Here in 2020, 40 years after this woman died I'm listening her song. (I'm an Indian) In another 40 million years, probably somebody from another world will hear this song, and wonder what this woman was like.
Its a mother singing to her daughter who has come of age and is going out. There is resignation to inevitable but huge concern for her daughter's welfare. Timeless theme. Timeless music.
What a amazing.... Really goose bumps feeling.... Dhruv rathee ki vjh se vo sb vhije dekh or sun pae jo syd kv age janna ya na janna pde... Thanku so much ki ye song us video ke bad mila.... I am happy with listen to this music
''Sir'' Do you work for him? Dhruv is a paid actor of Congress. But if you like that man for his stories rather than politics, then I appreciate your opinion!
That a bunch of geeks (meant with profound admiration) using 1970s technology were able to incorporate the tone and meaning of the song so poetically into the mission of the spacecraft is almost too much to believe. The mere thought that these very lyrics, “where do you go girl, alone” on these records, on these spacecraft, venturing out into the darkness, perhaps never to be found, but nevertheless, with the infinitesimally small chance of one day being heard by who knows who, who knows when, is mind boggling.
Not sure they knew the meaning of the lyrics. It was Robert E. Brown, ethnomusicologist from Wesleyan University, who was asked by Nasa to recommend some world music for Voyager, he recommended a number of songs from different culrtures, hard to imagine he would have known all those languages. I believe the sheer beauty of the music is the reason of his choice.
The closing lines are "jaat kahaan ho, akele" which mean: "where do you go, alone". Fitting reflection for a little craft hurtling through and expanding our realm of "explored" space, or beseeching another civilization as it passes by, eons after our own collapse.
Anugrah Adams First thought that came to my mind. It's very deep like the Voyager is on it's voyage but where is it going? Such a beautiful rendition. I have not lost faith in humanity.

The most distinct feature of this song is that it touches the heart of the person listening to it! The lyrics have such a deep meaning..And NASA..I feel so overwhelmed that Carl Sagan found a record to suit the fate of Voyager 1: Jaat Kahan ho Akeli..
"The words are those of a mother asking her child not to go to a festival because she is still too young. Kesar Bai sings them in a tone that indicates she thinks the child will go anyway." from Murmurs of the Earth, the book by Sagan and team about the creation of the Golden Record.
L M Taylor its a very quiet metaphor for humanity if you ask me. All laws of nature point to the fact that a species as fragile as we are cannot survive the vacuum of space, but the child will go anyway.
Lyrics: Jaat kahan ho, akeli gori, jaane na paiyyon Where do you go alone, girl, do your feet not know? Kesar rang ke maath bhaye hoy, Hori khelat Kanha re The fields are colored saffron, Krishna plays Holi (there I go.)
It is posible that aliens come and all of us get very excited, but aliens say: "no, please, get quiet, we are here just to know if you have more about that sound you call Kesarbai, nothing else".
Of all the wonderful sounds on the Golden Record, I can just imagine a distant species playing this divine music, and experiencing the same emotions that we are, right now. Love is the only constant !!

how apt for the Voyager "jaat kahan ho akeli" which means where are you going by yourself/alone - thinking about the Voyager traversing the universe alone and this playing = goosebumps
This song had not only made Mother India proud but also made humanity eternal forever in space. Even if we humans extinct today it will keep venturing in space for million years.
Cosmic feeling ----কোথায় চলেছ তুমি ----where goest thou ---- আমাদের ভয়েজার কোথায় চলেছ ----মহাকাশের কোন দূর প্রান্তে ----where at the far end of our Cosmos thou sailing now our Voyager !
Was hunting for the contents of the Golden disc and stumbled upon this Indian music. Being a non hindustani speaker, admit I didn't get a clue of what's being sung. I'm listening with my 14 y old girl who will soon venture out akeli, like the brilliant voyager twins who are the lonely travellers traversing the cold and dark eternity undetered carrying a leagacy in hope of being discovered by our likes someday somewhere.
It is a milestone of Indian Music. This was played in the atmosphere over and above in the sky... what an excellent singer who played it to catch the attention of alien.
Listening this songs and comments, my body is shaking by itself! Probably Goose Bumps! Voyager will continue its journey after 300 years! Where don't know! Incredible!❤🎉❤
Kesarbai Kerkar wanted her music to die with her, she wanted exclusivity and look at how she has succeeded in doing so! Absolutely glorious piece. Very few artists can sing in a way sending chills down your spine.
An amazing rendition of an amazing raag...one of the few songs you can listen a 1000 times and find something fresh yet...and many of them are in Raag Bhairavi, at least to my ears...Jamuna ke tir (Ustad Abdul Kareem Khan), and KLS' Babul mora... ...read somewhere it is her own composition? The clever use of the word 'kesar' in the last para may indicate that as well..
Moon expedition of NASA.... Has voice of kesar bai kerkar. Absolutely delight to listen JAAt kahaaa ho.... Its a beautiful feather in the cap of classical Indian music.
Book Murmurs of Earth by Carl Sagan brought me here. He and his team were far ahead of his time ..what a selection ..apt song for Voyager's curious and timeless journey to the unknown.
Whenever i play this song on speaker, my cat always come closer to it and sit, something very special about the rhythm and taal. Please share if you observe similar experience.
As many have pointed out the poetic beauty of the first line "Jaat Kahan Ho - where do you go alone, girl?" and how appropriate and fitting it is to the occasion of Voyager floating endlessly through space. But i think what's been missed and what i personally consider even more beautiful is the second line - "Kesar rang ke maath bhaye hoy, Hori khelat Kanha re The fields are colored saffron, Krishna is playing Holi (there I go.) " Krishna being symbolic of the playful nature of the Cosmic Existence 😊And voyager being our eternal desire of uncovering the depths of Universal Existence.
