  • How many times can you drop a blocking ring?
The real reason for the transmissions problems become apparent (slowly dawns on me) we shall be going into this in greater detail later

Been rebuilding these for a long time and I think this young man is very talented and patient with his explanations and observations! Bravo!

Hey just wanted to say that you are doing a great job, your videos are great for someone with only 150 subs. I'm restoring a 1942 ford gpw from the ground up so wish me luck.

Aaron thanks for the comment. I'm trying to make useful and interesting videos for people so your support is appreciated. Good luck with the GPW, it's a long hard road but worth it in the end. Just make sure to do it once and do it right!

ya after hearing you story with the transmission i'm going to go back though mine. I'm picking up the project my granddad tore it all down and had a shop do some stuff to the block and he started to put it back together but then he got really sick and died a few years ago. the hardest part will be finding all the parts. But ill get it done,

Problem started selecting/grinding into 2nd gear. Progressively got worst. Then same problem selecting 3rd gear started. Stripped box down. Difficult removing 2nd/3rd & 1st gear/reverse gears off main output shaft. Noticed main output shaft had lips on the spline ends causing hard/difficult gear removal from main output shaft. Used brass drift & hammer to tap/gently remove gears. Used small air operated angle grinder with hardened cloth material to buff off all lips on spline ends to allow gears to easily slide onto main outout shaft. Found 3rd gear syncro ring had hair line fracture. Didn't notice till i manually pushed against main input shaft test, noticed the fracture & replaced 3rd gear syncro ring. Found 2 gear syncro ring inner cone grooves worn, not gripping the hub manually testing/ replaced new 2 gear synrco ring. Assembled/refit input & output shafts back into case. Fit front plate & paper gasket that secures input shaft into case. Applied pressure with large metal G clamp on output shaft rear main bearing after fitting main gear & nut on rear of main output shaft. No need to fit gearbox to transfer case to check clearances of 2nd & 3rd synro rings. No clearance with 3rd synro ring. Found 0.4 mm clearance with 2nd synro ring which i feel was excessive. Already purchased a shim kit, (5 various thickness shims) from my jeep parts supplier. Apparently made by the French. Used 2 of the thinnest shims to eliminate clearnce of 2nd syncro ring. Consider the thickness of rear paper gaskets that sits between the gearbox & tranfer case. Additional problem was a metallic grinding noise in reverse or 1st gear which was alarming/annoying. Noticed 1st/reverse selector claw had grooved wear in middle section on one side only. I manually turned 1st/reverse gear in the selector claw. I could feel grating noise of the gear rubbing against the selector claw. Used an angle grinder to grind away the scrape grooves in mid section of selector claw. Assembled gearbox/road test/perfect gear selection/no more grinding noise in 1st/reverse gear. Note: shims fit between output shaft main bearing & oil slinger. Rebuilt gearbox 12 months previous. Replaces new main input/output shafts/new front & rear main bearings, (sealed), new 2nd/3rd selector claw, 2 new detent springs & balls, new needle bearings inside rear end of input shaft/ new input shaft brass bush located in flywheel center/new throw out bearing. Lock the output shaft in a vice & turn the input shaft. Its no problem to have some drag/preload when turning the input shaft with multi grips. Gear selection is smooth/firm. I have eliminated 90 % gearbox noises when cruising along flat road surface.

In the driver's manual, it tells you to match engine speed on down change, even though the gearbox has synchro on 2nd and 3rd. TM 9-803 P age 18 (5) d.

I would suspect that 2nd gear for 2 reasons....1. The bushing has spun. 2. The synchro ring does not grab the cone part of the gear. I bet that was 99% of this transmissions problem.

My CJ3A pops out of second gear all by itself, could it be the same problem you have?

did you notice that cluster gear has floating bearings with a spacer in between, some later production may have a pressed in one one piece that may need to be reamed. just a thought

Hi Greendot, do you have the SKF bearing type numbers? I need some for my 44 GPW. Thanks

    Hi Folks,
Need to pick people’s brains. Have a 1942 willys jeep MB that is stuck in second gear. It will move from low to high transmission but it won’t come out of gear. It was if the have been welded, no amount of force is moving it.
Clutch and both drive shafts have been removed and are in full working order.
When edging forward it makes a loud repeating clunking noise and feels that someone is applying the brakes. I have a feeling it’s the transmission/gear box but don’t really know what to look for or what would be the most obvious.
    Any suggestions? Ta

Excessive play in the Input or output shaft of the transmission, shifter keys have moved out and blocked the synchro. Transmission will need to come out for rebuild, cheers

@@Greendot319 It will probably need a shim kit because of excessive end play allowing the keys to tip and thus jamming the syncronizer. You'll damage it worse trying to force it.
