  • There is no one perfect way to build and run a leathercraft business. The great thing about building your own business is that you get to do it your own way. You can make decisions that work best for you and your goals.
    My goal with this series is to help you work through some critical decisions, stimulate new thoughts with new questions you may not have considered yet, and help you to learn from my experience in building my company.
    Throughout this series I’ll share about the different paths my business has taken and what I’ve learned along the way.

    Would you mind doing a video on some legal aspects of owning a smaller leather craft business here in the US? Such as insurance, liability, warranty, copyrights issues that might come up? Thank you for your videos!

    Awesome yes! Keep it coming! I saw you mentioned the name Mcfarland. Maybe your in the Wisconsin area. That's neat. I'm in the south central Wisconsin area. People greatly appreciate leather goods. Things that last a life time and longer for instance a leather belt are greatly appreciated. I have a leather book that was a gift to me and I like that!

    I just want to do something I enjoy. I'm hoping to reach like minded people, which will only strengthen my passion for this art. Doesn't mean I won't make something outside my comfort zone. I like the challenges or doing things others say I can't. I'll probably start doing mostly custom orders, but I do want to get to a point of inventory. I hurt my back (2 surgeries) at work in 2017 and being able to work on my own schedule will really be beneficial. Right now I'm just about done building and setting up my mobile shop. It's taken longer than I anticipated, but I pretty much built the entire thing inside the trailer. Very difficult, but it was too cold or snowy all winter. Throw in being off grid for the last year. I'm all in on this and I really hope it works. I've always been one of those guys that, when I have a passion for it, I jump in all the way. Usually doing well.

    Mr. Joe, what does 23+ stand for?

    • @joemeling3216
      @joemeling3216  2 роки тому

      The name 23+ is reference back to my rodeo past. Traditionally, bull riding is judged by two judges. Each judge marks the rider 1-25 on how well he rides and the bull 1-25 on how well he bucks, for a total out of 100points. Any score over 90 is considered to be an excellent ride. If you were to score 23 on a 23 point bull you would be 92 points. The effort that it takes to reach that mark of excellence in bull riding is the same effort I put in my leatherwork, striving to achieve that same level of excellence in every product or service I produce.

    • @joemeling3216
      @joemeling3216  2 роки тому

      That is an amazing why for doing leatherwork. But for running a business, that’s not a very powerful why to pull you through the struggles. If that is your why then it sounds like leatherwork is more of a hobby for you, in which case I’d say you’re spot on and doing great.

      @@aniken6877 you’re 100% right. I believe many of them started like that as well. My only point is as you grow, it’s helpful to develop a stronger why to get you through the more challenging days. Enjoying the challenge of the the craft will definitely get you through design struggles. However, when you have to deal with quarterly taxes, wholesale account negotiations, business structure decisions etc, it’s helpful to have a strong why. That’s something that I believe develops overtime as well. In no way am I saying that starting because it’s fun and you enjoy it is a bad thing. I’m simply offering what I’ve learned in working to continually trying to take my business to the next level. Please don’t hear what I say as any sort of discouragement or saying that you’re off base in any way. This stuff will be individual to everyone.
