- Rare live performance of Smoke on the Water with Lars Ulrich, Ian Gillan Band, and Gizzarelli.
Live at Slims San Francisco 2006 with the Ian Gillan Band (Deep Purple) and special guests.
David Wolf Gizzarelli-Lead Guitar, Ian Gillan-Vocals, Lars Ulrich-Drums, Michael Lee Jackson-Guitar, Dean Howard-Guitar, Joe Mennonna-Keys and Sax, Rodney Appleby-Bass, and Randy Cooke-Drums.
"The lyrics of the song tell a true story: on December 4, 1971, Deep Purple had set up camp in Montreux, Switzerland to record an album using a mobile recording studio (rented from the Rolling Stones and known as the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio - referred to as the "Rolling truck Stones thing" and "the mobile" in the song lyrics) at the entertainment complex that was part of the Montreux Casino (referred to as "the gambling house" in the song lyric). On the eve of the recording session a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino's theatre. During the gig a fire broke out: "In the middle of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on 'King Kong', the place suddenly caught fire. Somebody in the audience had fired a flare gun into the ceiling, at which point the rattan covering started to burn"[1][2], as mentioned in the "some stupid with a flare gun" line. The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song (credited to bass guitarist Roger Glover, who related how the title occurred to him when he suddenly woke from a dream a few days later) referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel across the lake. The "Funky Claude" running in and out is referring to Claude Nobs, the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival who helped some of the audience escape the fire ... "

Deep purple is Lars Ulrich favourite band, and watchin a Purple show in the early 70's made him realise that he wanted to play drums while watchin Ian Paice
The lives of rock stars... Thanks for being truthfull.
Every fans dream. To play with your heros, or at least one of them :)
Cool performance! Lars was shocked when he saw Deep Purple in concert when he was a kid and decided to play drums after watching his favourite drummer, Paice.
Metallica and Purple rule!
Yes Lars Ulrich should take David Coverdale to join Glenn Hughes on stage and perform Deep Purple Mark III songs
The funny thing about this video is that Lars Ulrich saw Deep Purple live at the age of 10
back in 1973 live in Copenhagen Denmark with
his father.
I saw them(Metallica + Deep Purple)playing live at the Monsters of Rock Festival 1987
in Nuremberg, Germany. Great Festival !!!
deep purple rocks!!!
lars rules!!!
The only time you'll ever see Lars Ulrich behind Yamaha Drums!
Hey Gizza, congratulations! You're such a lucky guy! And good job, man!
OMG LARS WITH IAN!!!! BEST AND MOST UNBELIEVABLE LINE-UP OF ALL AGES............i guess it would be with MAB the most unbelievable :P
the sound is like in tunel.lars you˙re a lucky man
You lucky bastard hahaha! =D
Awesome.
this song is known for its amazing riff. its not hard to play but it is so amazing
@xHeReTiiC i think it's the occurance of Lars Ulrich and Deep Purple together on stage that makes it rare, not the video?
whats wrong with you guys??!
Amazing video!!!! Deep Purple and Metallica ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Epic Video
Lars should be appointed "Queen of the World."
@Broezzz Not a very nice thing to say, Ian is the frontman of Deep Purple, the band who inspired Lars to play the drums, and Ian is also one of the best voices in rock history period.
i KNOW!his first concert at 9 yrs was deep puple nd i bet ian n the guys are proud and honoured by him at the same time =P
Lars and Big Ian on one Stage. Haha, that's great!
music like this STARTED metal
look to the past and see the future
Go Ian!
listen to and justice for all album,
I envy you gzzrll.

it was very well played .... fuck...what do i give to be up there!!!
Great ... LARS on drums :-)
Lars Ulrich should perform with Deep Purple members and play the songs written by them in the 1970s
The bass player is funky!
FUCK YEAH THAT BASSIST IS AWESOME!
Lars is very cool :D
and from my country Denmark, in Europe n_n
astig to!!!
Awesome \m/
He does still play with Metallica, this was just a guest appearance and he grew up loving Deep Purple so I'm sure he enjoyed doing this.
cool thing man ;)
cool dude
Best Rock show I ever saw; MILE HIGH STADIUM - 1988
Kingdom Come
Metallica
Dokken (last US show ever)
Scorpions
VanHagar
fuck the most big bands on this fucking world thanks this video is amazing
Great
this video is a response to all those fucktards out there judging on who's better and who's not ... what people seem unable to realize is that all those great musicians, no matter the band, no matter the genre they are playing are literally in the pantheon of music. Good to see a couple of living legends performing on stage one of the most amazing songs of all times! 5/5 thx for the upload mate !
sooon in Aarmenia yeah!
Sorry, but Deep Purple wasn't touring in 1986. They toured in 1984/85 w. the 'Perfect Strangers' album, and again in 1987/88 with 'The House Of Blue Light'.
i wish i was there... :(
yeah.
Good job mate. I can't get my head around someone having to work on a solo for SOTW through. It's a bit like Highway Star: Play Richie's signature licks, dick around for bit and then shut the fuck up :D
you know, LArs is FUCKING Lucky!!!
Who doesn't like to play with kings of rock
dude. iS DEEP PURPLE.i would die if i see ian!
and rocks
Lars playing Yamaha drums...I like this :-) Yamaha rocks !!!
Hey masterofpuppets84 I don't know why you got thumbs down for that comment as you were dead right, that was his original intention
you cannot compare drummers from different generations... Lars Ulrich is the best drummer for the last 20 years.
When I was 16 I saw my first concert; It was in turin, 22 June 1993:
The Cult
Suicidal Tendencis
Megadeath
Metallica
Piate sti spicci
Does Lars know how to go more than one measure without putting a fill in?
I wanna party with Ian and Lars and then jam
hey man.he's lucky, because he played with his idols.
cool
In your fucking face HATERS!
Lars is awesome, BE JEALOUS!
@J666J and wtf have you done with those 25 years? have you founded one of the greatest metal bands of all time? i didnt think so...
@BreakingGlass77 Ahhh, good, you admit it. That's one step in the right direction....
how da hell could u get up stage playin with lars and ian and stuff?
I think the first rock concert Lars went to see with his father was Deep Purple \m/
Hy, I think the guy on the right goes by the name of Michael Jackson. He's from Buffalo.
Well my opinion, He did it real great on justice, I love his drums on that album, otherwise,,, he ruined kill em all big time. He has always trashed M live shows, but anyway he´s a part of something real special. Not close to Gillan but,,,,,,, who are.
Ruined Kill 'Em All?
LMAO Good one dude lol
@MrHeavysteel half of metallica's songs don't need two bass drums. and neither does Smoke on the Water
"this better be good" *roflmfao*
its all meatal to me...
its all good to me
7:10 Do the moob-groove.
Mehh I didn't think Lars' playing was that bad actually :S
Everyone else was awesome too.
how old is this?
lars rule
Oh really? Come on now, it's one of the most famous songs of our time, so that comment was a _little_ bit superfluous...
Rod Smallwod? From Iron Maiden?
@haggismuncher Gillan liked it, sorry you didn't ...
It was probably the first time that Lars played a Yamaha Drum Kit
The bass kills the sound as soon as it drops in :)
MrCrrispy not much I can do. The camera mic sucked.
the song wqas played really nice but the camera proboly was thwe probolem of all the damn static....
@bimbo9 it was probably quite good but the audio quality is shite
the band wouldn't allow me to go off so I had to play along with the song, but i do get a small lead guitar spot ...
That's why I'll never enter a contest, wouldn't be worth my time.
DP with Lars i think
i spy a line 6 spider valve can any one else find it?
lars tocando con un bombo solo?
Hart846, Although I agree with u I will say that there are more creative drummers, one of em surely is Danny Carey... Still Lars does his job best.
Tell 'em, girl!
Some of you are insultingly crass. What did you expect of an off the cuff jam session? They were having fun and don't need your criticism.
Guitarhero what about Alex Van halenhaven't you heard Hot for Teacher.
el micro de la camara, deja mucho que desear
wow marfa
Awesome, nice find.
That snare sounds so ugly imo.
But true metal right there!
the reason lars snare sounds bad all the time is cause he dosent hit it correctly. hE IS A GOOD DRUMMER WITH BAD TECHNIQUE
Nu-shit it's how it should be called man...

sounded like hetfield shouting this better be good!
Poor Ian Gillan
lars usually beats them to death^^ we all know that. that makes him such an intense drummer
lars and peter criss have same fucking playing burk!!!!!!
@J666J like to see you play metallica songs on the kit, ya Might not like them, fare enough, but to say lars is shit is a bit lame.
if i see well, there is Kirk Hammett too...
WTF? Lars!?!? he should be playing for Metallica. is there he is belong :(
any body there are with me?
he did want to be a tennis player..
its on a rock band load screen.
he had that intention until he met hetfield.
