Lol this is a very real sketch, I can’t count how many times I’ve been approached by people at the gas station who “ran out of gas” and need help.
They act as if we're dumb or something and haven't seen the same routine over and over.
What's funny about the ppl who hit you up at gas stations is how they'll refuse to let you actually put gas in their vehicle lmao.

I get crackheads asking for 80p everyday I've even had fights with them because they come too close when I'm with my girl.
Usually they start off with saying I'm not a bad person or anything I'm not a thief or anything etc and then it follows up with I need 80p for a bus, and I end up answering no all the way to back the fuck up crackhead or fuck off 🤣 also when you're smoking they come around like flies
The gas one is SUPER common. Heard it in Louisiana, California, Florida, New York, and Indiana. I don't know if there are classes where they teach this stuff or what but it was the same line. "Hey man, I just ran out of gas. You think I could get a couple bucks to get me to a station? Here, you can see my ID so you know I'm not some crazy person."
This one lady came up to me in Kalamazoo, MI and told me she was a gospel singer from Indianapolis who'd come here to perform and ran out of gas on the way home and was stranded. Never minding the obvious questions (you weren't paid to perform? You didn't fill your tank before you left? You don't have a phone? Someone from the church you performed at cannot come to your assistance?) I gave her $5 basically just to make her go away. A year lady, the same lady come up to me again at the exact same spot with the exact same story, and I was like, 'oh, you ain't made it home yet?'
I was with a friend once walking by a gas station and a giant dude in a dirty t-shirt with a big scar across his face came over starting with the whole "I just ran out of gas, my wife's in the truck, we're just trying to get home, etc, etc" going on and on with that textbook scam I've seen a million times. I'd seen him around town doing odd jobs and he seemed like a legitimately hard worker and humble dude, but figuring it was still a hustle, just politely said "sorry, I don't got any cash", and kept walking. My friend pulled out his wallet and gave the guy a 5er. Dude looked like he'd was about to cry and started thanking him profusely and saying how he knows how it looks and how nobody would believe him. We kept walking and a minute later, the guy pulls up next to us in a truck with a woman in the passenger seat and again said "I can't thank you enough, you'll see me around town, let me know if you ever need anything" to my friend and drives off.
It honestly blew my mind as 99.9% of the time that's the oldest scam in the book. Next day I saw the guy riding his bike to go wash windows at the local pizza shop. He shined the shit out of those windows with a smile. I learned a bit more about that guy from people around town and everyone could vouch that he was a hard worker and a stand up guy who came from nothing and was struggling. Some people really are just having a rough go of it and fallen on hard times. That chances of someone doing that gas thing and being legit are still so slim though that it hasn't really changed my mind about it generally, it just makes me wonder more than I used to.

I’m from Las Vegas and we get it down here constantly. The funny thing is the last time it happened I was the only car parked at the pump or in the lot, I asked him were he was parked and he pointed to my car lol
So I prob got scammed. Damn

As usual, watching you watch my favorite K&P sketches never fails to make me feel like I'm watching them w friends. As everyone else indicates, scams like these are truly universal and seem to rise & fall everywhere at once. I used to hear "my daughter's in the car" every time I pulled into a gas station, but haven't heard it for a long time.
One time I had a guy walking around the gas station asking for money to get gas, so I said , "Since I'm filling up, I can but a couple of gallons in your gas can." He did not like the response I gave him.🤣🤣
Same story. Funny thing was watching guy drive around in circles coming back asking other people for gas money again. After already offer to fill up his car.

I remember a dude just this actually came to my house and rang my doorbell. I told him no. Next morning, it was winter, I notice my shovel I had on the front deck was gone. I also ran into a guy who asked for money, but his hook was that he would tell a joke for it. I don't recall the joke, but I ran into him a couple of times and it was always the same joke. Which made me sad.
Ugh, I get hit up for money or cigarettes every morning, multiple times, and it has made me cynical like Dave, I don't even look at them and say "Nope!"

I always ask them what they need money for, if they say food I offer to take them to the closest restaurant and buy them something. Never fails they decline every time!!
Guy with a small gas can approached me with the "family" story at a nearby station . Called his bluff. I left some money with the cashier and told the cashier it was for the guy to pump gas and if he didn't I'd be back for my money.

Around 2003 I was driving in NYC in a rainstorm on my way back to NJ when this guy tapped on my window and asked me if I was from NJ because he was too (I had NJ plates) and proceeded to tell me a sob story of how he's an executive and his BMW had ran out of gas around the block and he could not contact his office on his cell (he had a giant 1980's phone he must have found, and he was wearing an ill fitting wool suit that looked raggedy ), then he says he will send me some Broadway tickets if I give him $20 for some gas, and did the ID trick. Since I was in stand still traffic I decided to play with him, asked why he didn't walk to his office, or take a cab and ask him to wait so you could pay him, why he had no credit cards and if he had a BMW why he didn't he have roadside assistance, etc. He walked away and went to another car.

Where I live every major intersection has guys with signs that say "homeless veteran, God bless."
I gave a guy a ride across town and he didn't seem to care where I drove him. When I stopped, he asked if he could have the quarters in the cup holder. Complicated way of asking for change.

I used to work nights at a gas station across the street from a crackhouse and in an area where lots of shifty people would come through. Obviously you can't walk away from the grifters and beggars, as you're at work and they're just wandering through. At a certain point, you do loan some people small amounts of money (a few dollars here and there) because the peace and quiet is worth more than having to put up with the begging and, if you can remember who owes you and how much, you're basically paying to make those people go away forever. The next time they show up and you mention the money they owe you, they leave and don't come back when you're working again. Made for some interesting situations, though.

Here in Texas (Houston) the homeless community is LARGE. There’s at least 3 at every intersection & gas station. They even use their children (I’m assuming it’s theirs) as props. Have them begging at one part of a parking lot, & then the “parents” beg at the other.

I've never seen this one. It reminds me of a couple guys who've approached me recently for gas money.
Here, in Puerto Rico, in the San Juan area, there are some guys who go around asking people for money for gas. One of them drives with his "brother," who's supposed to be disabled, and asks people in grocery store parking lots for money to buy gas. He says he has to drive far to get home and doesn't have enough gas to get there.
The other guy is an older guy who parks his car by the ramp to the highway and asks motorists whether they can spare a couple dollars to help him buy gas because his car has run out of gas. I've seen him a few times, so I know it's a scam because he can't be running so often out of gas.

Got back in the car and my friend said he saw the guy come out from behind the dumpster pantomiming the “reel the fishes in” behind me with his hand
I rolled the window down and said “good luck with the fishing” and drove off with the shirtless homey swearing and waving his arms around like a 5-year-old denied candy by his mum 😆

Definitely have to be careful for scammers, keep your bag in view and close on your person and of course common sense is not to just go to an atm to pull cash for them. But I feel some sympathy for them. I can only imagine what it feels like to not have a home and just trying to survive out in the rough. So if someone asks for some spare change, if I have some time I’ll walk them into a nearby fast food and order them something for them. At least having a hot meal makes the world a little less cold. And maybe sit down and have a chat if I think the person looks like needs company. Maybe they are addicts and trying to panhandle just for more drugs. But who am I to judge? Fortunately I was raised well and able to attend college thanks to my mom supporting me. But who knows how this person before me ended up on the streets. Maybe it was some bad fortune that he ended up without any support from family and he lost his job. There’s also many who have mental health issues that get released on the streets from hospitals because there’s no health care to support them. It’s really sad the homeless situation in America. I think it’s a bit different from Europe, where many end up that way not by their own choice. If possible just giving one warm meal and trying to show a bit of kindness can make a small difference, I think that’s something as fellow humans shouldn’t forget. Having sympathy for our fellow brother/sister.

There's an old drugged out lady that walks the Mass Transit Stations (Muni or Bart Stations) where I'm from (San Francisco) asking people for a dollar for four quarters. I always wondered why she just doesn't keep the coins. I found out it's because drug dealers don't take quarters. 💊
I've tipped con artists for the entertainment of a creative story before.

When I was in my early 20's I was homeless for a couple years. I would use the same tricks. You would be surprised how much you could make off tourist. Some nights I would make over $300. Had a buddy who looked like Hulk Hogan that would bring in $600 some nights. I sometimes wonder why I bother even working a shit job and not just go back to sponging. (panhandling, begging)
really sad people do that (and they do it way to often)- people too lazy to work abuse others willingness to help and care. at some point in the future i wont be surprised if 'caring about others' becomes a foreign topic.
I had some con artist come up to me "hey chief....". I gave him a mean look and said "I'm part Cherokee...why you be gettin' racist up on me...calling me Chief? Do I look like Tonto to you?". He backed off and half apologized. I'll bet he won't use that line again.
