Wow...you go from self taught Suzie Homemaker to a PhD in Doomsday Prepping. I just spent 40 minutes watching your dehydration methods and have learned a ton! Thanks so much for sharing all the tips and tricks!
A great channel on dehydration , I've been dehydrating the last 4yrs with a fan type dehydrator 10 tray and still use foods 4yrs old with no issues. Best advice on how to prep your foods is here on this channel - I even dehydrated water melon and add to cobbler type goodies !! now back to my apples (125pounds of them) and I am core/peel/slice for now and dunking in lemon juice to quart bag up for the freezer,,later I will thaw and Dehydrate as I have space, but the apples need prep NOW ,, !!
Please show how they look re-hydrated as well. Unless that is in the next videos. Thank you so much for posting this, I am going to begin dehydrating my garden items that we don't can.
You give a whole new meaning to the word Prepper....BEST VIDEO EVER! I was looking for another way to preserve foods without the freezer or canning. Thank you very much for sharing what you know.
This is really smart, especially if you buy fruits and veges at their seasonal peak for best flavor and color, and you'd also get the best price. Saving you alot of money by stocking up and being able to use later when prices go up when they are no longer available seasonally. I've had a dehydrator for years and never tried it. I look forward to going crazy with it now! Thanks a million! WorldStoreOne
I'm working my way through your series. Just wanted to say thanks for the great information. Very cool that you're including recipes too. I never would have thought to get a meat slicer to slice veggies, but it makes perfect sense. I'm pumping up my vegetable garden this year, and looking forward to getting a dehydrator and saving veggies for the winter!
Sarah Mangone I’ve dehydrated lots of meats, fruits, and vegetables. All require different preparation, but I like dehydrating for storage. My dehydrator is a Magic Mill
@@anthonymichaelhalloates2902 Thank you. I'm doing the dehydrated for the very same reason. Space being the biggie and another is the hubby doesn't like the same veggies as myself. Doing it this way we can have what we like.
I can tell you put so much work into this video. Lots of prep work. I really appreciate that. I am interested in dehydrating and storage of foodage but have never done it before. I learn best by seeing so this is a great video for me. Thank you!
Love your videos. Just got my first dehydrator and appreciate all the great instruction. You stay on task and don't go on to long. Flow is really nice. Thank you🌹
Brilliant. Am very I retested in dehydrating. Watching loads of ideas to learn how to dehydrate. The sound of your heels in the stone floor Eeeeeeekkkkkkkk!!!!!! X
Ok. I put a new batch in and set on 120. They have been in for about 6 hours now. Another thing I did differently was I used lemon juice on the apples and bananas this time. I can already tell a world of difference. The apples are white and the peel is a bright red. The bananas are yellow, not brown like the 1st batch. I also have oranges, kiwi, tomatoes, frozen peas and canned corn in there. I am having so much fun with it. You have inspired me to do this & I thank you for it. The kids love it.
This is Great! You should do your own cooking show! I bought a dehydrator yesterday and did a batch of home grown tomatoes, and today I have a batch of bananas.... I am tired of always canning, this is FUN! Can't wait for more episodes or "The Book" also loved the green sweater in episode 8 (I am also a knitter) Thank you!
Thanks to you :) I've started the Boweevil Family Evening Class of DEHYDRATING for my 5 daughters and 2 daughter -in-laws and soon to be 2 future daughter-in-laws. I've sent them all 13 vedeos by Email and about 30+ questions and answers i forewarded of your COMMENT section, hope it's alright? I'm really excited to get my WHOLE family doing this. Like all the other comments THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!
Have learned soooo much from this series of videos-thank you! Appreciate your clarity and excellent video work-I have really gotten into dehydrated food storage after watching you-and feel confident that my food is safe for my family to eat and will store well!!
Awesome. Thank you for the quick reference guide to the side. We're going to be REALLY relying on this stuff shortly, of that I am sure. What a blessing. THANK YOU ***** And thank you Billy for favoriting. I was so excited when I saw this in the list of friend's activities!
Thanks Tammy, I think I did a few things wrong. One, I set the dehydrator in the garage because I didn't want the smell of broccoli and cauliflower making the house smell funky! The garage is hot and then it was super humid because we got rain yesterday. I live in a very humid area anyway here on the Gulf Coast. I will keep the dehydrators inside from now on! Thanks!
You have convinced me. I purchased a 600w 10 tray dehydrator and I shall dehydrate the World!... of fruit and vegetables. Been buying non organic freeze dried for long term storage/survival. Now here we go! Cost effective, organic, local economy supportive, and delicious. Perchance do you dehydrate any fish or meat? Thank you for lesson and references.
WoW Lots of comments. I for one don't care if you are making any money. Actually, I think you should be getting something for all the work you are doing. Good Job !!!
Same reason people do canning or freezing - IOW for long-term storage. My freezer will only hold so much, and my pantry will only hold so much as well. Dehydrating shrinks the size considerably so it takes up less room, and done properly that food will be good for a looong time. :)
Incredible video, thank you very much for taking the time and effort to document food dehydration. I stumbled across here while checking out a Lyndon LaRouche video. I have always wanted to make my own beef jerky since I was young but now that I am older I want to have some storable, nutrient rich, healthy food.
I like the information presented but I have a few suggestions for the video production. Please consider improving the audio by using a lavaliere microphone and use an external light to provide even illumination. Thanks.
The tomatoes did finally get dry enough to suit me! My first success! The apples and citrus never got dry enough to qualify for long-term storage, but they are very delicious. I'll keep working at it. This is why we have to start NOW and go through the learning curve! I am trying to put together a little document (using many of your tips, plus some from other books)that I can use as a reference for later. If you would like a copy once I get it going, I'd be happy to share. Thanks for everything!
Hey Paula! Your food ALWAYS looks SO good!! Your husband must be as big as a house.. A few Q's for you-could you dehydrate and cook with some citrus? And how bout the different ways of dehydrating eggs- whole, separated, scrambled,etc...You are so fun to watch, thank you So much for the vids! GOD Bless you!!
Thank you so much for this video and all the time, energy and experience you have put into it. You’re very generous in sharing your expertise. My dehydrater arrive 2 days ago and I have been reading the pamphlet that came with it only to be thoroughly confused. I feel like you have given me what I need. Again, thank you! Already subscribed after one video!
Very good video!! I have bought a dehydrator, but have not used it yet and really know nothing about it. Can you recommend a good dehydrating cookbook? Do the fruits and veggies have to be from the garden or can they be store-bought? Once I'm more familiar with the uses of different dehydrated foods, the more I'll know what I want to do.
I am waiting to order my Excalibur this next week. I am so excited. You need to add the tag word Excalibur to the list. I searched under Excalibur and it didn't come up with any results. Thanks for taking time to do this. I'll be hitting the ground running when it gets here!
Thanks for putting your channel together :) Does anyone have brands you trust that you could mention here for me? Also, is $60 an acceptable price for a dehydrator? I have a small family so I don't think I'll be needing a 6+ tray system. Thanks everybody!
I just bought a blemished Excalibur 3926T off ebay direct from Excalibur. I started using it 2 days ago. I have dehydrated apples, bananas & strawberries. I put the temp on 135 and I beleive my apples and bananas have the "case hardening" you talked about in your posts. The strawberries seem fine. I will have to do the next batch on 120 & see if that makes the difference. I have had the dehydrator on for 2 days non stop and the apples and bananas do not snap or make that plastic clicking sound.
Excellent video--it's too bad about the distant, echoey audio. Oh! It improved for a moment when you showed the dehydrator--but now it's back to not so good. Again, an excellent video that I watched twice.
Here I am, watching your videos again! Every time I get a dehydrator filled I come over here and watch your videos while I plan what I will dry next! I have a cauliflower question. I dumped a 1lb bag of frozen cauliflower on the dehydrator tray. They have been going for almost 24 hours! The tops seem hard and brittle but the stems seem kind of leathery. Hard but they don't snap when I bend. I am not sure if they are fully dried. How can I tell? Thanks!
Thanks so much for doing these! I've watched this series and plan to watch more of your videos. I'm a canner, ust getting interested in dehydrating, and you've taught me a lot already!
Your videos are very well done. You have very good equipment and procedures and have obviously dehydrated a lot of food. I am confused by one thing. You advocate vacuum sealing sometimes in mylar AND using oxygen absorbers. This would seem to be unnecessary overkill and a waste of money. With no air, the oxygen absorber does nothing and if the seal breaks, the absorber will fail too. Oxygen absorbers are used when vacuum packing is not possible or practical.
Thanks, Tammy, for all this information! I have watched all the videos and some more than once or twice... I have received my Excalibur and tried it out last night with limes and oranges, apples and tomatoes... tried it at 120 degrees as you recommended... but I still had the problem with the citrus still being sticky in the middle after 15 hrs (the apples were also still pliable -- tomatoes too). I am putting them back in for a few more hours' try at 120 to see if this fruit can be salvaged...
before I bought my excalibur I dehydrated some stuff in the oven just to TEST it out and see if I liked it. the lowest temp on my oven is 115-120 so its kinda too high for my personal tastes because now after 2 hours at 135 I dehydrate the rest of the way at a mere 105 for real LIVING food. They oven really doesnt cut it if you want to do this regularly as an alternative to cook/killing your food. Usually I eat steamed foods (30%) with my rawfoods (70%) Good luck
Great videos! After watching this i decided to get an excalibur, and the best deal is on 'blemished' model 2900 (just like what she is using. I got mine for $159 with free shipping on ebay direct from Excalibur!
I have used my dehydrator last night for the first time, to dry beets. I have learned a lot on my own so far. The beets were various sizes and I should have cooked the larger beets longer and sliced them thinner and smaller than the rest. I have only watched this video of yours so far, so I don't know if you have addressed the silica packets that are promoted to maintain dryness. Are they absolutely necessary? If so, where is the best place to order them or buy them?
ok i am having trouble. I dehydrated some potato slices. I went to store them in vacuum sealed bag. They are good strong bags but they keep tearing holes in bag. Any suggestions? Did i over dehydrate them? I have jars but want them in bags as there are so much. Love your vids. Thank you

great video series. Easy, simple, directions. Everyone can benefit from watching these videos. What a great way for people to store food long term.
I have watched your videos several times. they are just packed with a wealth of information!
For someone who has never dehydrated before it was helpful seeing the before and after samples. Good video.

how do you know the water activity in the finished product is low enough that mold or bacteria won't grow?
