The British used to transport spices from Wayanad to Kozhikode Beypur via Kutyadi. Between 1700 and 1750 it was decided that a faster route to Beypur should be made. This route via Thamarassery was made with the help of Karinthandan Muppan, a tribal leader from the Paniya tribe in Wayanad. There are a total of 9 hair pin bends in this curve.
The region is also a tourist destination with scenic views, wildlife sanctuaries, waterfalls, dams and coffee and tea plantations. Located in the Western Ghats, these mountain ranges connect Kozhikode and Wayanad districts. The pass is 14 km long from the foothills to the Lakidi View Point and is 800 meters above sea level.
Known as the gateway to Wayanad, Lakkidi View Point is a major tourist attraction. From here you can enjoy mesmerizing bird's eye view of Wayanad, breathtaking views of dark hills, green valleys and hairpin bends. The view from this side is a special feeling on foggy days.
Established in 1973, Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is bordered by Nagarhola Bandipur in Karnataka in the northeast and Muthumala in Tamil Nadu in the southeast.
