As a ham radio operator who has been in for several years I say the bridge would be good, because I know a lot of us are on a budget, and needing 3 or 4 different brands floating around with an average entry price around $300 plus each for just the base bare bone unit it can get real expensive fast. The fact there seems to be a new digital mode come out every couple years lately it makes me shiver a bit reminding me of the small fortune I had to spend to be able to get proper HF going. (For anyone who doesn't know if you just buy a basic HF setup your going to get a good lesson on the sound of static. Also people will rarely answer back to your calling CQ because they just can't hear you. After you drop a few grand into a proper antenna, a few grand into proper cables and grounding, a few grand into a proper unit with dsp, antenna tuner, a sdr tap so you can watch the spectrum to see where people are transmitting, a laptop to hook up for digital mode/etc, and at least 600w amp to transmit with a bit of a punch to get you out there you can actually sustain a proper rag chew, or regularly check into a net if desired as long as the pathway is open. As an example of just how expensive HF is, and I don't think we should the 2m/440 newb/easy/kids can easily join in/tech learning/play with new things section to turn into the same kind of pocketbook slayer HF is.)

Baofeng DM-1701 apparently requires Microsoft Excel to upload the user
contact database. Is there a work around? A few friends have this
radio but can't upload the user contact database.

@@nc818 Its been a long time since I did this post but if I remember, the problem was getting
the data out or into the radio without using Microsoft Excel previously installed for the Baofeng
CPS to work. None of the free alternatives to Microsoft Excel installed let the Baofeng CPS
work. The person who I was posting for did get it to work but had to use his Wifes laptop
who had Microsoft Excel on it.

in a Baofeng never change the original antenna with a "better antenna" because the radio will go deaf due to saturation... why? I don't know

This or the Radioddity GD-77? Can't find any comparison reviews.

Good question! My to cents is the DG-77 (see here: amzn.to/377oOgg ) is the same as the Baofeng 1801 (see here: amzn.to/3barFIx ) with only some minor case mods. Both are also lessor radio's then the Baofeng 1701 (see here: amzn.to/2ub80Yh ) but also cheaper. With DMR you don't need the greatest, however what I will call out is there is firmware out there for the GD-77 which they claims turns it into a super hot spot (it might work on the 1801 but don't know for sure). If you want a more robust over all (i.e. Analog & Digital as well as quality) then the 1701 would be my pick. If I wanted a cheap and cheer radio to hack I would go with the GD-77 just because of the firmware...
