I first heard this in 2008, and fell in love with Eddi Reader's voice back then and here I am reminiscing on this tune...Don't care about changed words or all that stuff I just love your voice, your nuances and where you place your gorgeous vibrato...Sweeter voices are rare imo.

Fabulous video performance. Eddi Reader also made a great album/ cd of the songs of Robert Burns. Highly recommended. I saw Gene Ptney sing this a couple of years ago in Edinburgh and his 3 hour not perfect performance was breathtaking.
When you're young and so in love and free And bewildered by the world you see Why do people hurt you so Only those in love would know What a town without pity can do When we stop to gaze upon a star People talk about how mad we are Ours is such an evil age Were like flowers in a cage What a town without pity can do Yeah, we have problems, many problems We need an understanding heart Why don't they help us, try to help us Before this grey and granite planet falls apart Take these eager lips and hold me fast I'm afraid this kind of joy can't last How can we keep love alive How can anything survive When these little minds tear you in two What a town without pity can do How we can we keep love alive How can anything survive When these little minds tear you in two What a town without pity can do No it isn't very pretty What a town without pity... Pause can do
Good old Eddi...anyone remember her on the lottery show...it may have been with this very classic...she sang then released the balls and aid the immortal line 'It could be you...but its definately camalot!' such a witty fun lady
If I can put my tuppence-worth in, it was a shock for me to hear her do this initially! But taken in the context of the album it came from, it makes perfect sense! She's singing about her hometown of Glasgow here! I suggest you all search out "Candyfloss & Medicine"!
HI eddi reader here... what a blast it was making this ... I changed some words in my arrogance because I wanted it to be less about a young couple in love but more about every single human being in this world born loving and putting up with the world and its shadows of violence, oppression, trauma and hate..... sorry Pitney fans for not sticking to the exact words. But he did inspire me. THANKS FOR WATCHING! love and peace eddi
Not bad cover. Perfect voice for the song - very sexy, like a young Gwen Stefani. Thanks for not butchering this song like many pop stars do with classics. It's much appreciated :-)
This knocks the arse out of the original, I really like the ajusting of lyrics in this version. Gene Pitney version is kinda depressing, especially when you read about the film it was written for.
@tamething1 all due respect I have to totally disagree with you. the vampy sex is already inherent in Gene's original. What could be more visually appropriate during the instrumental break at 1:52? the video story told here underscores the theme in the lyrics of a world of sleaze and power and gossip that sometimes ruins innocent people's lives. anyhow you can't blame Eddi for the video itself which was probably conceived by someone else. I agree some of the word changes are not needed.
Gene Pitney absolutely did _not_ “cover” this song-his was the _original_ version. And though Reader’s singing is good, what _idiot_ decided to change the lyrics? Instead of _Ours is_ not _an easy age_ _We’re like_ tigers _in a cage_ her version runs _Ours is_ such _an easy age_ _We’re like_ flowers _in a cage_ which contradicts the theme of the song.
She has a good voice I'll give her that but what the hell is she singing? "Ours is such a evil age? Were like flowers in a cage"?? I think it would be better if she learn the song before hand.
@jrdouglas This song is meant to be a gritty wail of angst, sung by a rebellious youth who feels the world is against him. This vapid version sucks the life right out of it. Showgirls? Vamping? Why? The lyric "We're like tigers in a cage" expresses the angst beautifully. Replacing it with the meaningless "We're like flowers in a cage" is an insult to intelligence. You sing well, Eddi, but you've turned this classic into an insipid puff piece. It's AWFUL.
Eddi is one of the greatest artists of our time, her voice is outstanding!
This comment is older than me, this gives me a weird emoting I can't tell.
@@imreallyexitedMe too.
The best version i've ever heard, mega talented lady

Best version I ever heard.
This is brilliant Eddie, just brilliant.

I think you are right...best version ever!!
Is there anything Eddi can't sing? She is truly a treasure.
Lordy girl, you look amazing in that dress! Loving the crooning too :)
Amazing!!!!

i love this song!she is great!
When you're young and so in love and free
And bewildered by the world you see
Why do people hurt you so
Only those in love would know
What a town without pity can do
When we stop to gaze upon a star
People talk about how mad we are

Were like flowers in a cage
What a town without pity can do
Yeah, we have problems, many problems
We need an understanding heart
Why don't they help us, try to help us
Before this grey and granite planet falls apart
Take these eager lips and hold me fast
I'm afraid this kind of joy can't last
How can we keep love alive
How can anything survive
When these little minds tear you in two
What a town without pity can do
How we can we keep love alive
How can anything survive
When these little minds tear you in two
What a town without pity can do
No it isn't very pretty
What a town without pity... Pause can do
great great great great great
Belleza de canción.
What a voice!

Fantastic x
@@robertwhite8774 Copy that!! I love this song, and I love your take on it, Eddi.
the word 'sexy' comes to mind.
@jrdouglas I love all your stuff, espoecially the Robert Burns covers. We all have scottish blood here in Northern Ireland. Keep it coming!!!
Norman
Both versions are great
Not bad cover. Perfect voice for the song - very sexy, like a young Gwen Stefani. Thanks for not butchering this song like many pop stars do with classics. It's much appreciated :-)
This is a good singer
Eddi -I will always love you!......
@jrdouglas
Hi
The best version ever, the icing on the cake...brill
LOL! I remember seeing that. It was the week Camelot announced huge profits.
Scotlands finest!!!
Come on people, no cover can ever be better than the original sung by Gene Pitney!
This knocks the arse out of the original, I really like the ajusting of lyrics in this version. Gene Pitney version is kinda depressing, especially when you read about the film it was written for.
Not very often a cover is better than original but this shades it ! It was G P`s best and a terrific number but this is quite superb !
its sacrilege to say that this version is better than the original,IT IS NOT,BUT ITS A VERY GOOD VERSION INDEED
Great cover.. & btw, Fairground Attraction..one of the most underrated bands ever...
Good version
κορυφαιο!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seems to be cut in the beginning and the end. Here is a better version:
ua-cam.com/video/g4-rpwQCyX0/v-deo.html
Eddi Reader is a critically aclaimed singer/songwriter in the folk/alternative genre!!!!!! NOT DRIVEL
That looks a bit like Nick Frost arguing on the phone.
Why did she change some of the lyrics ? Flowers in a cage ??
Class Act!
Why change lyrics like Mad instead of Bad and Flowers in a cage instead of Tigers . Bit silly but great record
Τραγουδάρα!
she loves connie francis!!!
ain't that a pity sweethearts
a pretty pity indeed
johnny brew? johnnybag ithink you mean! this girl is complete magic.away and lie in your own pish!!!!!!
she is not flat at all....are you deaf?
Fantastic eddi
@tamething1

this song is so naughty! if you know what i mean
I prefer Brian Setzers version (BSO, Guitar Slinger)
brilliant version. ..better than the original
It ok but never like Gene Pitney`s version .
nope
Good but ...not a patch on Pitney's version, not even close. She even goes flat at 1 minute 40. The rest of the song is skating on the edge.
@conmaesta HuH?
She has a good voice I'll give her that but what the hell is she singing? "Ours is such a evil age? Were like flowers in a cage"?? I think it would be better if she learn the song before hand.
my arse she goes flat! its a remake. meant to be different from the original.
I definitely prefer the original version by Gene Pitney
Why? Because he was even more feminine than this singer? He gave me the creeps.
Eh?...She changed the words, it was no mistake, much better than Gene Pitneys version
@steve77011 Being a star in america? why would anyone want to be a star in the land of hte tasteless
That... chin...
She don't know the lyrics making them up
i have to disagree with my wife and say i prefer this version to Gene Pitney's.
Absolutely no comparison to the Susan Acteson version. She should quietly retire.

She is not even singing the right words, what is the point of this?
Your... superficiality...
Wrong lyrics 👎
Crap!!!
