! We do care a lot about doing trends and setting standards that don’t reflect our actual hair care needs (if I understood your point correctly). And I semi-agree on the bad hair day point you made. Despite putting our hair into a bun or head wrap/scarf, there’s still a measure of “maintenance” beyond just stepping outside that would be given to those with looser hair types. It’s not like we can walk out with our hair still dripping wet after a wash day for example to dry as the day goes on (something I see a lot of from looser hair types). Another example (I know this is minor) but the obsession with “laid edges”. My point was more to do with, having to always look or make sure we are being perceived as “put together” (more than the average hair type) and not so much as it pertains to how one manages or actually styles out a “bad hair day” (if that makes sense)? Those ways of styling a “bad hair day” still push out this notion of “put it away” altogether. Or you’re making it a more “palatable” bad hair day for everyone else to view. But I guess you could argue that ties into more of a pressure on women as a whole to maintain a certain look than just those with Afro type hair perhaps? I may not have explained my point very well haha. Either way I hope I’m not coming across argumentative or shutting your point down. These videos open up conversations for a reason and we’re still a long way away from giving space for the best ways that everyone with natural hair can find the space to exist without high manipulation to our hair on a consistent basis.
@@sarahgardiner4929 Now that you´ve clarified more on the bad hair day part, I can definitely see where you´re coming from more and I agree with you. I even saw a girl at my school with looser curls rewetting her hair on purpose, almost like a style. I definitely also agree with your point about looking more put together and laid edges being a prime example of that. It really does seem like an expectation to do something with our hair that other hair types don´t have to do for the sake of presentability. I didn´t take your comment as shutting me down at all! I´m really glad to have had this discussion with you and you´re totally right in your last sentence!

Omgosh people need some self confidence, that's exactly how I felt about my hair when I hated myself. That's all changed when Jesus saved me and realized that I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
As for me I absolutely love my natural 4c hair and wouldn’t wish to have anything else. Some of you are just wild with these public outcries. Please, just because you haven’t found something that works for you doesn’t mean you have to come online and project your insecurities. 4c hair is hard to do when you are trying to make it look like a texture it is not. What so hard about waking up spraying it with water fluffing it in a cute fro and going on about your day? These chicks just mad because their 2 hour twist outs are not defined loose silky curls 🙄
Only we can change the beauty standard for ourselves . Hard to see 4c hair on Netflix if so many of us are afraid to wear it outside . Hoping we all pour more love into self .
Natural hair is not hard to take care of. Hair is hair no matter the texture and it requires the same amount of maintenance as any other hair type. Shrinkage is HEALTHY and BEAUTIFUL. You don’t need to follow 50 steps routines or do a 48 hour wash day.
Yep, the most time it takes for me to do my hair is a braid take-down. Even then I know I could move much faster because I take my sweet time lol Some of these ladies be doing their hair like it´s a Tiktok anti-aging routine😂
Natural hair is not hard to take care yet it barely grows long for alot of black women, you have to sleep with a bonnet, you have to braid your hair before going to bed, you have to detangle it by hands (or else you are too rough according to multiple experts), you have to buy specific hair products, you cant use too much heat, you cant put your hair in a quick bun or ponytail, you have to be gentle with your hair, anything makes it break…. Like can you guys atleast be honest, it is work and not everyone wants to deal with that. Thats completly fine.

I'm Nigerian, too and you know before i came abroad I didn't understand why people didn't like their hair because my mother taught us to love our hair, no matter what you do to it. She was obsessed with our hair, in a good way so i love my hair. When we went to school every month or so, the teachers knew we would bring a new vibrant hairstyle 😅 so much so they started asking us who did me and my sister' hair so i wear my hair anyhow i want and people are amazed, it feel strange to be amazed that i wear my hair out and made well 😂
I love that your mother passed down the appreciation and admiration for black features that all our little black children deserve!! She did an amazing job!
I love that omg 😂😂 I always hear stories of Nigerians or Africans traveling there and joining the 'my hair is ugly' crusade. That's why it's good to instill self love and acceptance in your kids from a very young age. That way they never want what's not theirs and only seek to make themselves better, not completely change. ❤️
You told the truth! As for me, I have learned to accept, love and cherish my 4C hair, and I do my hair myself, and it has grown so long! I have not gone to salons for so many years and I have no regrets, because hairdressers always mishandled my hair. I will not tell other BW what to do with their hair, but the way I carry myself and my hair, I hope to lead by example.
Honestly, I've gotten my hair straightened numerous times and I usually go to the Dominicans they treat me hair extremely poor, and they yank and pull my hair out like its nothing. I've usually only gone because of pressure from my family but I'm now starting to take care of my own hair. I believe once you actually start to truly manage your hair after a few months it becomes easier. The thing is us black women weren't raised doing our natural hair in a loving way so now we complain about it as adults and past that onto our daughters.

Everything was accurate in this video. Very few black hair stylist actually like Afro textured hair or know how to properly care for it. I’ve also had my hair messed up damaged by stylist smh. So it’s in our best interest to learn how to care for our hair. The UA-camr Afrikanhairgod is really good and knowledgeable in afro hair I’ve been a sub for many years. I’ve learned a lot from watching him on how to better care for my hair he knows his stuff.

I love my hair so much. It truly saddens me that so many of us don’t enjoy their own hair. I always get compliments about my hair. I just wish that it was more normalized.
You took the words out of my mouth, and I’m saying this as someone who gets frustrated with her hair whenever she has to take out her protective styles. I understand why the majority of black women hate their hair, and it’s because of years of Eurocentric beauty standards being forced on them. Adding to the trauma is their own mothers and grandmothers never taking care of their own hair. But after a while, you have to learn how to love your hair. I’m still trying to love mine.
Loving my hair took years. started as a child my mother couldn't handle my hair so it was straightened, but as time went i went natural then full dreads locs now i see the true beauty of my hair an i love it. I only do protective styles for fun an I'm my own hairdresser 🎉🎉❤
Ik I don’t have the tightest curls but I have 3c-4a hair and I remember I hated it so much and begged my mom to let me relax it so she finally gave in and I got a keratin treatment then I hated how loose it was and wanted my real hair back, lucky my natural hair texture grew back but please just appreciate what you’re born with
Whenever I get to the point where I'm frustrated with my hair, its most likely not because of my hair, but the fact I don't have time to style my hair and do everything I need to care for it. Basically a lack of time. So with that, we either adjust and make my styling my hair simple for the day and come back to styling it the way I want when I have the time. Adjusting my mindset on this helped make me love my hair more and not blame my hair for my frustration. Our hair doesnt actually need as much maintenance as people think once we accept it as it is.
This is exactly it. I've been making mini twists for the past three days. But I've not had enough time or motivation to complete it. I just cover with a headwrap till I'm done. 😩
Honestly I don't understand the need blow out your hair just do braids or the use to gel and wax to have neat parts. For this just shows you can't do hair at all you need to go back to school.

I will admit that I whine about my natural hair mainly because it has thinned out dramatically due to COVID and possibly other issues and I’m bitter that I lost the thickness I used to have while still having all the tangles and single strand knots and shrinkage. However, I loved this video and it was a much-needed reminder to focus on the positives of my hair (like my utterly unique curl pattern) instead of the negatives. Thank you!

BLACK WOMEN'S SELF-HATRED IS ASTOUNDING AND SAD.
@@actuallyjuliee I believe it. Most black hair salons are just toxic and unprofessional. I stopped going years ago with no plans on ever going back...

THIS, she honestly got on my nerves talking about how black women "whine" about their hair. Our hair is hard to maintain, it is a hard journey to learn how to cherish and love our hair so I see the frustration in a lot of it. They are not "peasants" they just haven't learned to embrace it.
@@BabyDoll-xx9rk I agree she shouldn't have used the word peasants esp. if her goal is to get us to love our hair, lol. But I do agree with her overall view. We do complain instead of having a solution-oriented mindset. It makes a difference for sure. If someone complained to you all the time about something without putting in the effort to figure out how to make it better, you would be annoyed too, rt?
Who hates 4c hair? Who are the people you speak of? Are they not black women? You just want to continue to remain a damn victim. Why not try speaking positively about 4c hair. And making it like she did the girl a mighty favour too!
honestly I think a lot of these stylists don't actually know what the hell they're doing. because there's no reason why I should have took her 5 hours to detangle her hair.
1 hour at the most! The jealous stylist was probably pulling her hair out too. And the way she cut her hair… 🤦🏾♀️

I agree I hate it when someone complains about their 4c hair
OMG, who raised these human beings!!?? She wouldn't take the wig off even when she was having a medical emergency!? That says A LOT. That's scary! I'm so sick about that...
Don’t forget how many women say we can’t have/grow long hair to black women showing that we can
Omg, I get really upset when women/men say that. It annoys me to the core.
There are African tribes where growing long hair is the standard.
I agree people need to be comfortable with frizz but with the amount of hair loss that accompanies braids blown out hair just decreases the tension.
I peeped that a long time ago. It was around when biracial/mixed women & girls started becoming the face of the natural hair movement.

If the stylist wears tons of wigs I’m not booking.
If the stylist talks bad about natural hair and certain textures I’m not booking. That tells you everything you need to know.
Very true
Our hair is unique. I love my hair and I love my people and only my people.

Even then I know I could move much faster because I take my sweet time lol

I understand why the majority of black women hate their hair, and it’s because of years of Eurocentric beauty standards being forced on them. Adding to the trauma is their own mothers and grandmothers never taking care of their own hair. But after a while, you have to learn how to love your hair. I’m still trying to love mine.
Right! It can be a process but our healing and self esteem raises will pay off for the next generations
4:31 I hate those UA-camrs who create content on how much they hate their hair 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
HOW MANY DAMNED PASSES DO YOU NEED?!?!?!? You are FRYING the girls hair!
They are on Tiktok saying they'd rather have fried heat damaged hair than 4c hair.
@@illiciumverum6149 That's sad
I literally was gasping for AIR almost cried when I saw her ruthlessly destroying that precious little girls hair!!! 😭😭😭😭😭
@nailsxscriptures And our hair is not strong 😢 It's fragile, we have to be extra careful, why are hairdressers so ruthless...
thankyou for your amazing commentary. never leaving you mwah mwah
Thanks, bestie. 😚
15:17 OMFG, take the wig off. Take that out of your hair and wash it. Wear it as is.
Loving my hair took years. started as a child my mother couldn't handle my hair so it was straightened, but as time went i went natural then full dreads locs now i see the true beauty of my hair an i love it. I only do protective styles for fun an I'm my own hairdresser 🎉🎉❤
Ik I don’t have the tightest curls but I have 3c-4a hair and I remember I hated it so much and begged my mom to let me relax it so she finally gave in and I got a keratin treatment then I hated how loose it was and wanted my real hair back, lucky my natural hair texture grew back but please just appreciate what you’re born with
I was like that with my 4C hair
I physically recoiled when i read that tweet!the gall!! The self hatred!! SMH. I'm still not convinced they weren't trolling tbh
You are absolutely correct. Anyone who rejects any part of themselves is not worthy of being human.
Girl what
*-casually transforms into fly-*
That's a bit dramatic. Lol
Heaven forbid people have depression, self esteem issues or anything.
All I can say is, thank you!
You bet!
This makes me sad. I like my hair texture.
Honestly I don't understand the need blow out your hair just do braids or the use to gel and wax to have neat parts. For this just shows you can't do hair at all you need to go back to school.
Exactly this.
Your title is evrything🤣🤣
I'm at a point where I want the people that hate their kinky coils publicly and loudly to be shamed into self love. I dunno if that's possible or not, but I need them to either quietly learn to love their hair or shut the hell up and stop being so damn embarrassing. I really cannot see why they're posting this nonsense for the world to see in 2024😧😧😧
Right?! I hate when they post their self loathing for everyone to see, especially in natural hair communities.
@@no.6377 they need to invest in a diary or something.
Omg yess!!! lol It’s soo embarrassing atp.
@@444lexit’s not only embarrassing but whenever I read their comments my brain cringes like I’ve heard the worst music to ever exist. It’s overdone self hatred
Y´ALL GET IT!!! These people seem to have no clue how to shut up and move in silence. It took me about 2 months to learn my hair, and you know why? Because I was doing stupid stuff like a clay detox!! What the hell did I need a clay detox for?😂🙄My hair was struggling back then but you ain´t hear me crying about it to the world! Now my hair routine is shampoo, condition, and slap some grease on it, pick it out into an afro. My hair is thick, healthy and full! I even shaved it to a buzzcut because I know it will grow back perfectly fine. Enjoyed that stage, and now I´m learning how to braid it by myself. Our hair IS NOT HARD!
-Signed a type 4 girlie who loves her hair to death!!
This is so true my best friend refuses to rock out her natural hair and will only wear box braids with extensions and such.
This is sad but, true. Our hair is treated differently that's why I love my stylist, cause she loves my hair and can tell right away if her clients has healthy and unhealthy hair.
Wish all stylists were like that
I know, now what I'm hearing this. I'm glad that I have a stylist that cares.
The girl at the end, who styled her hair in that heart mohawk!
🔥 ❤
She's so angelic
I will admit that I whine about my natural hair mainly because it has thinned out dramatically due to COVID and possibly other issues and I’m bitter that I lost the thickness I used to have while still having all the tangles and single strand knots and shrinkage. However, I loved this video and it was a much-needed reminder to focus on the positives of my hair (like my utterly unique curl pattern) instead of the negatives. Thank you!
Aw. Sorry about your hair issue. And that's different from just whining about hating your natural hair type or texture that I see and hear a lot.
Just found your channel and I’m in love! I’ve been wearing only my natural hair for 4 years now because I decided to ditch the wigs and I’m not going to lie, it has been a lot of work, loving myself as I am, taking care of my self and deconstructing all the self hate I had. It has been a journey but I would not have it any other way. I love my hair so much now and imagining myself in a wig that isn’t my texture makes me feel like a phony . Once the scales fall off and you see how wigs that are not your texture actually look really weird on you, you will understand
Aw. I'm glad you found me then. It's a journey, isn't it. And quite rewarding too.
@@actuallyjuliee it is very very rewarding
idk what other ppl are on, but i love my natural hair. the only reason i had a perm was b/c i didn't have a choice and no one taught me how to take care of my hair
i only hate how my products stay getting discontinued -____-
Our hair is amazing! I’m a 4b/4c woman who came along before UA-cam and all the products. I have locs now after 20 years of trying out everything my hair could do. If I ever didn’t love my hair , it was after I let one of these trifling stylists touch my head!! Sometimes our own people are our hairs worst enemy. Stop giving these heffa’s your money!!
Thank you Queen for your authentic commentary 👑🙏❤️😊
It’s the first time that I see your vidéo. I subcribe!
