  • My Brilliant Friend is a show set in Italy after World War 2. And this is a video essay about My Brilliant Friend, deconstructing the first episodes of the first season. My Brilliant Friend stars two main characters, Elena and Lila, two girls trying to survive and navigate a treacherous, violent world.
In this video essay we will explore their characters, drive, motivations and the settings while hopefully motivating you to watch the rest of the show. To avoid spoilers, I only used footage from the first two episodes of the first season.
    Video essay chapters:
    00:00 - A violent introduction
    00:58 - The pivotal question
    01:51 - Setting the stage
03:00 - An era of oppression
    04:07 - Insecurity and power
    06:00 - Loneliness
    06:44 - The pivotal question

Love this show and I love your description of the girls’ relationship. Watching the love-hate that Elena and Lila have throughout is so interesting and makes me think a lot about my own relationships, especially how they changed from childhood to adulthood. I think the two girls can be so competitive because that edge gives them some sense of control in an existence that otherwise feels very oppressive. Very exciting to see a new flavor of video from you eufuu!!

It was hard describing only the first two episodes while they're still kids, especially because Elena's competitivness lashes out more when she becomes older. The tension between them is built up so beautifully and demonstrated to exist since they were yong. It's not just the fact that they're fighting an oppressive system, it's also that they were pit against each other by the teacher and to some extent, their parents. Good observations!! Thank you for the kind words :*

I`m so late on this but I need to add something.
    Spoiler
(because I don't remember right but think is talked on book four)
Through the books, Lila tends to dissociate on horribles situations and, as far as I remember (is been a time since I read it), the first time she felt the world "losing its shape" was when she was throw to the window. So I think childhood trauma is a big thing on her character and definitly nurture made her take thing on her own hand as much as she can in opposition to Lenú, who's father adorate her as much as he can in the family context. Also, even if they live in the same neighborhood, Lenú's father has a permanent employee salary, which taked part on the support he showed her. Lila had no real opportunity of follow her instruction since his father is a craftsman.
So my take is Lila thinks she is alone against the world and her motivation is take what she can on her own while Lenú's thing is make contacts and receive everything she can from them.

I think your analysis is spot on - Elena and Lila grew up with a different amount of support which shaped them into different people. I like seeing the juxtaposition of them as children when the deck is "stacked" towards Lila, but as she grows up and loses her grip, Elena comes out on "top" because life had been kinder to her. At the same time you can't blame Lila either because her attitude is a rebellion towards an unjust system that is oppressing her. Thank you for your thoughts!!

The insight in this analysis is jaw-dropping. I haven't come across a reading of My Brilliant Friend that comes close.

Omg, thank you David! I appreciate your comment so much :) I've always dabbled with the idea of making video essays, but I've never felt like I had anything new to offer - the fact that it's resonating with some people makes me really happy!

The father throwing Lila out of the window was very disturbing to watch that’s borderline child abuse.

    • @Eufuu
      @Eufuu  Рік тому +10

I'd say it's not borderline, but it IS child abuse :( it's such a terrifying sight whenever an adult lashes their anger out on a child and to have it displayed so viciously is a harrowing reminder of how common this used to be (and still is). I am glad we are moving in a direction where abuses of power are less tolerated overall

Aw, thank you for the extremely kind comment! You have no idea how much it means to me. I definitely want to make more video essays of this.. and of a different sort in the future when time permits. I'm a teacher and married to my job right now but I have a few ideas in the works which will hopefully come out soon enough! I hope you're having a great day :)
