It isn't just because it's "better" that it's for the best. If stagnation happens in a character development, it'll get repetitive too easily. And the cuteness of it will wear off. People need to improve in order to keep being interesting to others. Or at least that's mostly true for fiction.

Sounds a lot like Teasing Master Takagi-san. Titular character comes on strong a lot, but when her love interest, Nishikata, is the one to go on the offence, she crumbles like a tower of cards in a wholesome way.
When has he ever been put on the defense or even shown to be weak on it? His obliviousness atm makes him virtually impervious to ANY attacks. We'll see if that changes if he starts catching feelings too, but I doubt it.
@bh5496 later chapters show him getting flustered from direct compliments and some other moments. Ch 48 & 54 he was thrown off when Nishimura called him cool and when she says she'd be lonely without him. Later I think after they see some teenagers kissing he starts realizing hes developing something of a crush. and it happens a bit more often. I think his sister teases him about it.
Every time I watch an episode of this, it makes me smile. The serious issue of bullying is right in our noses. But because it was handled differently with this dude around, all the hurtful words and tension in the air just blows right off.
Saw a couple of new season anime this weekend & this was for sure one of the better ones, looking forward to more wholesome cluelessness this season! 😆
