I've had the privilege of being down in the pit for Wicked, and the actual drummer is set up like this. Drummer is not in the pit, has a video showing the stage and conductor, and is just off in a different room away from everyone else. Pretty cool how all of this works together!!

There's a drummer and a percussionist. The percussion setup is actually rather impressive, if you get a chance to see the pit. There are the usual suspects, vibes, glock, xylo, timpani, concert bass, cymbals, plus a bunch of toys, even including a comparatively rare instrument called a trine (also used in Les Mis, actually).
Fantastic performance. Always felt that the drums lift up and carries the impact of this song and this video and the talent shown - puts it clearly on display.
I just went to see the new wicked movie and defying gravity was excellent in the movie but I couldnt help but feel like it didnt hit the same as it did on Broadway. The build up throughout verse 3 into the drumfill at the end make the song feel so much more powerful. To this day it is still the most incredible musical performance I've seen in my life.

Unpopular opinion but I have to agree with you. The pitch correction on vocals in the movie version makes it especially annoying for me.
