    For Lila's father, its his own insecurity and knowledge of his inadequacy. He sees his intelligent strong-willed daughter and does not want his female child to surpass him due to sexism. He cannot stand it.

    Love this show and I love your description of the girls’ relationship. Watching the love-hate that Elena and Lila have throughout is so interesting and makes me think a lot about my own relationships, especially how they changed from childhood to adulthood. I think the two girls can be so competitive because that edge gives them some sense of control in an existence that otherwise feels very oppressive. Very exciting to see a new flavor of video from you eufuu!!

      It was hard describing only the first two episodes while they're still kids, especially because Elena's competitivness lashes out more when she becomes older. The tension between them is built up so beautifully and demonstrated to exist since they were yong. It's not just the fact that they're fighting an oppressive system, it's also that they were pit against each other by the teacher and to some extent, their parents. Good observations!! Thank you for the kind words :*

      I haven't read the books, so all my comments are based on the TV series. My opinion is that this is a story of individuals, their relationships, and the unfortunate misery they all share in the "neighborhood" in post-war Naples. I started out with an equal degree of ambivalence towards the 2 main characters, but as the series progressed, I came to appreciate Lila more, while Lenu's character just got more and more unlikable. While they both had the misfortune of growing up in a deprived section of society, their experiences and support systems could not be compared at all. Lila was the daughter of a violent maniac who threw her out of a window breaking her arm, while Lenu was the daughter of a loving father who doted on her. Lenu had the support and encouragement of her teachers (Oliviero and Galiani) while Lila was reviled by Oliviero for taking the only path that was available to her (Marriage). Lila's spiteful, rude, but genuinely generous nature is the product of the hard environment and the deprivation she had to endure, while Lenu on the other hand is the tragic composite of beauty, intelligence and a profound insecurity which led to her ending up exactly where she began in spite of the opportunities she had, and how hard she worked to get away

    I`m so late on this but I need to add something.
    Spoiler
    (because I don't remember right but think is talked on book four)
    Through the books, Lila tends to dissociate on horribles situations and, as far as I remember (is been a time since I read it), the first time she felt the world "losing its shape" was when she was throw to the window. So I think childhood trauma is a big thing on her character and definitly nurture made her take thing on her own hand as much as she can in opposition to Lenú, who's father adorate her as much as he can in the family context. Also, even if they live in the same neighborhood, Lenú's father has a permanent employee salary, which taked part on the support he showed her. Lila had no real opportunity of follow her instruction since his father is a craftsman.
    So my take is Lila thinks she is alone against the world and her motivation is take what she can on her own while Lenú's thing is make contacts and receive everything she can from them.

    • @Eufuu
      @Eufuu  10 місяців тому +10

      I think your analysis is spot on - Elena and Lila grew up with a different amount of support which shaped them into different people. I like seeing the juxtaposition of them as children when the deck is "stacked" towards Lila, but as she grows up and loses her grip, Elena comes out on "top" because life had been kinder to her. At the same time you can't blame Lila either because her attitude is a rebellion towards an unjust system that is oppressing her. Thank you for your thoughts!!

    Lila’s father is a hardworking shoemaker with several children and a mother and two maiden sisters to support. In one scene he complains that he should have married another woman who was much healthier and stronger than his wife. Misogyny was more overt and brutality the norm in those times.

  • @alegnabta
    @alegnabta Місяць тому +5

    This analysis was so on point! We can also see how the secondary characters shape Lila and Elena's personalities. To answer your question, so do the parents of them both. Lila's father is also a product of the way he was raised, probably had to face a violent or absent father and had probably has to serve during the war (we can't forget all of this takes place after the war) and has an education with the idea of "male superiority", though is unthinkable for him to think that his daughter, a girl, can be smarter and more successful than he was or is going to be. He's clearly also uneducated and has zero control over his emotions, so he always acts in rage and doesn't think about the consequences of his acts in the moment. Lila's mother knows that and that's the reason she is also passive, because she's also afraid of the reactions of the husband and "knows her place" as a woman. What I always asked myself was, why the teacher spoke with both Lenu's parents but only to Lila's mother? This leads us to Lenu's family which is more supportive maybe because the father works in another environment and is obliged to go out of the neighborhood every day seeing how other people live and interact. Lenu's father is also an opposite force to Lenu's mother who is also jealous of her child's success but can't pass this same feeling to the father, therefore Lenu's is allowed to study because her father supports her. So, to answer your question, Fernando's background, frustrations, and beliefs made him take this awful choice to throw his own child through the window.

    • @Eufuu
      @Eufuu  Місяць тому +1

      You are the first to attempt to answer the question! I really appreciate you trying to wrap your head around everyone's motives and trying to see things through the lens of the show and the time. I think it's so important to be able to do that so we can understand why such atrocities happen. That doesn't excuse them, of course, but I'd like to think understanding it can help us prevent them in the future.
      The one point that resonates with me personally is this ability to control one's emotions - I think a lot of people misunderstand how difficult it is to do so if you have never been taught or if you didn't have role models in your life. To react "appropriately" is a skill that needs to be honed and if your environment doesn't demand that of you (as his never did because everyone has always been subordinate to him), there's no impetus to change, which sadly leads to this escalation as the perpetrator and the victims lose a grip on a "normal" sense of reality. Super scary when it happens, but so important to understand if we want to lead our best lives.
      Thank you for watching and thinking!

      My goal was to make something that would celebrate the characters and serve as an introduction for the wider audience. My reading was therefore based on the context of (mostly) s1, but a little bit of s2 as well. It's also why I decided to use footage from only the first 2 episodes as to avoid spoilers. And consequently, why I focused on the characters as to make a short and approachable video.
      Since, I've also started reading the books and with s4 coming out, it might be a good time to revisit the story. I have a few projects in line so it might be a while, but it would be interesting to revisit with full context of both the final season and the books. I'll keep it in mind, and thank you again for leaving a comment!! Be on the lookout:D

    The father throwing Lila out of the window was very disturbing to watch that’s borderline child abuse.

    • @Eufuu
      @Eufuu  Рік тому +29

      I'd say it's not borderline, but it IS child abuse :( it's such a terrifying sight whenever an adult lashes their anger out on a child and to have it displayed so viciously is a harrowing reminder of how common this used to be (and still is). I am glad we are moving in a direction where abuses of power are less tolerated overall

      Children were routinely abused back in those days disguised as discipline. The father clearly has mental health issues along with a very strong ego that makes him lash out at those less vulnerable.

    I think it is because as Maestra Oliveiro said, he is worst than a commoner, because he knows he is and he choose to settle and wants his children to continue like that. In his mind there is only one way to do things and that is true becoming close to mob guys like the Solara. Even during the show you can how instead of encouraging his children with their shoe designs he punish them for even trying to come up with something good. However, when the Marcello or Stefano praise the shoes he shows excitement.

      Thank you for thinking about the question of my video! I think it's so important and I agre with you that there's an element of him thinking "there's only one way to do things". I suppose this mandates a follow-up question - why does he think that? And isn't it peculiar how us people have our "one right" idea and how quickly we meet resistance when we try to pass it on - almost as if this very fact contradicts itself.

    I think this story is about the giftedness of lila and lenu always walking in her shadow. I don’t think they’re equal intelligent. I think lila is exceptional but unfortunately because of circumstances of her life, she doesn’t get the chances she deserves to excel in life. Lila was destined for great things. I love her character. I think lenu is envy of lila. Of course lenu is intelligent, but only bootsmart. Her intelligence isn’t exceptional. Just mediocer with the academici. I dont like the character of lenu. I do think the girls needed eachother to motivate one and other. They were rivals. Even though lenu Excels in het academics, in the end lila excels in managing a data office. What makes her the most powerfull persoon in the village, without any education that’s a winner. I loved the storyline. Enjoyed it a lot. 😊

    The need to have control possessed him to throw his daughter out of a window. Outside that bleak dilapidated apartment he has no control. He is a poor uneducated shoemaker who feels like the life he lived up to that point was decided for him because for people like “us” this is how things are. At one point he says how he should have chosen another woman he had the chance to marry instead of his current wife. Did his parents force him like he ultimately forced Lila? Quite possibly. The only time he is in a position of power is in his home. He sadly does not use the power for good. He uses it to oppress his wife and children because he too feels oppressed. He knows his daughter. A young girl who is intelligent and defiant will become a woman who can not be tamed. He tried early on to break this. “What will the neighbors think of a man who can’t control his own daughter?” This ultimately compels him. He failed at breaking her spirit which then leads him to resent her for the remainder of his life. Had lila had a real man as a father she would have owned that town. Instead all she wanted to do was escape it and everyone in it.

      Thank you for attempting to answer the question! I really appreciate your analysis and how you expressed yourself.
      I think there is a harrowing tale here in us losing (apparent) control of our lives. I also think of the blindness that comes when applying our values to the next generation. That is something I think about a lot. I am sure in some way he thought he was being "helpful" but in reality he stifled Lila in more ways than he even realised. He did not equip her for the life she was going to lead. To me, that is the inherent tragedy of their story.
      I appreciate your comment and your thoughts!! Wish you all the best :)

      @ Well put. I agree with your point about applying our values to the next generation. Spot on! Although it’s hard for me to interpret any of his interactions with his family as trying to be helpful. He showed no redeeming qualities. A defeated man who stifled both his children. Thank you for discussing this character with me, I found Lila’s story fascinating. She gets a bad rep in more than a few opinions I’ve read but your video provides thoughtful and insightful analysis. I’d love to hear more!

      I would agree that Lila is more gifted than Elena. She's exceptionally bright and more intuitive. But I also think there's a different kind of cleverness in Elena. "Raw" smartness alone doesn't account for success. Nor is it a predictor of a kind of happiness. I'd wager to say that for Lila, at that point in time, it is both a blessing and a curse. Thank you for your comment!!
