Extra History's video on the Easter Rising: • Seeds of Rebellion - T...
Leave a like, comment, and share if you enjoyed!
The Easter Rising (Rebellion) of 1916 didn't pan out the way the Irish nationalists hoped, but it laid the foundation for an independent Ireland that would come down the road. The poor planning, execution, and communication by the rebels during the rising led to an unconditional surrender only six days later, resulting in the brutal execution of 16 of the rising's leaders. What was planned to be a submitting move by Great Britain actually had the opposite effect, as the controversy of the executions only proved to foster support for Irish independence.
The story is complex, fascinating, and definitely not the kind of thing you can sum up in a 5 minute comedy video. So today we're looking at some of the wackier moments from the Easter Rising of 1916.
Tried something new with this video, I had a lot of fun with it! Leave a like and comment letting me know if you'd like to see more of this style in the future!
(I'll still do animations too, xoxo)
Ahh... you actually touch grass, well done

Good to see bluejay so good at blender, almost thought people could go outside or something ridiculous
I would never
His blender skills are truly godlike.
It's even more impressive that it's done by a real bird that is most definitely real and not just an arts and crafts product of some kindergartner put on a stick.
And no, I still refuse to believe mr Blueish Jay is just a typical guy!

His irish accent is so real
The Aud ( the ferman boat) was carrying 20,000 rifles on board to arm the revolution. It sinking was one of the biggest factors in the failure of the rising. The secret milatary council went ahead with it anyway as they knew the British wouldn't expect the go ahead after losing the Aud.

Great video topic as always BlueJay 👍🏽
Good godly man.
In America we are only taught one basic fact about irish history (well two facts, if you count potato famine) - that God created whiskey so the Irish would not conquer the world. And thank God that God did thus, bc Irish food sucks. And Americans all have at least one great grandparent that's Irish and one that's Italian.

As someone who is interested in British and Celtic history (I’m especially curious as to how the UK and Ireland came to be today, and learning about the origin of modern nation-states around the world is one of my obsessions), this video is great help. Also, your little Blue Jay is cute, and your comedic timing is impeccable! 🥰😆 Thanks for sharing, Blue Jay!
I can talk about my country of Philippines. The origin started in the 1870's. Cavite mutiny. Before that, there was never a nationalist sentiment. The harsh reaction of the Spain indicated that we were really different from them, and we will never be the same or part of them. So after that, many Filipino underground movements rose. The most important one is the KKK, no it's not connected with that KKK. KKK means kataastasan, kagalang galangan katipunan ng mga anak ng bayan which means highest, noblest assembly of the children of the nation.
That's the organization that fought the Spanish, and won with the help of the US, and fought against the US and lost. That's the foundation of our first republic.

I've been watching your channel for years, and it makes me happy to see you cover something so close to me. My great grandfather was part of the IRB and one of around 400 to defend the GPO in 1916. It's a piece of my family history that I'm very proud of, and it's great to see it represented so well.
My great uncle was also a part of the IRB, he fought in the Jacob's Factory.
We do twirl our thumbs. It's called "Däumchen (cute version of "thumb") drehen (turning)"
lol never thought I'd see my local village Howth on this channel. You actually kinda made the right choice in picking howth to talk about gun running because in 1914 a shipment of 1,500 Mausers arrived in Howth aboard a yacht called The Asgard (which is on display in Collins barracks in Dublin).
Figures might be a wee bit off but I think only about 2/3 of those 1500 landed at Howth, the rest landed at Kilcoole in Wicklow.

P.S. We don't fear duck's it's the geese that you have to look out for!
Nice to know that regardless of language, a goose means the same thing. Fear.
That’s not even a joke! At my highschool hundreds of geese would land on our football fields in the afternoon, and our coaches would cancel practice if there were too many of them out of fear that they would attack students.
Not just that but also swans the evil feckers
That sentiment stays true even here, in America!
it's so nice to see more people talk about the easter rising, it's an important part of irish history
And Prussian History... the uprising diverted resources that allowed the Prussian forces to make gains, thus prolonging WW1 best allies the Prussians and Ottomans had
More people talk about it? Eh, what? You're not Irish, I take it. Even today, it's topical due to the Stormont issues.

Fun fact: the citizens of Dublin were generally either indifferent toward the rebels, or irritated at them for the damage they caused. A lot of the impetuous for rebellion came from the rural areas and the seeds weren't quite as ripe in Dublin.
It wasn't until the Brits began summarily executing all the participants one by one - including James Connolly, who they had to tie to a chair to execute because he was wounded and couldn't stand - that the Dubliners became outraged and began to side with the rebel cause.
Other fun fact: Countess Constance Markievicz was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and participant in the Easter Rising. She was held with the rest of the ringleaders and was sentenced to be executed. They ultimately commuted her sentence because she was a female, and she was outraged, demanding to be executed with the rest of them.
(They didn't oblige, and she went on to become the first female cabinet minister in Europe and a member of parliament for part of Dublin.)
LMAO, I 100% seen you filming this, I was wondering where that guy got the blue jay toy hahahhaha how crazy, I mean I walk past the GPO like 5 times a day
Any plans on covering the 1798 Rebellion in Ireland? Brilliant story with two separate French invasions (both failed, only one actually landed).
The 1796 expedition could have completely altered history had they landed.
@@vonbeedle554 So true. I actually did my master's thesis on the feasibility of the landing and concluded that it was definitely possible, had only the weather been calmer
@@mrkeego1769 If only the French had committed more to the Killala landing, though it's easy to see why they were reluctant, considering how the laet voyage went.
@@vonbeedle554 I'm unsure about the success of 1798 but certainly landing more than 1,000 troops would make for an interesting investigation. The Castlebar Races is proof enough that Humbert was capable of great feats, though then there is also the travesty of Ballinamuck. 1796 I believe was the best chance, what with the garrison at Cork being about 700 in all, the Yeomanry only being a new force, and the distinct lack of regular troops.
In my thesis I suggested a joint landing at Bantry Bay and somewhere north-west on the island. Wolfe Tone actually suggested this, and I found that Humbert was part of the 1796 voyage so I suggested 12,000 under Hoche make for Cork while Humbert and the other 2,000-3,000 continued up the north-west of the island. General Lake would still probably be sent out with his 6,000 strong force like what happened in '98 assuming Humbert lands first and Hoche is effectively free to march northwards with little to no resistance.
It's a great thought experiment and shows that Britain really wasn't ready to repel an invasion on either Irish or British shores.
@@mrkeego1769 Yeah, in by the later months of 1798 the rebellion was pretty much over.
Humbert and Teeling and the French are kinda legends here in the North-West, so 1798 kind of hits a soft spot, as it does all of Ireland.
In Germany there's a saying for this kind of conundrum....... yeah, but all the words would be smooshed together "ohsheisseohfuchichbinskrewed!'
It’s crazy how my favourite history UA-camr actually made a video about my countries history 🥺 I love you bro ❤

Irish person here. I think the political leader that declared the Irish free state said he would do it when he was really drunk and words spread that it was going to happen. So to save face he signed one document and it became official.
Also allegedly one of the rebel leaders Padraig Piers was really big into blood sacrifice as an idea and went out on 1916 fully intending to die and become a martyr for Irish independence. people say that while they were under heavy fire Padraig was just making baked beans and waiting to lose . Also countess markievicz decided that it would be a good idea to dig trenches in a bloody urban area, despite the fact there were relatively tall buildings around the trenches that made them pretty much useless.
